Park Slope one of the best neighborhoods in the world, $2500 is a bargain for that apt in that neighborhood, you are very lucky that you live in such a great place. Wherever you live you have to factor in the rent, transportation, and cost of goods (e.g. groceries, fuel, and utilities) to get a full picture. E.g. Living in NYC allows you to eliminate the Total Cost of Ownership of a car: Loan, insurance, fuel, parking. That alone has a huge impact vs. differences in rent prices. Also, living in a place which requires a car to do most daily tasks has an impact on your time -- you can't work while you're driving and sitting in traffic. You can work on most trains. If you accumulate the time spent sitting in a car, it can become a significant portion of your lifespan. Being able to live in a walkable lifestyle where you can get groceries within a 4-5 minute walk of your place allows you to buy fresh as you need supplies and not have to have a huger fridge or pantry because you only shop 2-3 times a month and have to fill the car. Once you get used to that -- it's so much more efficient.

'Living in NYC allows you to eliminate the Total Cost of Ownership of a car: Loan, insurance, fuel, parking.' The same applies to London. Urban London dwellers, especially the younger ones, are not car dependent. Public transport is great plus food and utilities, are generally cheaper. I was shocked by how expensive food was in New York City even with the favourable £/$ exchange rate.

Great collab having lived in both currently in UK the key differences are some of the local govt taxes / surcharges in London have increased significantly over the past decade in addition to transportation both public transport & driving a car in the city. This all adds up on top of groceries & utilities etc eye watering. I think the outer boroughs of NY have so much more to offer than the ones in London.

Wow Jon this a good comparison for what living in apartments in London and NYC are like. I find it interesting that apartments in London are small, but not as small as NYC apartments. I liked that the apartments in London have a dish washer and a washer for your clothes. I think it's great that you get a decent amount of space in 600 Sq. Feet apartment in NYC.

Well, my son will be moving into a one bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, and it's a more modern apartment with dishwasher and in-unit washer and dryer. Central air and heat, rooftop deck with a view of the Manhattan skyline, garage for parking, cold storage, gym, package room, etc. He's excited. The apartment is $2,550/mo. I reminded him to adopt a minimalist style of living. And now he's saying, "Mom, you can stay with me when you visit me." As to where I'd rather live, I'll stick to my small town. Nice, safe and quiet.

I cannot imagine living without a washing machine (dryers are much less common). london flats often can come furnished too, which is a big different from what I understand about US ones, which makes it easier to move around - but also its very uncommon to be allowed to paint or drill shelves or pictures into the walls without very clear landlord permission.
@jpninja776
@jpninja776 2 жыл бұрын
You usually need permission to make major changes in the US as well, but the general rule is you can paint as long as you paint it back to the original color when you move out, and you can drill holes as long as you fix them. It's kind of surprising to me that someone would get bent out of shape about a mounted shelf when you can make it look like it never happened with five minutes and a few cents worth of spackling paste and paint.

@@jpninja776 good to know! Yes it's ridiculous. By and large here they won't let you paint or fix back, but currently in my house our washing machine is broken and the roof is cracked letting rain into my room and it's been weeks doing nothing about that Vs anger at a picture hanging up... Clowns 🤡

I think that's so cool that they have washers in the kitchen in the U.K.! It's not something you ever see in North America and sometimes I think that would be pretty cool to have because I often forget about laundry if I'm in the rest of the house doing other chores. Sometimes I look at Europe and compare it to North America and think they have a better culture than us. Better way of doing laundry, more places to walk or bike, things like that.

It might come across bias because I am from the UK and a Londoner, but the apartments and building infrastructure in London is so much more up to date, modern and secure compared to apartments in NYC. That’s where the difference is to value for money! The size of the apartments is a lot bigger and less cramped compared to NYC, again value for money. Less complicated taxes in London compared to NYC. The pay might be more in NYC but I guess it’s all relevant to the general day2day expenses and lifestyle. London has more greenery and is a lot bigger as a city in terms of land size compared to NYC. On top of that the quality, modernised underground transport system also beats the old and poor conditioned NYC subway. I’ve been to NYC many times. I’d pick London long term over nyc anytime. Even a lot of Americans from nyc prefer London when it comes to comparisons and lifestyles. Don’t forget we have Europe on our doorstep so you if fancy going to Spain, Italy, France or Ibiza for the weekend, go for it! Some Americans won’t even know that London has a train link which goes from London to Paris through the sea. Again the infrastructure is next level and you are there in 2-3hours. Everyone has their own opinion but when you break it down, London will always come out on top on preferences. Don’t forget free healthcare as healthcare insurance is always on your pay package in the UK no matter what. It’s standard if you want to go private.

London is expensive, the further up north you go the cheaper it gets, £2500 where i live would get you a 4-5 bed detached house in a nice area. My wife has an apartment in Weehawken it's only a 1 bed studio type, but the mortgage is $2400 🤷‍♂️

Yes Weehawken is crazy expensive now. Most of the old homes that everyone wants are at least a mil+. There's currently one that was, is a mansion that's going for over 6 million. Don't get me wrong if you can afford it, it is great. That and transportation into the City is literally a walk down the block.

*Guys, it would have been nice to know* sq meters or sq feet, amenities in the area and how far is the nearest tube or subway station in London. That counts very much when deciding what price to pay here in London. Now East London is not the equivalent to Brooklyn in any respects. But cool to see you two collaborating.

This video shocked me. So much money for small apartments. I live in Johannesburg South Africa in a large 3 bedroomed house that would swallow both these and still leave room to spare. I pay less than half the rent and my income is just under 90K USD a year when converted from rands. I know location matters but I live in the highly rated northern suburbs and was considering a move to london but this has had me thinking twice. How much would I need to earn there for a similar lifestyle 🤔

Over here in the UK, the rent excludes utilities unless the landlord is hiding an illegal sublet - usually of a public housing property - so a tenant will be billed direct for electricity, gas, telephony/internet, water and council tax.

Hi, how are you? Lovely appartment you have in Brooklyn. I like the brick wall in the living room. Very Nice that you are married. Together you have more fun. 2500 euro’s is very expensive for a rental. You have to at least make 4000 dollars a month to be able to afford it. But I understand people are paying these prices because they come from outside the city. We have the same here in Amsterdam. Prices of rentals are exploding. Luckely I was Born and raised here. I would not be able to pay 2500
