On March 6, 2019 at 2315 hours, NFD units were dispatched to a report of a house fire at 584 Prior Avenue in Newark, Ohio. While responding, dispatch advised they had received two calls reporting a fire at this location. This was a 20x45 2-story house situated on a very narrow street. NFD responded with 2 engines, 1 ladder, 3 medics, and a battalion chief, in addition to two automatic-aid engines. NFD total strength for this fire was 17 firefighters. Battalion-1 was the first arriving unit, and reported fire in the back (Charlie side) of the house on division 1. The fire was contained with two hose lines, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported, however two dogs perished in the fire.
This video was recorded with a Motorola Moto Z Force Droid in an iBolt suction cup windshield mount.
SPECIAL NOTE- Due to how narrow this street is the video is blocked by Rescue-1 who was assigned to establish water supply. You can skip forward to 16:50 to pick back up on the action. Sometimes this is unavoidable and the nature of our business.
I have additional videos on my other KZfaq channel at / traumawave
You can keep up to date with Newark Fire Department on their Facebook page at / newarkohfire or on their web page at www.newarkohiofire.org
I have opted to allow commenting so that people can ask questions or make comments/observations. Please keep it respectful. Most of us are here trying to learn. If you are disrespectful I will block you.
USE OF MY VIDEOS- My videos haves been uploaded for training purposes. Anyone may use this video in-part or whole for training purposes. If you have specific questions about the video, you can contact me at daviddeckersemail@gmail.com.
Stay safe!

I was really suffering from severe Newark Fire withdrawls, but alas, Dr. Decker was called back into service. I liked the confidence of the chief when asked if the car should be moved. " Nope" No need, we'll have if knocked down quickly; and it was. Thanks for the video.

@@adelefarough5123 yes sir I can only imagine, as a firefighter of 15 years, I was privileged to be a volunteer in a paid atmosphere meaning we had the chiefs, officers training and equipment to be the most efficient and professional we could be and settled for nothing less, not only do I have so much respect for Chief David Decker and Newark Ohio FD but it shows ALL the qualities listed above! Don't get me wrong I understand some departments are doing the best job they can and today especially with volunteer departments there are LESS men and women volunteering in their communities which strains the safety of their families and property! What really gets me in a bad mood is watching a paid department with frontline great equipment and no training and poor leadership (and it clearly shows)!!! When There's No organization and Unnecessary damage to the structure and property! For example a thermal camera can see fire in and behind the walls and ceiling in stead of tearing outfall the sheetrock and as in this video Chief Decker's crew simply opens a window! NOT BUSTING IT OUT AND TOSSING THE A/C OUT ON THE GROUND! I stood up and applauded! Professionalism! Training! Great Leadership! A group of people who have pride in themselves and the job done! It's like comparing the previous 8 years of President Obama vs the past 2 years of President Trump! Huge difference huh ? Again to Chief David Decker as crew I salute you sir 👏👏👏

At first I thought rescue 1 was first due and asking myself why are they pulling another section of supply off instead of opening up a side compartment and pulling a 25ft supply and connecting to what was already on the ground and to the side of the rescue but then I rewatched it and realized they were pulling it all off so they could pull it up to engine 2 which was first due. I rewatched all your vids before commenting so I don’t get muted from commenting on this channel. I’m in a fire department explorer post for teens ages 14-18 years of age that want to join a fire department so I have some knowledge of operations but not full knowledge of operations. Hi Dave, as I've mentioned before I always hit the like button before I even watch the whole video because I admire how you try and do things. (I only said try because sometimes boop happens) I've always been on volunteer fire dept's for the past 40 plus years until I got COPD. At least 95% of the time I'd show up on scene and was given no directions on what to do even when I'd ask the chef. So I'd start grabbing tools off the truck and have them ready because I knew they had gone in the building without them and would be asking for them. I'd also walk around and unkink hoses and grab tanks off the truck and be ready to help anyone changing there tanks as they came out of the building as needed. I'd also be setting up lights if needed, starting up chain saws and the fans to make sure they started. Way to often I'd show up the house is totally involved, three engines on scene, one tanker and only one 1-1/2 being used with at least 5 people standing around waiting to be told what to do and no one connected the tanker to the engine being used.

Not sure how cold it was, I see snow on the ground. Did you have to call extra manpower for fatigue due to the cold? If possible, what are the different sounds that go off in your vehicle? God bless you and your whole fire personal for the job that you do. Even through all the excitement you keep your cool, no pun intended, and direct everyone in a professional way.
@commandvisionfire
@commandvisionfire 5 жыл бұрын
We did not have to call in extra manpower. The temperature was 22 degrees with a windchill of about 10 degrees. We had the fire knocked down quickly enough that we didn't need to call in any extra manpower. The sounds that you are hearing is the MDT (computer). We use a program called Tiburon for emergency responses. So you hear a Microsoft Windows sounds each time a unit hits their on scene button and each time the dispatcher adds notes to the call such as when I requested the power company or confirmed that we had PAR on the fireground. Thanks.

