The Northeast blackout of 2003 was a widespread power outage that occurred throughout parts of the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and the Canadian province of Ontario on Thursday, August 14, 2003, just after 4:10 p.m. EDT.
Some power was restored by 11 p.m. Many others did not get their power back until two days later. In more remote areas it took nearly a week to restore power. At the time, it was the world's second most widespread blackout in history, after the 1999 Southern Brazil blackout. The outage, which was much more widespread than the Northeast Blackout of 1965, affected an estimated 10 million people in Ontario and 45 million people in eight U.S. states.
The blackout's primary cause was a software bug in the alarm system at a control room of the FirstEnergy Corporation, located in Ohio. A lack of alarm left operators unaware of the need to re-distribute power after overloaded transmission lines hit unpruned foliage, which triggered a race condition in the control software. What would have been a manageable local blackout cascaded into massive widespread distress on the electric grid.

in the great black out of 1965 Quebec was also hit ..in the great black out of 2003 only Ontario part of Canada was hit..Ohio was hit in 2003, but in 1965 Ohio was fine though. so this black out shifted over the years west ward. you guys got to get prepared for the next great 2 days or longer blackout coming to the north east US states and eastern Canada.. Texas was hit bad in early 2021. there was this blizzard and it hit Houston, TX .and then Texas was in a black out. also California gets blackouts here and there over the years. we got to get prepared for when the power goes out.

I was at home, listening to my police scanner. A 103rd Precinct Patrolman called in that the traffic lights had just gone out on Jamaica Ave. In the vicinity of the 165th St. Mall. ...Before I even had a chance to process it, the lights in my home blinked out. I knew instantly that it was a blackout. It was some amazing scanner activity that night (until my batteries died at about midnight).

In some recent power outages we’ve had I knew it was a blackout right away when I looked at the night sky and it was dark. No light pollution. We had super bad winds and the lights were flickering for hours before it finally went out for good

I'm in Philadelphia. Some guy at PECO didn't like what he saw and pulled us off the regional grid, so we missed it. In 1977 I was at summer camp during the blackout, but my Dad had to drive home from the GW bridge, at age 57, with cataracts in both eyes. Somehow he made it. My dog loved it.

That blackout taught me a lot of things. -Hope you have a gas power stove and matches. -A POT line aka plain old telephone line and regular telephone. Damn near every phone was cordless and use less glad we still kept the old ones. -keep candles around. -a battery operated radio -and thank goodness we lived in a house because we actually had running water. everyone living in high rises depend on a pump to get the water up to the high floors. so soon as that blackout hits, empty the pipes by filling up the bathtub.

My aunt and I went out joyriding during the blackout, we were on the highway, we got a flat tire, we got off the highway and had to wait hours for a tow truck to come change the tire.

Ahhhh I remember that. I was 9, getting picked up from Summer camp. The lights and everything went out in the projects, and we had to walk up the steps lol. It was crazy. Had to eat cereal and use candles for two days 😂

it was not terrorism, it was bad computer software, that was buggy / glitchy , there was a bug in the software system, a glitch in the software. and then the lights when out for a few days.

you had to BBQ in 2003 , cause you did not want your meat to go bad. Hotdogs , steak you name it lots and lots of BBQ.

I remember this I was at king plaza. Friends aunt came to pick us up. Everybody was on the block all night. Had to use the car head lights for light lol .music blasting, barbecuing. The next morning couldn't even enter the grocery stores had to stand in lines outside the stores to get what you need and they pass it through the window lol. Good times

So people who didn't live in the northeast part of the United states would know what was going on. There were not smart phones, only flip phones, so you would get your news from the TV or from a newspaper.

Also, some of these TV newscasts could be carried by FM or AM radio stations during emergencies like this, something that was very common in past decades in a regular basis. Yes, you don't get any picture but in the middle of a massive blackout (which probably affected your mobile phone network) tuning in the radio in your car to hear at least what and why happened is very welcome.

Those generators last 12-24 hours and you can’t get diesel if their is no power for a pump! I saw this while in Army stationed in Northern Virginia during the 2012 Derecho and fuel was hard to get when power was out for days!

Live in a house at ground level, always have flashlights around and keep you landline phone plus your cell phone. If one goes out you've got the other one for phone calls.

I remember this but was in Philly, where out power didn't go out. I can't imagine what it must've been like being in the heart of NYC like at Times Square & the electricity goes out totally. Do the cellular towers have generators these days (15 years later)?

I got a question. If this blackout started the way they described then how was it possible for these news stations to broadcast live if there was no electricity in the same locations ?

Backup generators I’m guessing, just like how the news would still broadcast when there’s a severe storm or hurricane.
