I agree and I've said it many times in this thread already. He hates the South but doesn't know anything about it. He looks at statistics nothing else I'm born and mostly lived in Nashville but I love Knoxville and East Tennessee. If it wasn't for family I would have moved closer to the mountains a long time ago. I went to Tennessee tech University. and spent a lot of time going to Knoxville & the mountains on the weekend. My best friend and her family moved just outside of Kingsport. It's just beautiful and peaceful. Itt would be a great place to raise a family

I agree. In fact, I didn't really like this video. The video maker's picks aren't particularly accurate or forthcoming. Some cities are a bit more violent than others -- but most are safe. There are some large cities that are very safe too. I live in Palo Alto, California. It's the heart of the Silicon Valley and the birthplace of major tech companies. Yet, it still feels like a small town. In California, cities like San Francisco to San Jose (the entire peninsula) are pretty safe -- even though crime has gone up because of changes in laws. Still, coastal cities like Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, Monterey/Carmel and Eureka are better. You can even buy affordable houses in places like McCloud, California (on the edge of Mt. Shasta) or South Lake Tahoe. Tennessee cities like Chattanooga, Knoxville and even Nashville are fantastic (although I prefer the suburbs outside the cities). I was raised in Virginia Beach. It was always a great city to grow up in and, more recently, I completed my college internships near it. I love cities in Texas like Corpus Christi, Waco, San Marcos and New Braunfels. They are safe, clean, inexpensive and offer plenty of activities.

@@ccchhhrrriiisss100 I feel like a lot of the "violent" cities are simply cities that have specific areas that are violent. doubly so for whole _states_ that are "violent" because of things that take place in certain cities which only take up a small proportion of the land area.

@philipmcniel4908 - Good point. Really, it is the "rate" of crime or violence that people should consider. NY City used to be extremely violent. However, after Rudy Giuliani was elected, he passed sweeping reforms. Suddenly, NYC had a lower crime rate than many much smaller towns. Still, even the most violent cities in America aren't really THAT violent. They just have a higher rate of violence. Crime rates are usually measured by a rate of violence using the number of reported crimes per 100,000 residents. However, what these stats don't say are that many single incidents have multiple counts of violence. For instance, if someone is breaking into a car, damages the vehicle's window and encounters the owner, pushes him down and flees, flees from police and resists arrest, that one encounter might include five or six separate incidents of violence. Those are figured into the overall rate as independent instances (despite being one overall event by one suspect). I read somewhere that the shoplifting in New York City was very high -- but that there were less than 1,800 individuals committed much more massive numbers of shoplifting incidents. In fact, a third of ALL shoplifting incidents in NYC -- accounting for most store thefts -- were committed by just 327 people (according to the NY Times in April 2023). According to the Times, those 327 individuals had been arrested more than 6,000 times. The same is true of violence. Most violence -- apart from "crimes of passion" involving domestic issues -- happen at the hands of relatively small number of arrested individuals. Even the nefarious gun crime statistics are skewed by the fact that they happen primarily by the same individuals in the same relative areas -- by suspects who aren't legal owners of firearms (e.g., felons, gangs, stolen weapons, etc.). Like you said, most US cities are safe when you account for crimes primarily taking place in the same, less-safe areas and mostly by the same individuals in those areas.

The ranking here was based on the ratio of inbound moves to outbound moves. Vermont would never make the list if it were based on total numbers, since the entire state has the population of a medium-sized city. But it topped this list because hardly anybody moved *out* of the state, so the in-to-out ratio was high.

Yes, the title was extraordinarily misleading, it should’ve been titled “ratio of inbound to outbound moves” (which no one actually cares about). What people would assume from the title is that it’s a ranking of actual (net) numbers of where everyone is moving to. Let’s say 400,000 people in the US changed states. I want to know which states they moved to, ranked 1-10. This video is NOT that, which is of course no fault of the NZ family.

I think a lot of the moves in the USA, right now, are based more on financial, political, and work related reasons than any other choices. Which, if you think about it as a parent, you really are making the best choices you can for your family as a whole. My dad was a military lifer. We moved once every year or two. Every state or country has their own language or slang you had to learn to blend in. It's tough on the whole family unit. Imagine what these families are going through. So, if you see a new family in the neighborhood, say hi.😊😊. I'm sure it will make their day better.

