In this video I demonstrate how to conduct a newborn head to toe assessment.
Follow along and study by answering these questions.
1. What is the first thing we check and why?
2. Explain the process of using the bulb syringe.
3. Where do we listen to baby’s lungs?
4. What are the main three vitals we do on the baby?
5. What is your “headband” suture and your “Mohawk” suture?
6. How do babies breathe?
7. What is the bump in the middle of baby’s chest? Is it normal?
8. What is the most common abnormality found on a newborn?
9. What is pseudomenstruation?
10. What is it called when the urinary meatus is on the dorsal side of the penis?
11. What is the first stool referred to and what does it look like?
12. Where do we take baby’s temperature?
Got a video request? Let me know in the comments below.

EDIT: Please do not attempt to retract the foreskin on a newborn. It will be tightly adhered and would cause pain. I addressed this in another video but in case you didn't see that one I thought I'd comment here.

You need to edit the actual video. Not everyone is going to read your pinned comment. You can cause MAJOR injuries by forced retraction. This video is spreading false information that medical professionals are now going to share with parents. Not everyone is going to read your edited comment or read any comment whatsoever. I can’t tell you how dangerous this part of your video is.

Nice video. Just want to point out that when using the bulb syringe it should be placed inside the babies cheek. Suctioning directly down the throat can stimulate the vagus nerve, which can lead to bradycardia.

I’m sorry if this question sounds dumb but I’m in middle school and just looking into nursing for high school classes. Would this be part of the postpartum unit? I am want to work with both mothers and newborns for assessments like this. So would that be postpartum or a different job? Is postpartum just mothers? Would just baby be NICU? If there isn’t a job where you work with both mothers and baby’s, what is a job only working with newborns that is not NICU? Sorry for a lot of questions. Thank you!

The prophet of Allah (God) made mandatory the practise of Taḥnīk (تَحْنِيكِ) for newborn babies, which is an Islamic ceremony of touching the lips of a newborn baby with honey, sweet juice or pressed dates. Originally the date was softened by mastication by the pious person and rubbed on the infant's palate. The taḥnīk also *exercises the muscles of the mouth* and helps with the *circulation of blood* in the mouth - this may help the baby to be able to suck and take mother's milk. It is also credited to prevent *neonatal hypoglycemia* in newborn babies. Now tell me. The western world has just acquired this knowledge. With all the gadgets and equipment and technology and professional knowledge, skills and team work - how did a man who neither knew how to read and write at the time of his prophethood, *know* such a thing? Among some many other miracles and prophecies of the future. There is no god except Allah and Muhammad is his Messenger. This is the truth. This is the truth. This is the truth.
