As a Newfoundlander who has lived here for 62 years and studied history this Island was made up of many cultures,mainly English who held the power in a British Colony,Fact ,then Irish,Scottish, Portuguese,some French and Chinese etc..There existed slavery here for hundreds of years,they were white Irish slaves who were treated like second class citizens by Politicians and British court systems.Many stories of horrific treatment. In today's society of social justice warriors, let's not forget what went on here.

I was going to write a comment here but after reading Keith Osmond’s comment, he has said everything I was going to say. By the way, I’m a pure English descent. Does that mean I’m not a Newfoundlander?My families have been here since the 1700s. I love our Irish heritage. It’s a great spice to the overall population which consists of English Irish French and anyone else that decided to settle here. we are a welcoming province, and even if the gentleman who wrote this comment, decided to settle here, we would probably welcome him.

I spent 31 years in the GTA. Lived - well, slept - in Brampton and worked in Toronto. Back in NL now. I never had any issues with living in one of the most culturally diverse areas on the planet. It didn't take anything away from me, and broadened my understanding - of my own culture, as well as of the world. I remember coming home once, and going to see a movie. Standing in line for popcorn, I looked around and saw one, lone, brown-skinned person and suddenly realized "everyone is WHITE!" After years in ON, that just seemed odd. These days, in St. John's, there's a vibrant mix. I'm good with that. I think we have a great place here, but it's in danger of dying off if we don't have immigration. Will this change our culture? Probably; culture that's vibrant is always changing. For me, that's a good thing. On my street, there are a lot of people of varying skin tones and ethnicities walking past my house daily. Makes me proud knowing that they could have gone anywhere, but chose to join us. Keep up the good work, Mark!

My son, they got Mary Brown's in Surrey, BC now. It's not about Newfoundland culture being lost, Newfoundland culture is spreading far and wide. Nothing stays the same b'ys, the one thing this person needs to face is their own fear of change!

As someone who is a born and bred Newfoundlander, whose family goes back 9+ generations, I am always so happy to see new people come to this island! Whether its to go to Memorial University, or for work, or even for a vacation, I always love to see it cause I always think how much better the Province will be with them here. From bringing their culture and food with them to make our own culture more rich a varied, to the skills and talents they are bringing in, immigration, on the whole, is a good thing for this Province. It will help to build and strengthen the economy, boost various sectors of work, and add to the rich cultural heritage of this place. are their going to be problems with immigration? Absolutely! You can't consider a topic as big and varied and nuanced as immigration without running into issues. People are people, and people can be assholes. There are New Canadians who are coming in who are assholes, and there are New Canadians who are coming in who are the nicest people you will ever meet, just like how there are nice and assholeish Newfoundlands. Every immigrant is different, just as every Newfoundlander is different, and to paint them all with the same broad stroke is just not a good way of looking at the situation. And as for the change to our culture. To that I say that our culture is already changing and has been since Humans started to walk upright and use fire! Culture isn't a static thing, its a living thing that grows and changes and evolves as the people who make it do, and I think that Modern Newfoundlanders would find Newfoundlanders from the 1500s, 1600s, and 1700s all very different from each other and us. So I don't get the fear of culture changing, its already changing, now its just changing in a different way! Also, just to add to that, just because new cultures are coming in and helping to change this one, doesn't mean we have to give up everything with our cut lure. Just because an Indian or Sushi restaurant is opening up doesn't mean the Fish and Chip place has to close down. We'll keep what we like and store the rest away for history. I guess all of that is to say I really agree with your video, which was very good by way!

Mark, we need more people like you in the world. I love how you are open to what people have to say, even if you disagree. We all need to be so welcoming and know just how lucky we are to be living here in Canada. When it really comes down to it, we are all immigrants here. I guess I probably am the only one, but I really don't know what nieve is? I think it is Spanish for snow? I find it rather hard to know that there are people that think and feel that way in Canada. But, there are many that feel that Nova Scotia and Cape Breton in particular have no other culture. Well said and well shared as many need to stand up and do the same. Thanks!!

