Idk I’m not sure what this is and how it showed up on my feed but I’m from Newport News/Hampton!

Sick of all the comparisons. I’m from Portsmouth grew up in the 80’s and 90’s when you couldn’t even walk through the city if you or your family wasn’t known. But times change be happy that they are cleaning up these neighborhoods and making it safer for our youth rather then debating on who hood the toughest. Fun fact: there’s a hood everywhere you go and everywhere you go there’s someone who will peel your cap no matter were you are so don’t ever be fooled by how something looks nor take it lightly.

I was stationed in Newport News, while CVN-72 was being built in the shipyard back in 88 -89. It is crazy how fast you can be in a really crappy neighborhood and then you turn two corners and it looks like Homes of the Rich and Famous.

Hey Charlie, your're perfecting your craft as a journalist for a specific sector of society. I hope you get big enough to branch out to other hoods globally and not just black people. You would be the ONLY journalist covering intimate street life regularly, which will give people a better understanding of how diverse working class and poor neighborhoods are. Continue to sho the good, the bad and ugly. If you don't mind, I would like to share some advice. Lean into what you're doing as a journalist because that's what you are now. Take the time to research and study situations and during questioning, script your questions so you know major topics you prefer to cover. Keep it organic of course. You know the deal, I'm just adding my wack 2 cents because I know you can dominate this niche area of journalism. Whatever made you focus on this was a blessing in disguise. I would be great if you could make a living doing this full time and hire people familiar with other culture to do the same.

WOW!! I've never seen so many housing projects in such close proximity!! There's one project, cross the street and there's another project, and two blocks away yet ANOTHER project, and on and on it goes!! I have to say most of these projects appear attractive and well kept, at least from the outside.

Together, we must continue disconnecting from their culture and way of life. The projects show the benefit of spreading the units out and reducing the concentration of people in any given area. The best projects I have seen so far on youtube.

I'm from Newport News, born and raised, it has its mini hoods throughout the city like any other city, but DOWNTOWN past Mercury blvd off Jefferson ave is a whole new situation LOL.

Newport News is a long narrow city and you were driving around and around in the lower two miles of it! Some truly great people grew up in this area! Next time your in town take some time to visit Pinketts Beach, Huntington Beach and Park, the 9,000 acre Newport News Park, the Mariners Museum and its 500 acre park, the Virginia Living Museum. Drive through some of the other neighborhoods and enjoy the beautiful mature trees, sidewalks and attractive moderately priced homes! NN is also home to the largest shipyard in the nation where we build the biggest and baddest ships in the world!

I live by the sea in Norfolk, England and can honestly say I would move to Newport News in an instany, especially those houses with the columns that are on the thumb nail! This video really cheered me up and that takes some doing in the present climate, just wanted to thank you and God bless you and your family and friends, Ray.

It's hard to believe I was born and grew up in NPN, but it's been like 15yrs since I've been there. On one hand, not a lot has changed, but on another, a lot has changed. Guess after seeing this there's still no reason to ever go back lol

next time you're in VA you should check out Petersburg, that city has some rough spots for sure

In the late 60's, NN was pretty decent. The only really rough section was on Jefferson Avenue headed through the really old-town section and some of the low-income housing apartments!

downtown newport news is pretty quiet if you're just down there minding your own business.. honestly the less people you know, the better

Finally VA !!

There are a lot of good people that live down there some of my favorite clients have been there for years there's really only a few bad areas otherwise it's a lot of older people the big problem with violence is the drugs it breeds but when people can't afford a car the buses don't run 24 hours a day and there's almost no place to work cuz there are no stores down there really people got to feed the families somehow some of the greatest people I've ever known come out of downtown just saying plus it's one of the only places in the world where carrying a large stick means you're not looking for drugs or trouble LOL

Salute to my old school Hampton University! I got plenty of memories in the 90's of hittin the clubs up on Jefferson Ave in Newport News. Harlem Nights was a dope club. I also remember those gun shots in the club parking lot too. I grew up in Newark though, so the shit didn't faze me!

There is wisdom in downtown Newport News. The dangers are common. I lived there and it's nice. To be afraid of the people there is pointless. Reason be, fear is what sections you "down there". "Bad Newz" is an illusion that makes you look like food to us locals. Also, when I moved from there more up town. I found more people pretending they loved in hoods more threatening. I was stopped by police omw to school accusing me of someone else and almost searched without permission (understandable though, I was late to school), and my first apartment was broken into while I was home. So the the only thing "BAD" about Newport "NEWZ" is the news your getting.

Have good family down there. & oh yeah don't let the smooth taste fool you. Bad news is not to be taking lightly. 😎✌ much love from D.C.

just like every other place in this generation, these hoods once was really tough & vicious...of course I'm talking about the 70's,80's & early 90's before social media & gentrification....these hoods would be flooded with goons after school let out everyday...that's why we have so much talent in the 757, we use to play tackle football against rival neighborhoods like every week & full court basketball games...its just weird that the basketball courts in this generation are often empty even on beautiful sunny days.

22nd & Chestnut 08 & 09. I ain’t never had no problems. There are some no no areas out there tho like 16th st, Ivey out by the towers all that ain’t for no foreigners. This is like 1/3 of it all lol. You still got Midtown (Dresden) and Uptown (Beechmont and Aquaduct). From da duct to the lawns lol.

When I was visiting jersey my sister needed to go their rq and when I tell you that place is hood its hood🤦🏽‍♀️ boarded houses, junkies on the side of the road, police yellow taping, kids on the streets selling stuff to make quick money, abandoned houses vandalized or being used as hide outs. Man go to that place its crazy
