I was the supervisor on the train on the PM trip when the train reached Euclid Av. It was a great ride. My team and I have been testing these cars for the past year, and there is a lot of thought and innovation put into this train. It has been very cool getting these trains ready for the general public.

I just rode in one this weekend. Here's my review: The MTA took away most of the seating in the cars; the not so subtle suggestion is that they want to pack more people in trains and that they are meant to stand up - -shoulder to shoulder. Each seat holds five average sized people on each side of the train; that's very little. They did widen the doors and made a little room for people who are standing right at the door which is a nice touch. I didn't get a chance to walk through the cars as someone had vomited all over the floor on one side of the car so everyone had scrambled onto the other side (and not wanting to walk over there). But I did see panhandlers and people wanting to escape from the vomit, wait for the doors to open at the station before exiting and reentering the train in the next car ; I guess no one knew that these trains are meant to be walked through. The digital display was nice but there were no maps at all in the car; the MTA assumes you have a map on your phone which they should not do . After all, you may be riding the A train at that moment but you are likely to want to transfer to another line so it's a good idea to have maps . Strangely there is a big pole which goes through the center of the seats so it severely limits the seating space. It would have been a better design without this pole. A better design choice would have been to put more poles in the center of the train for people to hang onto rather than have them lurk over the seated passengers . All in all, I give the new trains a C+ . It's nice to see something new but I wasn't impressed. The ride itself wasn't smoother or faster to my estimation and you could NOT understand what the conductor was saying through his speaker announcements; as usual in New York, the sound was muffled or distorted.

The R46 trains (1:31) are my favorites. There is ample seating and the rare window seat. Nowadays, on the newest trains, there’s only a row that can fit 6 moderately sized human beings. Not to mention the extremely blinding blue lights. Every new series of trains just removes seats. I wouldn’t be surprised if future trains do away with seating altogether and added leaning planks like they already do in some stations.
@djom-amari3559
@djom-amari3559 Жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. I like these best esp because the have sectional seating. Too often on these long bench such as the #4 train people can easily take up more space and feels like it is far less seating. Plus I honestly like the orange colors. Now if they could have made the R46 and updated like these new ones with better tech and door that would be perfect. Or an even more perfect idea would be to have R46 seat design with wider doors and new tech but each line would have the train line seating color, e.g. D/F etc line R46 keeps its orange, and the Green Lines would have Green and shades, the Blue line would have shades of Blue, Red line shades of Red et al.

There's also no handle on the other side of the seats, which is unsafe because if the train stops unexpectedly, someone might get slided off the seat. Those are my only complaints. Before I begin let me establish that I am a New Yorker that lives on the "A" line, therefore, I am qualified to comment with my 15 times a week trip minimum. Everyone is impressed because they are new and "modern" until new and modern begins to fall apart. My biggest issue with these trains is the lack of seating which is inevitably is going to cause crowding at the doors. This line also has one of the biggest issues with homeless people sleeping and doing God knows what else on the train because it takes hours to get from end-to-end for one single ride which takes up seats. Lastly, clearly they don't want people taller than six feet to ride the train as the ceilings are significantly lower than those on other models that are on the line.
@lancea673
@lancea673 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It is a joke making "new" cars with fewer seats. You are basically paying to stand. Some argue that fewer seats means less homeless sleeping, but homeless don't care and will sleep and do other "things" on those fewer seats. I wound's be surprised that same media that is marketing the new cars to report corruption and overinflated car prices a couple of years from now.
@mistermilkman
@mistermilkman Жыл бұрын
I was going 2 address the seating. It's ridiculous that people have 2 stand 4 so long bc the newer trains have less seats. Standing room leads 2 more theft as well. Pick pockets r gonna have a field day. 1 thing I didn't like about getting on the train from Far Rockaway n the early morning & late night r the homeless people taking over the cars, stretched out seat 2 seat, car 2 car.