I think some missed the part where you said you were reading it verbatim. I chuckled at your continued use without correcting. Love it! I just consider myself a Canadian. One that is a Newfoundlander (My roots are American and British for the most part). My culture consists of Canadian and Newfoundlander as I believe it is an awesome mixture even with parts outside my roots. I am not even understanding what this person wants us to see in Canada and the west? A right wing mindset (not an attack, a simple question to understand as I was totally confused)? I wish that would have been elaborated by them. As a side note, the west coast has a very strong French and Indigenous culture as do other parts of the Island. Scandinavian (Vikings), Spanish roots here as well, etc. It is a mixture. Has the person seen more than the east coast? Coming from west to east I have noticed more Irish dialect than some other parts, but that's about it. I also noticed on the east coast more multiculturalism and acceptance, which was very refreshing.

There’s a difference between sustainable migration, and what we have now, however… 2023 broke records. 1.2 million new residents. Now, Q1 of 2024 had 47% more immigrants than 2023. I am a 2nd generation immigrant, but… the government is mismanaging this severely, dude. In an era where cost of living is at historical highs, Ottawa is laser-focused on continuing to break immigration records.

Culture will change with immigration and with other influences. We will continue to become a global village. Some people will feel a loss. Some things will be lost. Language evolves and some languages die. Do we want to prevent that? More importantly, can we prevent it? Indigenous and French Canadians hope they can maintain their language and "culture" -- whatever that specifically refers to. But the forces of cultural change are bigger than any policy or law can hold back. Best to welcome change.

How's it going b'y, You hit on a good topic. I grew up in NL and we were a breed that was different because of our history. Whoever wrote that comment, should be thrown overboard, you can't fix stupid. I went away for work in the late 70s to Edmonton and it was like going to a different country, I had to repeat myself 2 or 3 times so they would understand, told me I was talking to fast, No, your listening to slow. I was a bit of a hard case, liked to drink, but I got to say racist wasn't ever a thought for me, I just got a dislike for stupid people, and these days their coming out of the woodwork. Like I always said if you cuts me or I cuts you We're both going to bleed red, don't madder the color of the skin. Regards to back home, you can take the b'y out of NL. but you can't take NL out of the b'y, I been away 45 years ( except for vacations ) and still misses the water, always will. Last time I was back was to bury Mudder a few years ago and I seen the way things were, not the place I knew. I've been interested in this topic a lot lately, because I had an epiphany a couple of years ago. For the past 500 yrs. the West, Europe and then America conquered and then dominated the world, but now I think the worm has turned, the third world is now invading the first world. Not in terms of power but in terms of people. This is the problem with liberals and the Left, they don't understand that people from different cultures and different parts of the world are different. Like really different, different on a level that you can't even comprehend. You must be really careful who you let into your country, just like you must be careful who you let stay in your house. Look what's happening to Western Europe, they let in people who not only do not assimilate but who actually want to conquer and take over. It's bad to be racist, it's bad... On the other hand there is nothing wrong with preserving your cultural identity and values, in fact it's paramount! Let in people, but very few, and vette them well. And for God sakes keep the Alluhah Akbar crowd out.

Im 35 and funny enough i remember seeing my first black person i was around 5, not because we were racist but because of 2 other reasons. 1 being it was something we didn't talk about because race really doesn't matter but mainly 2 there just wasnt very many immigrants here. The past 5 years alone ive seen many businesses opened by people who immigrated here and just in my immediate area there are 2 African stores 1 chinese and 1 Filipino grocery aswell as some arab/ halal places. Im happy to see many different cultures and ethnicities here now as i get to learn cool things and meet amazing people that other wise wouldn't. As a side note i do seem to hear some people have this idea that our government is only helping non natives to NL, i just dont see jt that way

Kudos to you for speaking up about this issue! The fear is real and many are feeling it. The reality is that our economy needs people and one way our government is dealing with this is through the immigration. The World belongs to all of us but the economy is controlled by the big corporations, and when it comes to money patriotism plays no role in the process. We owe it to ourselves to raise above our own understanding of the World and the issues in it!