Nice work guys! Love seeing ground ladders thrown for potential egress. Every ground ladder=another egress👍 Unfortunately, its become an afterthought and a forgotten art these days with most depts. Heck of a lot easier and faster to hand shag a ladder to another window/side than to maneuver these monster towers that everyone seems to want as their primary truck companies. Hello, everyone this is the owner of the home you see in this video. I want to thank everyone for getting there very quickly and doing the best that they could. Yes, I lost two dogs, they were my babies and very loved. Some of my kitties are no longer here with us as well. But, I have another problem. Someone is going into my home right now and stealing our things. Yes they have been damaged by soot, smoke, fire or water but that doesn't seem to stop them. We don't know who they are but if there is anyone that is close to Prior and see's someone, other than the people that we have okay'd to be in there, that is carrying out items and shouldn't. Please call the police! There was someone there last night or the night before and ran off with a white xbox and a computer tower. If anyone knows anything, post it here or call the police. Because you have to be lower that low to steal off of someone after they just lost everything.

I am so sorry for your loss. Nevertheless, I find myself asking what is *wrong* with society these days? What kind of jerk would go into someone's fire-damaged house and steal what's left of the owners' belongings? Frankly, when my parents and I had a fire, my father was very concerned about looting. He was concerned enough that he chose to stay in the house regardless of the soot and the residual fumes. My mom and I went and stayed at my grandmother's. Unfortunately, my mom was pregnant the night of the fire, and she miscarried the next day. It was not a good week for her. Then again, it's never a good day for a fire.

Some cities use physical tags, in some videos, particularly NYFD, you can see the tags hanging from the back of their helmets. Other cities like Houston, can do the par check electronically, which gives the chief an electronic recording of each persons status. I like good questions. Thanks for asking!

Forty-five years ago, I briefly flirted with the idea of joining a volunteer department. The reason(s) I didn't are lost to me now, but were probably immature at best. I also briefly entertained the notion of joining the City Department about thirty-five years ago, but they weren't hiring at the time. Life distracted me after that. Some friends joined a suburban department, and encouraged me to reconsider, but I had suffered a minor spinal disc injury by then, and also felt myself a bit old to start at what I recognize as a mentally- and physically-demanding job. What I see in your videos is a solid focus on crew safety, top to bottom and side to side, through observance of protocols that I suspect came through hard-learned lessons of crews before. It's interesting to me to see how the protocols work. It's interesting to hear how word choice is influenced by radio equipment and mission clarity (as with many professions, specific words for ordinary objects become important). Thank you for these videos.

Mac Lager: Oh, dear! There lies the difference between those who fight fires and those who suffer fires. Happily, those of you who fight fires can afford to regard a fire such as this as "bread and butter." This means that you can stay calm. I think the last thing anyone needs is a firefighter having a panic attack on duty, although I am well aware that there are a lot of frontline workers these days who are suffering from PTSD. Nevertheless, for the families who are displaced by fire, I'm afraid it is not a "bread-and-butter" scenario. It changes people. There are two kinds of people in the world: people who have been through a fire, and people who have not. I notice that people who have been through a fire are way more careful about it.

Yes. I'm trying to find a good camera for that exact purpose. I had a helmet camera, but the problem with that is it would probably make about half of the people nauseous because I'm constantly looking around. But you are right, some type of camera on my body would be beneficial.

I used to live in a home similar to that in Barberton Ohio possibly had the same floor plan when it originally built in the 1920's, it had been added on to over the years and the 2nd floor converted into an apartment, fire was my biggest fear, it had questionable electrical some of which I corrected.

Maybe because he was sleeping, and only got woken up by the sounds of the approaching sirens. A large number of people perish in fires because you can’t smell smoke when sleeping, and only the loud noise of the alarm will wake them - Fit and Check your smoke alarms people. As an aside, the older advice was to fit smoke alarms on the approach hallway to your sleeping areas, as most fires started in kitchens, garages and other areas. I’ve installed smoke alarms with 10 year batteries ( no need to change twice a year, but still need to be checked on) in my bedrooms, due to the proliferation of devices in bedrooms such as TVs, and especially phones and tablets and their chargers. Very high risk for fires.

Even watching the back of the truck, if you look to the left, you can see the dark smoke slowly vanishing from in front of the neighboring house, and then listening to the raido chatter makes it decently suspenseful. because we can see something IS happening, but just getting to imagine the (cliche i know) Heroic battle going on inside.

Thanks. I'm a believer that anxiety is contagious. If I start getting crazy then others will start getting crazy and we start to lose control of the incident.

As A Fighter myself, Chief, if there was no ldh across the road why not let the neighbor move his car?

I know one thing, I wouldn't have to ask if I should move my car away from a structure fire but I'm not clear why he said not to. Anyone have any insight as to why not?

The street looked very narrow, I think the Chief had a concern that the exiting car would have blocked the next due rig coming down the road.
