On November 27, 2018 at 2151 hours NFD units were dispatched to a working commercial fire (multiple callers) in the area of 2097 Mt. Vernon Road. This was a 35 x 35 garage that appeared to have fire in one sector of the garage. NFD responded with 2 Engines, 2 Ladders, 2 Medics, a Battalion Chief, and the Fire Chief, in addition to four automatic-aid engines. NFD total strength for this fire was 21 firefighters.
Ladder-2 was the first arriving unit, and they initiated an attack with a 2.5 inch line. A second 2.5 inch line was placed into operation after additional units arrived. A defensive fire was ordered due to the age of the building, building construction, and because it was unknown what was being stored in the building. The fire was quickly contained and the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Chief Decker: I want to thank you for all of the videos you have uploaded, showing a professional, organized and calm fire scene getting the job done fast and with minimal risk. (Edit: I am originally from Ohio, Canton and Louisville to be exact.) I have been tasked with reviving our comatose VFD out here in a very tiny town in Idaho. I have been in discussions with the nearest muni full time dept., and they have advised that our role is best as a first response, defensive only operation (no interior operations, but I will take the training to be able to effect rescue of occupants if possible). We have many obstacles to overcome, including neglected apparatus and the biggest....no operational hydrants. The previous city leadership failed to push the "engineer" of our $900k "upgrade" to our water system to make sure the distribution system can support at least ONE hydrant. (I am currently the water system operator and fighting to correct that issue as well.) The systems maximum flow rate (despite having 8" mainline and 6" laterals) is only 92gpm. (We have two 70gpm 10hp boosters, but because of the way they piped the suction, if both try to run at the same time they overload and it is a race to see which motor trips first.) If possible, I would like to chat with you at your leisure in the near future to discuss some of the issues we have with the apparatus and equipment. Meantime, I'll keep watching your channel and learning as much as possible. Cheers.

But it's always awesome to watch your department videos (the most professionally operating department) there are several departments that should be ashamed to post the videos they post running around knocking out windows, departments with top of the line apparatus and equipment but no training! Thank you Chief Decker for doing what you'll do best! God bless you and your family and entire department Merry Christmas sir! Oh Chief we're still waiting on A&E to do a series of Live FD I'm sure you will make the Sean `Sticks" Larkin of Live FD ? Hello Chief. Thank you for some great videos. I hope you can help me understand a few things which are done differently in the US to just about anywhere else. What is the rationale for sending multiple large vehicles with 3-4 man crews to a fire rather than smaller vehicles with larger crews as is done in Europe, for example, where a typical unit has 5-6 crew? If my numbers are correct 10 appliances were dispatched to this fire, but my guess is that only 2-3 were actually used, the rest provided personnel, which makes them really expensive taxi's. Also why aren't high pressure hose reels common in the America's? Thanks.

Didn't take long for it to light up once the guys started pulling the siding off. And thank you for pulling only 2 1/2 and going defensive immediately - there are those who might have laddered it, started cutting the roof and made an entry like they were going to save something. In your 360 did you talk with the owner or anyone about the contents and made your defensive decision based on that, or just solely on the structure and observed conditions (which were pretty ugly to start with)? And your weather sucks as bad as ours in Upstate NY.
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
The owner was not on scene until much later. I spoke to a civilian briefly but he didn't have any information. I decided to go defensive based on the age of the building and because we had no idea what was inside. No reason to get somebody killed while extinguishing material possessions. As it turned out, the owner was using this as a storage unit. It was packed with a variety of ordinary combustible items (cabinets, small tractor, clothes, desks). And don't get me started on Ohio weather. There was a steady 15-20 mph wind on this night causing the smoke to blow sideways, and creating a wind chill of 11 degrees. We skipped right over fall this year and went straight from summer to winter. Take care, and stay safe.

Generally I'm not a fan of a combination nozzle on a 2 1/2 line, UNLESS you can put it right in the building as in this case. I prefer the straight bore as the standard nozzle for this line because usually you can't get this close. I still like having the option of a combo nozzle though. Good call on the big lines and going defensive. You just never know what's in buildings like these that don't get inspected.

Fires happen anytime anywhere at any given moment. As an electrician ive seen multiple violations that could have made fires later down the road, things such as wires left open too close to touching a box, to a fixture exceeding its voltage range and heat being dispersed near flammable materials. Random shorts in a light burst the ballast and made molten shmoo fly everywhere. Shit just happens

@@brianluber865 I don't think they are intentionally trying to cause property damage. They are trying to move a hose line and avoid standing under the power line that was arcing throughout the fire. It is difficult to get the full picture when you are only seeing video from one angle.
@jkollar109
@jkollar109 5 жыл бұрын
Taking the line over the car allows for an easier, safer and more efficient advance. Taking it around either end of the car would have increased the possibility of the line getting snagged under the tires (due to the location and position of the car) and hindering the advance. That would be my guess anyway. Highly doubt it was done to cause damage. Lol

Chief mentioned in another comment that due to ongoing investigation, he can't speculate. However, as a 40 year electrician, I can and will. It seemed on arrival that the most active (visible) fire was in that front corner, right where the electric service riser is. So I would say it is highly probable it was started by an electrical fault.
