Well we got Spring SNOW, and lots of it here on the Prairies! Our BEEF cattle herd is still calving and we had a Newborn Calf born right on-top of the fresh snow. We had to get the calving sleigh and place the baby calf in it and guide the mother cow and her baby into a nice dry, clean Calving shelter found on the other side of the cattle yard. Luckily I caught this cow calving quickly and the baby calf did not sit very long in the snow otherwise this could have been a very bad scenario. However in this case we caught it early enough that it did not cause any major problems. We have been fighting the after effects of this horrible Spring Snow storm for a couple days successfully however I see clear skies moving in and hopefully this Low pressure system finds its way out of the Prairies. This sloppy snowy weather have made us use triple the Straw daily that we would normally have to use, guess we are lucky we had a bit of a surplus.LOL. Making sure the Cows and calves have a thick layer of dry, clean straw beneath them at all times during this bad weather is the key to maintaining a healthy heard of beef cattle.
