The southern tier is an under-appreciated and deeply interesting region of New York state. Home to cities like Binghamton and Jamestown and such tourist destinations as the corning museum of glass and the national comedy center, the southern tier is well worth exploring. In this video, we look at the geography and history of this region, as well as some of the more famous tourist attractions of the southern tier.
Skip ahead to your city:
Intro: 00:00
Seneca Nation: 00:53
Binghamton/Broome/Tioga: 2:14
Elmira/Corning/Chemung: 3:42
Olean/Salamanca/Allegany: 5:00
Chautauqua/Jamestown: 5:44
I apologize to Hornell for not being featured.
Special thanks to Michael Connolly for writing some of the script of this video, as well as Zach Libby, Patrick Egan, James Kearney, and Derek Baranski for accompanying me on a trip to the southern tier.

Skipped the Hornell area. Was super important in the rail industry way back, had the only turn table between Buffalo and Binghamton i do believe. Also now its the center for Amtrak high speed rail project.

Olean is located along the Allegany River. Bradford, Pa is a very short drive and it's the home of Zippo Lighters. St. Bonaventure University is so large, it has it's own zip code. St. Bonaventure was the university that famous Matt Gantt attended. He was drafted by Phoenix Suns, 4th round (12th pick, 59th overall), 1972 NBA Draft.

I just found your channel today but I'm loving your stuff. I'm from Binghamton, but I don't know too much about the western side of the southern tier so it was really cool to learn about that stuff. Side note, It's not really important but Binghamton is also the carousel capital of the world. We have 6 antique carousels. George F. Johnson of EJ shoes built these to be free to the public as he was too poor to afford them when he was a kid. They're all still operating free to the public with the exception of the Ross park carousel which requests you bring a piece of litter to ride (but I rarely see this enforced).

Thanks! I was worried some hardcore southern tierists would disagree with Chautauqua county being included so I'm glad you appreciated that. I did see the carousel capital of the world being mentioned a lot in my research, it just didn't make the final cut. Part of my reasoning is that Tonawanda NY claims something kind of similar so I wasn't sure how impressive the distinction actually was. I have to visit in the summer to see these carousels firsthand.

@@TheDCShow0 Yeah I completely understand that. I think we were given/claimed the title because we have the largest collection of still operational antique carousels (6 out of 150 in the U.S. and Canada). however, Tonawanda not only produced all 6 of ours but many more so I think that's pretty cool on its own right

I don't know if Chautauqua County is relatively flat. I thought it rolled. Think about it, you go from 570 feet at Lake Erie to 1300 at Chautauqua Lake, less than 10 miles away.

Historically speaking, Broome County was huge. Even Windsor, was the buggy whip capital. However, even today, Buggy Whip Factories is a phrase associated with obsolesce. But, there were MULTIPLE Buggy Whip Factories on main street in Windsor.

These types of videos inevitably miss subjects that could have been included. This one is great, but there was nothing about Allegany County, home to Cuba, NY which was once responsible for setting the price of cheese in the Eastern United States. The cheese factory in Cuba exists today. Cuba is also the birthplace of Charles Ingalls, "Pa" from Little House on the Prairie. Or Belfast, NY, the Bare-Knuckle Boxing Capital of the World. And Rushford, NY, birthplace of former New York State Governor, Frank Higgins in 1856 - the last New York State Governor to come from the Western side of NY until our current Governor, Kathy Hochul. And Rushford Lake, which flows into the Genesee River and over the falls in Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East. Angelica, NY is home to the Alton A. Sylor Bridge, the longest clear span timber arch bridge in America. The Village of Angelica was named for Angelica Schuyler Church, sister-in-law of founding father, the nation's first treasury secretary and man on the 10-dollar bill, Alexander Hamilton.

That does seem like a very cool topic but it may be too obscure for me to do, though maybe I could weave it into a larger narrative about northern Vermont. If you think otherwise I'm glad to hear why it's deserving of it's own video.

Thanks for the pointer. It’s always tricky pronouncing place names correctly, and as I make more videos I’m going to strive to be more accurate. I know I pronounced Owego wrong, it’s the type of thing where my brain just assumes there is only one way to pronounce a word, something I gotta work on.