We might get an ice storm in October. Sometimes we can wear shorts at Christmas. Over all Texas has been a great place to raise our three children and now we have grandchildren living here to. One things these lists often show, even when trying to be inclusive, is an ingrained bias against certain places and states. Like you guys have shared and commented before, we have so many states that are larger and more populated than entire countries. At the same time, people can't help to have a core feeling about states as a whole, same as they do for countries. Every state has better and worse places to live, and the differences can be stark between them. For an example: he mentioned people moving from other southern states to Alabama because of the average incomes in these states, but that's not where people are moving from when they come to Huntsville. Yes, the rest of Alabama's state averages pull it down, but Huntsville is consistently ranked as one of the top ten cities in the U.S. to live in, and it's even higher if you work in a STEM field. The whole city is based around aerospace, defense, biotech, etc. The people moving to Huntsville are mostly engineers, programmers, scientists, government employees and such...from all around the U.S. and the rest of the world. Same as a lot of states though, like how so many people picture all of NY to be NYC or all of California to be LA, it gets judged poorly based on stereotypes and averages rather than how each area actually is. Sorry for the rant, it just kind of frustrates me when I see entire countries, states, or regions reduced to stats as if that reflects every place in the region. (I could go off on more of these state lists, and more of the states on this list, but doubt anyone will read this far anyway) : )

Well most of NY when it comes to voting votes like NYC. Most of California votes like LA. So yeah. There is a reason why they didn't make the list. Look at the politics of the major cities in those states and compare it to the crime. Also, more specifically for California, why would ANYONE want to move there under the constant threat of seceding from the union of the USA? Most people that make a big move across states think rationally about it and decide if it is worth the risk, as well if it is good for their family.

Idaho has the deepest river gorge, Hells Canyon, At its lowest, the Snake River sinks an astonishing 7,993 feet beneath the canyon rim, nearly 2,000 feet deeper than the “Grand” Canyon. Shoshone Falls is a must see attraction in Twin Falls, Idaho. At 212 feet tall (65 m) and 900 foot wide (274m), Shoshone Falls is one of the largest natural waterfalls in the US surpassing the height of the famous Niagara Falls. Shoshone Falls is some 45 feet (14 m) taller than Niagara. Being tucked into the Rocky Mountains, Idaho has thousands of Rivers and Lakes with many hiking trails throughout. My wife is a Real Estate agent in Washington State, and has helped a lot of clients sell their house to move out of state in the past year. Also she knows agents and has family in the Boise, Idaho area and that market has dried up, They built a LOT of developments but no one is moving there right now. The interest rates have raised so much nationwide that people in general with a good loan don't want to give it up to buy a new house and pay a much higher rate (we have a 3% rate but if we bought the same house now would be about 6.5%) We know agents in Boise that have had to hang up their license and move into another line of work. The problem with Boise even though its a nice city, is outside of its small metropolitan cities is that other than that there is nothing, like nothing nothing if you drive a half hour in any direction. I think the closest major city is Salt Lake City, Utah which is a 339-miles (545-km) drive away. With that being said if anyone needs to buy a Home in Washington State let me know.

Many western states are not liking Californians who are moving in. They Jack up real estate prices wherever they go. Plus they tend to want to bring the same policies with them that ruined their own state. That is a generalization I know. I know lots of great people from California. Utah is the second driest state in the nation with Nevada being the first. We really are getting to the point where we can’t provide for a much larger population. Water is a big issue. Certainly any inter-state move takes a lot of commitment and resources, as you found when you did it. There’s so much research that should be done before choosing a new home. Let’s talk Vermont. Yes, it offers beautiful views and woodlands. Outside of the larger cities, like Burlington, there isn’t much there. The small towns lack infrastructure. The winters are brutal. They don’t have sales tax, but trucking in supplies adds to the final cost. We researched the state, along with many others a couple years ago for retirement. It was almost immediately scratched from the list. Our final picks: Arizona, Nevada and Texas. All based on wanted amenities, cost of living, weather and leisure activities. We are in Southern California. The state that is bankrupting itself through taxes, AQMD and chasing out all businesses. My two cents …

5:45, outside of Memphis and midnight, Tennessee is actually a very safe state. When riots were breaking out across the US, people started vandalizing things where I live in Tennessee and the local police came out to address the problem before it turned into riots. The police told everyone that if the protests didn’t remain peaceful, then they would enforce a number of laws that they don’t typically enforce, pedestrian traffic laws for example, to at least take the bad apples to jail for the night. The protests remained peaceful and our local police were able to serve both the general public and the protesters by controlling traffic during protests, etc. Also, while Nashville may suck up all the oxygen in Middle Tennessee to fuel their growth, East Tennessee continues to grow all three of our major metropolitan areas of Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Tri-Cities (Bristol, Johnson City, and Kingsport). 14:45, returning home from visiting an archaeological site in Tennessee, Google Maps kept trying to take us into the a small city on the main route, but I kept going down back country roads. Getting off the interstates and highways is how you really see an area, whether that’s middle of nowhere Tennessee or Nashville.

That’s kinda funny about Oregon with 12 counties (so far) wanting to leave the state and join Idaho! So happy to hear Tennessee is #7 (no state income tax - I’ve lived in Nashville, Memphis and now in the Scenic City) and Alabama is #6 (they don’t tell you about the gorgeous beaches of Alabama and my happy place and where I went to grad school), and Florida at #5 (because it’s a red state and maybe in my future) and South Carolina at #3 (Greenville is fantastic!). Take note of what states are red and blue when planning a move. IMHO, I am Southern born and bred on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Small town life in the South is the place to live!

