If progressive discipline was followed, the union will not have a leg to stand on. However if the safety service director was simply alluding to events in the letter that did not result in discipline, the officer has a shot at getting his job back

How dare he try to try and help capture and arrest a criminal in yet another stolen vehicle? The audacity (Gasp!)
@iamamish2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you're serious or not. When your bosses tell you to stop chasing a criminal (for any reason), you have to listen. He did not. He did not respect chain of command, and was fired for insubordination. In fact, his defense is not that it was OK, because he was chasing a criminal (a defense he knew was doomed to fail for the reasons I outlined), but instead tried the defense that he was not actually in pursuit of the trailer!

Officers are told not to continue in pursuit when a car is stolen or someone is carjacked Many officers get angry when told to not continue in the pursuit especially when the car that was stolen is used for numerous crimes in the city and elsewhere
@iamamish2 жыл бұрын
It's a trade-off - obviously stopping a pursuit increases the chances that the person will commit other crimes, and it is less of a deterrent to future crimes for other criminals. But, that has to be balanced against the risk of high-speed chases to civilians. For what it's worth I did a quick search on pursuit policies for various police organizations and not one of them had such a simplistic policy like, "don't chase them if the car is stolen or carjacked". I'd link to one of them, but the comment would get flagged as spam.

Want better officers? Increase Law enforcement funds for training and academies...
@iamamish2 жыл бұрын
Seriously? He was passing people at over 100 mph in the berm because he didn't get enough training? When he was told to stop chasing somebody and did not listen, it was because he did not spend enough time at the academy? Police may or may not get enough training - I don't know. But whatever the case, it is hardly relevant here.

Sounds to me like a City pencil-neck out to get the officer for bad blood in their past. The cop may have wrote the "Safety Inspector's" and I use that term very lightly, wife or friend a ticket and he was out for revenge. Didn't look to me like he did anything that any other cop would not have done. What he was hired and paid to do, which was stop the criminal. Curious about the "real" reason for the termination or their past???

I don't think this officer should've been fired. I do think that the person who fired him should be fired, and he should get their job, because this officer was doing his best to stop a threat, I. E. Pursuing a stolen semi. I understand he could've wrecked out, and injured, or killed someone, but people need to understand that when a regular car wrecks out, it has the power to normally take out one, maybe two cars, and be stopped. Whereas, a semi has the capability of taking out a bunch of cars at one time, and just keep on trucking.

@Taipan 1 2 3 I'm the son of a navy man, I was born on Whidbey island Washington, so I know all about doing what's right, even if it means defying orders given by a commanding officer. Men and women have earned prestigious commendations by doing actions like this.
@joshuabrooks49074 жыл бұрын
@Taipan 1 2 3 that captain was in charge of a ship where a bunch of sailors were getting sick from the coronavirus. A military man's code of honor is to protect the people that live in the country he lives in, and that includes the men and women they're supervising. Yes, he went against the chain of command, but he did it in order to save lives. If anyone should've been fired, it should've been his commanding officers.
