The issue which I think should be addressed is space. I feel like that is the biggest deterrent for starting a lego city.

This is true. You need some sort of building space and room to build. I chose to leave that out of this video, might address it in the future! Thank you for your comment.

Honestly great tips for someone like me who is just starting out making my own City. I think my number one tip is use the LEGO City sets first. It really helped me out as the modular road system introduced with the newer sets helps a ton with dismantling the parts to change them however you want. Same with buildings. Although, the only problem is especially where I’m from, the LEGO City sets are scarce due to Christmas. Thanks for the video!

Fantastic video!👍 You don't even need road plates...I have a pretty large city but it's all inside bookcases and I only have posterboard for roads. It works. Or you can think outside the box and have more bike/pedestrian pathways. There's no limit to imagination! That's why we love lego.

Not a necessarily budget conscious tip but a useful one nonetheless when starting a new city; is to use the MILS plate system. Converting my buildings and roads into MILS makes reshuffling your city so much easier and gives you options to play with more depth and also just looks way better. Great video too

I am getting overwhelmed trying to design my city. I have a bunch of Harry Potter sets, Jurassic World, Prince of Persia and then some old castle sets and the black pearl. All my ideas are in my head and hard to visualize in real life. I don't really have a big area, just two card tables and a really long work bench. This video is helpful, but are their any other words of encouragement. Thank you for the info and have a great evening.
@NewBrickerton
@NewBrickerton 7 ай бұрын
It takes time. You won't have a city you are super proud of over night, just gotta start somewhere. Besides your jurassic world sets, seems like you'd have a good setup for an old world / medieval setup to start with. You can start with a nice MOC or small improvements to your current sets before thinking too much about the overall city. Hope that helps, hard to say much more without seeing all your sets

Another thing to consider for those on a budget. Is the 4+ series. I know a lot of fans hate them for the solid single piece bases, and for being to simple and kiddy. But it can be a cheap way to get some nice cute vehicles, figures, and accessories for your city.

Nice! I would add, even though it might've implicitly been brought up in this video, to go for smaller buildings from LEGO rather than the modular line. I especially like a lot of these 3in1 buildings from the late 2010s till now which are amazingly compatible with each other. There's a video by Jangbricks called "The Joy of Small LEGO buildings... Together!" which perfectly shows the potential of this and the amount of density with going for this scale of buildings. Also helps when you might not have a lot of space. I got the sets 31026, 31050, 31065, 31097, 31105, 31036 for a very small shelf-layout that even has space for the roadplates and I love it. I plan to get some copies of these sets in the future since all of them have pretty competent alternate builds as well. A lot of these buildings also have hinges so they can be closed up or used as larger fassades, so the flexiblity is really good.
@NewBrickerton
@NewBrickerton 2 жыл бұрын
This comment! That's so true. The smaller buildings are great to start out with. A lego city can take so many forms, and I love your ideas. Combining those smaller sets together is another great option!

Great Video and great tips! I’m fairly pure when it comes to lego bricks with the only alternatives being some of my baseplates. I do agree with how ridiculous the base plates are over priced with competitors being cheaper and sometimes better. For instance you can get third party base plates for cheaper that are a full baseplate thick with the advantage of working better with the new roads then the official ones do.
@NewBrickerton
@NewBrickerton 2 жыл бұрын
That's a very great point. The discrepancy of baseplate vs roadplate height is something I think a lot of city builders are working through right now. It'd be easier if everything was a single plate thick. Thanks for the comment!

This is a great video! Here are my thoughts on all 5 points: 1: Small definitely works well. Pretty much all of my city buildings are either from City, Creator, or custom built. I don’t have a single modular set, and I don’t really want any, because I would much rather use that 32x32 space for multiple smaller and simpler buildings. 2: Another plus side to building the alternate builds in Creator sets is getting more pieces. I remember getting a gigantic caravan set and opting to build the alternate lighthouse build instead. I had a decent supply of parts after that, including some doors I could use in custom buildings. 3: I’ve tried to make backings for some of my buildings, but I don’t tend to do it too often. 4: Another good place to look is yard sales. They are basically the best place to get cheap Lego if you don’t care what you get. Granted, you might end up with a lot of stuff from series’s you don’t care about, but you could also find good sets to use in your city, like when I found a Classic house and a Friends bakery in my most recent haul. 5: Even though I mostly use official Lego, I do think baseplates are the best thing to go bootlego on. My winter village uses bootlego baseplates for instance.

I did not have that much Lego when I was a kid and as I got older I wanted to create a town or cityscape. I reduced the scale so my city looked more realistic and the need to use every last piece drove creativity. I wish I had a big empty garage and thousands of bricks because I would be building my own mini New York.

