Martel worked his first ever match in New Glasgow. He’s returned often when he is in the area. This remains one of my favourite matches ever.

This is 1984. Not 1986.

I was at this match, remember the Forum was packed. Leo also had NWA title shots at the Forum against Jack Brisco and Terry Funk prior to this.

Talk about being unprepared, the ring announcer called the AWA the American wrestling ALLIANCE!

So much more heart and believability than todays stuff (mainly talking WWE).

That was such a beautifully laid out match and the story told within and outside the match was perfect. Burke gets put over without winning the title, Martel is made while again at the end, the fans believe Burke can win the title if he gets one more match with Martel, and they set up the next feud for Burke. Perfection. The only cherry on top would be if they could have timed two arm drops in the sleeper and the third one about to happen just as the bell rings. The fans would have gone ‘banana’! 😆

My god, what a tremendous job of the build up for this match in the first 15 minutes!! Gave it such a big fight feel that no promotion even pulls off today. Such a great time to be a fan back then!

Leo Burke held that headlock for almost 6½ minutes! Wrestling sure has changed. Nowadays WWE features 2 minute matches full of high-spots! Barely any wrestling on the wrestling show anymore.

would have been nice to see one of the best workers in the game, Leo Burke, win the AWA title just one in his career, even if it was just briefly !

Would love to have seen them actually wrestle in a room. That would have been awesome im sure.

Around the 30:00 minute mark, Martel cowardly is beggin off to Burke, and then again around 31:00...."please, pleassse, don't hurt me Leo, please, no no no!"

It was always exciting when Martel would be suffering, and start begging in the ring, at this time in his career...it was kind of turn-on seeing him look like a begging coward (30:55) when he was supposed to be the champion, and Burke was the perfect guy to have him begging to in the ring, really had Martel looking like a fn pansy-champ...
