Great tips, as usual. Your videos are so consistent with quality and approach, giving tips, pros and cons, thinking tactically (e.g. the tips) and strategically (i.e. coordinate learning management systems/use of Google classroom within your school to facilitate student ease of locating information).

This is great - thank you so much for creating these fast-moving and value-packed videos. An alternative view on Tip #2: I really like posting all assignments to the stream and I think students appreciate the easy access, too. The stream becomes a chronological index (most current always at the top, and class work becomes the topic-based index). Just another way of organizing. 👍🏼

This has been very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do it. Can you point me in the right direction for how to 'debug/try out' a class you setup. I'd like to add a dummy student, login as that student and see what things look like. Since this is my first time ever using google classroom, I don't know if it is a good thing to do this. Plus, I think I'd have to move all my assignments from 'draft' to publish then reassign back to their publish dates. Sorry for the newbie questions!

Thank you Sam, perfect timing. I know you also helped teachers use Seesaw for elementary level. Could you do a tutorial of how teachers could benefit from the strength of use Google Classroom's topic organisation and draft activity organisation with Seesaw's shared student activity. So, especially iPad app and Chromebook younger children have can more easily find a learning unit's topic and be easily linked to Seesaw's activity for the creative tools to complete tasks. Targeted to for grade 3, 4, 5 where we are preparing them for transition. Hope you think the idea has merit, all your support is invaluable for busy class teachers - thank you!

I use Google Classroom a lot. But I can't understand why Google doesn't add a search bar in it. My Classwork page is crowded with materials. For my personal use, there is no way to make it well organized. A search bar would be perfect.

@@patrickshipway8791 Not really. Classroom hides the Materials or Activities after 10 entries. So you have to keep clicking "show more" until you finally find the thing you add earlier. Unless you already clicked on "show more" enough times, trying to search using Ctrl+F won't help.

We teach 6 science units each year w/about 13 lessons in each unit. The bundle idea is great for assignments, but I wish I had a way to create a Topic w/sub lessons. Now I have to create 13 x 6 topics and it just a pain imo. In Google Drive you can create folders in folders and for me it's more aesthetically pleasing.

Hi Sam, awesome tutorial.. I had a question: is it possible to have students join an assignment via link, but without them having access to the other assignments? (until the link for those assignments are provided individually - later on)? if they join the classroom, they can see all the assignments - ones that I don't want to assign to them yet.
@NextGenTeacher
@NextGenTeacher Жыл бұрын
You can 'schedule' the assignments that you don't want them to see yet; they won't be visible to any of the students until the scheduled publish date. Hit the arrow next to 'assign' when creating the assignment and you'll see the 'schedule' option.

Forgive me if this has been asked/answered, but with Mote audio comments (seems extremely handy), do the students need to install the extension on their end? I always try to minimize that with my second language learners here in Korea who are quite unfamiliar with extensions and most things Google. Your tips couldn't be more timely and useful for me, literally organizing my Google Classrooms all afternoon today! Thanks a bunch :)
@NextGenTeacher

Thanks, Paul! They do need to install it for the best user experience. If they don't have it installed, they can still listen to it, but it will take them over to another website rather than playing the audio directly in Google Classroom.

No, students can still listen to the audio file without the Mote extension, but they will be taken over to the website as opposed to being able to listen to it directly within Slides, Forms, Classroom, etc.

Tip 5: Let's say it is Week 2. Monday is a holiday. Would Tuesday be 2.2 or 2.1? 2.2 for the 2nd day of the week or 2.1 because Tuesday is the 1st day of instruction for the week. Which is a better way to organize?
@NextGenTeacher
@NextGenTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
It's up to you and how you communicate it to students. In the video, I said 2.1 would mean week 2, Monday's assignment. But your system could be 2.1 where it's week 2, but the 1 just means the first assignment of the week. Whichever you do, just communicate it to students. But if I'm doing the second number as the day of the week, I would say 2.2 for Tuesday's assignment, even if Tuesday is the first day of school that week.

Hey Jayne. This reply is super late but thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else has the question. Thanks for the tips. I teach High School Biology and I try to find a system so the students can easily find documents related to the topics we studied throught out the school year. I am not convinced that setting up my courses by week rather than chapters is the best. What do you think?

I also teach Biology and I set up my course by topic. Each post within the topic starts with the day and date. Sometimes I start with T1 W6. Depends on what the class prefers.
@NextGenTeacher
@NextGenTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean-Marc, I think the most important thing is to make sure your LMS is easily navigable and doesn't require interpretation on the part of students. It's probably okay to set up your Google Classroom based on chapters as long as students know which chapter you are on (and you aren't skipping around), and the most recent chapter is posted to the top. If in doubt, ask someone else who is not a student in your class to find your most recent assignment/make sense of where to find work. If they can, great. If not, you might want to refine your organization system.