It's all the redneck cow grazing counties with like 2% of the states population that has this crazy idea that will never happen in a million years.

We are seeing a lot of people coming here to Alabama. Cost of living is damn low, even in Huntsville (one of our biggest and nicest cities).

"Take note of which states are red and blue...", EXACTLY what I did when I drove 2500 miles to move from Oregon to Kentucky! Absolutely no looking back after purchasing (with ca$h) a gorgeous piece of property and house for 1/10 of what it would've cost in that crazy state! Oregon is beautiful, but only in scenery. I made sure to not tell the narcissistic and borderline P.D. family anything about my freedom-move also! 3 years on, they still have no idea where or how I vanished! 'Murican Freedom, BABY!, at least until the commies finish their takeover of our great country.

The parts of Oregon wanting to join Idaho are heavily conservative with small populations. Idaho being a 'red' state is a draw for them. Never going to happen.

All of the Rhode Island footage, lol, was either the capitol (city shots, Providence, about 30-40 min from Boston), or Newport (the beaches, the bridge--tallest suspension bridge on the east coast--the mansions, the "quaint town")

The reason people from Massachusetts are moving to rhode island is because Boston is relatively close. Fall River Massachusetts and Providence have become bedroom communities to people who have high paying jobs in Boston but can't afford rent or housing in the city, so they escape here. They will soon put in a fast Rail between Fall River and Boston, so that will make it even easier for people to commute

I live in a place in the states called 606, a part of southeastern Kentucky where we have, flash flooding, 100+ degree summers, lots of people who don’t have everything they could possibly want, and mostly work for everything they want

As a native Oregonian, I would never consider any other place to live. The scenery is so beautiful and so diverse. No other state like it...and no sales tax :) I always love your videos & am looking forward to your visit to the states!

If those counties ever manage to leave the state and join Idaho, I'll consider moving up that way. Unfortunately the whole state is basically run by the commie dumbasses on the coast.

Being from America, people and business are leaving California, Washington state, Oregon, New York to name a few. They may have great senic sites to visit but not to live or have a business. They are moving to states that you saw...but also Texas and Georgia..along with Kentucky, North Carolina and Nevada. A lot of Hollywood peeps are leaving California because of high taxes and crime to Nevada and Texas. New Yorkers and other northern states are moving to southern states.

We moved from Cincinnati Ohio, to Georgetown Ky. My husband took a job at the Toyota Plant here and I will tell you, Kentucky is gorgeous, all the horse farms, not to far from things to do in surrounding starts. Been here 10 yrs now, and I think we’ll stay.

The cold in Minnesota is difficult, but the other three seasons are awesome. Beautiful lake and forest filled state. Great fishing all over the state and Lake Superior is a beautiful spot. Minneapolis and St. Paul are very nice cities.

I have heard good things about St. Cloud as well. Also good things about Wabasha as smaller towns go if one wants to live next to the Mississippi River. Not sure how true either of them are. I have also been curious about Thief River Falls. I used to have family that lived up there, though I think they live closer to Minneapolis now.

Most people underestimate just how cold winter can be. During cold snaps the thermometer might not get up to zero for several days on end. Then add in the wind and it's beyond brutal. Very nice place to be from about May through October though. Winter just drags on soooooooooooooooooo long.

@@WolfsDEthey used to be, but I have a friend who is about half an hour outside of the Twin Cities, and she only goes in for work. Almost never goes in to the city to do anything social now that her husband is gone. I think they have gone downhill. Even when I went to visit her a few years ago and we took a road trip down to Madison Wisconsin where we had met at school, Madison was not the same. On May 1st this year, she sent me pictures because she got about a foot of snow. I grew up in Michigan and lived in Wisconsin for 10 years, and I'm not certain I can take 23 Below in the daytime at this point in my life. I am on the East Coast, but last year I only had to shovel snow once

Love watching your videos! As someone who has lived in West Virginia my entire life, I was so happy to see it on this list. It is true, there are a lot of issues are state still needs to work through, but WV is really a diamond in the rough. The people, outdoor adventures, food, low cost of living, and so much more make this state on to watch. We are taking so many steps in the right direction. Hope to see you all visit our "mountain momma" state sometime soon!

I’m in the Boise, ID area and it is such a great place to live. Minutes away from mountains and minutes away to the amazing lakes and rivers. So much to see and do here. Idaho has everything. Northern Idaho has the best forested lakes around Sandpoint and Coeur d’ Alene. Central idaho has the sawtooth mountains Southern Idaho has canyons, rivers and amazing cities (Boise, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls). I’m afraid secret is out on this amazing state. Lots of people moving here.
