GamingWithFun15 me neither. Traditional wool uniforms that are meant for more rigorous classic marching style over visual would definitely now work. Blue devils even uses a spandex kind of material with their unis. I think it would be cool to have a modern traditional uni. Made from the same breatheable fabric with more of a traditional look. Blue devils seem to be one of the only corps they do that

Shayne O'Brien, (the soloist), did it during Prelims, which was nationally shown in Movie theaters and sent the marching world internet in a frenzy, but did not do it during Semis. So everyone was hoping that it would come back in Finals, and the reaction is from that buildup.

Something that not a lot of people know is that the camera man was holding up a sign that said "wink" on it finals night. That's why Shane laughs about it after in this finals recording.
@jared0111
@jared0111 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndThereWasHobbyman yeah, exactly. the unexpected prelims wink got a good reaction and some definite buzz in the theater/post-theater online responses, and then when he DIDN'T do it on semis, you could kinda hear the crowd 'awww' in a way, with shayne seemingly noticing it. so going into finals, he knew that a fair amount of people in the crowd and around the country were expecting it, so when he did it, after that brief delay after his high note....the crowd having their anticipation finally resolved (especially during such an emotionally potent moment in the corps/show history/great gig in the sky itself) became a celebrated, cathartic, iconic, transcendent moment. as an alum (05-07 mello), it's extra special because it's beautifully in line with who we are, what we're about, and our crowd-friendly, relatively whimsical approach to the activity. (a very small part of me wishes the anticipation for the wink didn't distract from the music moment at 9:49, but the wink is way too iconic to regret. i'm glad shayne waited how he did, so that the crowd's roar didn't cover up that glorious descrecendo.) i had no idea about the camera man though!!
@remkeymssb143
@remkeymssb143 4 жыл бұрын
As a current member, the design staff told us the story of it. One of the heads of show design actually got a little upset at the shayne and told him not to do it. At semis they heard the crowd’s disappointment when he didn’t wink, and then told him to do it on finals night and it turned into the DCI iconic moment it’s known as today

I saw this live in Atlanta, and four hours later when I got home my ears were still ringing it was so loud. It didn't hurt that Carolina Crown had gone on before them (Their 2016 Relentless would be a good show for you to watch as well). My ears were already ringing from their show. By now you're familiar with their horn line. I rarely expect another corps to be louder, but that night the Bluecoats were. It was a truly unforgettable performance. As for "the wink..." The DCI world championships have three rounds of competition. Two nights before this performance, the first round of the championships was broadcast live to theaters all over the country. He winked at the camera then, so when this night came, everyone in the stands was watching for it. He didn't do it right away like at the theaters so it became almost a "wait for it," moment.

I was one of the lucky ones who got to see these amazing performers put on this show every night for over 6 weeks! I was in the crowd during this video and was crying by the end of the show! I knew it was their year to win it all! To this day, I get full-body goosebumps throughout the entire show. Tonight would have been the first night of the World Championships, but unfortunately the 2020 season was cancelled. Hopefully we'll get back to business next summer.

Without a doubt, one of the strongest DCI wins/shows of all time! It didn’t let up...kept moving and building and it was mind blowing. I saw it live 3 times that summer and finals was completely off the chain! That build up to the “Wink” was a deafening roar from the audience. Those 4 lead trumpet soloists were such quality musicians. Loved this show. And their 2014 TILT show is truly what made me a Bloo fan for life. Incredible!

i don't disagree, and i'm glad you love it, but for me, that section mostly just builds the anticipation up for that flamenco gloriousness at 6:54. (her reaction to noticing the new melody/style that dropped during that section was perfect.) during the 2016 season when i was frequently watching videos as the year went on, the two parts i would always check out first, to hear how they sounded on a given night, were the hit in great gig in the sky, and that fat tasty dissonant chord at 7:02.
@BRUXXUS
@BRUXXUS 4 жыл бұрын
@@jared0111 I think a big reason I love that part so much is just because the music allows the groove to set in and develop for a while. So much of marching music is written in a way to be kind of schizophrenic, wild changing in style and content every few seconds. It's a symptom of how judging in the activity works, I think. Anything that lasts more than a few seconds and the judges start commenting on "oh, well you've been doing this for too long". It's one of my only dislikes about the activity, and one I'm slowly working to kind of change. There's nothing wrong with a little minimalism, letting a melody, groove, or feeling settle and anchor for a bit. Just my opinion.

Only DCI finals I’ve ever been to, what an amazing performance to see live. The crowd was deafening after their show.

It was insane how that first group that entered all moved like dancers but they were not the color guard. I was shocked as much as you Courtney!

At the June theater broadcast, by the time the opening hit at 4:35 finished, I turned to the guy next to me and said, "That's it, that's the 2016 champs right there!" Crown hadn't even played yet. This show was so different and executed so well already, I was convinced that nobody was going to touch it. Reminded me of what Wayne Downey once said about getting to see Garfield '83 from the press box for the first time, "We can't beat this, this is new, this is different, this is exciting."

here is kind of long fun fact for you. The song they played at 8:35 was "Great Gig In The Sky" from the great Pink Floyd album "Dark Side of the Moon'. That song featured the vocal talent of Clare Torry who was only sixteen years old at the time. That (at the time)young woman has an amazing voice. Give it a listen if you can. She was amazing at sixteen.

@Courtney Coulston I was hoping you would notice that @7:10 there is a point where you hear music from the brassline, but none of them have the instrument on their face at that time. Chew on that for a bit. lol

I've seen a LOT of great shows in my life, but seeing this in person was on a whole different level. Best writing to date in DCI, the staff did amazing with this and as hard as it was the kids really pulled it off. NOT easy to sync all these moving pieces.

One thing I think you should try and pay attention to in your next DCI video is the sight difference in marching technique between the horn lines and the drum lines. Specifically with when they are marching to the side. The horn line will do something called a slide where they turn their hips and basically march forward. Alternatively The drum line will do something called Crabbing which is more of the drum line marchers keeping their hips pointing forward (for their drums) and instead of marching forward they just cross their legs to move to the aide

When a "down under" girl says "y'all - you KNOW it is a good show! Seeing it live - in person was so very moving! The Blue Coats so richly deserved to win it all that year!!! They followed it up the next season very narrowly losing to the Blue Devils. GREAT SHOW!!!!!

There’s still a part of me that’s hanging on to the “old way” with Drum Corps. One change I do like is how more and more corps are going without shakos. It really lets the corps members’ personalities shine. I’m slowly embracing the changes. It’s still something I love to follow, and hope it makes a triumphant return next year.