I have been building my city for like 1-2 years but have never been to serious about it since all the good Lego buildings are super expensive and I agree with off brand Lego websites. I started looking at off brand website a month ago and it made me start to get serious about my city like I got a very nice coffee shop that was 2 story’s tall and a full plate size big for about $80 and it had super good interior. Idky lego doesn’t sell their stuff for cheaper with how cheap other people sell their stuff.

Use duplo for filling in areas. They actually match up size wise with Lego. So say you are building a mountain, you can fill it with duplo. Also, the Lego boxes from ikea work for this as well! You can make a facade of a building around it.

I started a Lego City park with the RV Camper, Horse Trailer, and few other smaller City sets. Then got the noodle shop last year, added some other smaller sets, like fire engines, police cars, small vehicle sets. Then put each of those on the large gray plates. I've aldo built a Space "city" that I call Lego Gate -1. I took parts left over from a Dimensions started set, some Mars sets, City Space sets. Plus a spaceship made from the Space Station and pre-owned Mars Shuttle that I got for $15USD. I have used a few off-brand plates, just because I could get them for $1.25 each. Though I do keep my Mego-Blok in a different storage. The small plates are a good way to display sets that might be small, like I was given a couple of Freinds sets. I put those on their own plate to display. I was asked last year to create a Christmas themed centerpiece of a luncheon, so I used a couple of Space crater plates (the 1978-79 versions) and built a pretty large display on those with trees, presents, a couple of trains, and lots of people. It's even lighted. For displaying, I used a bookshelf in my bedroom for the Park and City dioramas. The large gray plates fit perfectly with room left over to park some vehicles. With Lego, the sky's NOT the limit.

That's a very good point. I have a full shelf of sets that I haven't used. Maybe if people are interested I can do a part 2, as I've already realized a few things I left out of the video. The naval ship actually became the base for the town sign as well as the Grey building the avengers tower sits on at the moment, so tip# 2: use what you have also applies here. Thanks as always!

Hello, I just found and subscribed to your channel. Great tips. My son who's 6 and I want to start a small Lego village. we only have around 50ish sq ft to work with at the moment. Smart idea to start small and to not get overwhelmed with wanting the larger modular builds.

Sadly, Lego is really expensive here in South Africa. We don't have stuff like Brick Link and building an entire city will cost more than what my car is worth

I know that this is nearly a year out of date, but in the UK there's a few different Lego magazines, they always come with small builds. Things like fire planes, police jetskis, 4x4, I even have a batman motorbike!! They're pretty cheap but good for details and extra pieces

I'm sure it's already been said and I'm sure it simply slipped your mind with that sunburn, but please try to avoid copyright pirates. I'm not fully apposed to non-LEGO here and there, but some brands pay royalties, some just steal. I'm with you on the baseplates. A farm, a bay, ski area and all that grass and concrete... they add up fast! Hope that skin heals quickly, good man. My city started with a snow groomer. I grew up around them as well as LEGO. Found one a few years ago, bought it, built it. My mom decided I should take the pretty impressive LEGO collection that the grandkids had long neglected. Found all, but a few parts for the 7722 locomotive, Bricklink to the rescue, train complete aaaaaaaand... Yeah, full on layout and growing. This is the 2nd f your videos I've seen. Subscribed.

My city is a town complete with a park farm pier with fish seller and and castle to visit. All my builds are mocs including houses and garages. I only make mocs with exception of the firetruck and the vet ambulance. I also have captain Americas bike but forgot about that. The fire truck was two combined sets. Sadly the garage didn't work out. I also have a dog park and a dinner theater/Jazz club. There is even a spooky forest and hidden fishing spot.

How do I get the new road plates to be at the same level as my modular buildings? The road plates are double the thickness of the baseplate for modular buildings.
@NewBrickerton
@NewBrickerton 2 жыл бұрын
Baseplate is about 1/3rd a plate. Road plate is the thickness of two plates and a tile. Cheapest option: use foam core to elevate the modular building. Standard foam core used for science fair project displays is the perfect thickness to lift the buildings. See Jang Bricks video on this for an example. Second option: underneath modular building, place a baseplate and one plate of thickness around the corners for the modular building to rest on it. It will be the perfect height. Most expensive option: build everything in a MILS system. That's a very good question. I might make a video about this.

If you buy brands like Coby you get quality. Granted Coby is focused on the military builds. (tanks and fighter planes) My tip is ask around on new whitch brands do quality original sets they tend to be of decent block quality. The brands that make knockoff copy paste sets of lego tend to have sub par quality blocks and should be awoided like the plaigue.
