I grew up in New Street just s short walk away from the Market. Was it Tuesday Market day? I remember Thursdays as early closing when shops shut at mid day. No 24/7 open times then. I loved the Market and never missed visiting the flower market on the opposite side of South Street. You can just see the green entrance doors early in this video. The smell (scent) was amazing. Thanks for the memory

My late dad is in this, the guy with the hat on ringing the bell. We thought it it could be the Isle or Wight where he was living.

Bloody shame it's not there anymore, , get rid of morrisons and marks and expensive and put the market back where it belongs, , , I remember the market very well as a kid we used to go and see all the cattle being sold off and being loaded in to the back of the trucks and of to their new homes, , my friend has a video of the market from the 70s just before they closed it down to make way for the new builds , and if im not mistaken Newport football club was just behind the market place before that was moved to where it is today, .,.,.,.,. Great upload 👍👍

Wonderful video, I used to love going down there in the 50s. Of course a lot of the animals went straight to the abattoirs in Scarrots lane making it all wonderfully local. Of course now animals nearly all have to go to Winchester to be slaughtered. Shame😟

My late dad is in the video but we lost contact with him in the 60s. We know he worked at some cattle market but we thought it was the Isle of Wight where he was living at the time.
