This practice is commonly done all across India. Even in my region in North I've seen it with my own eyes. The behavior of the possessed person varies based on the the ancestral God(Kul devi or devta) who is invited to be prayed but one thing is very common in all that the possessed person gets filled with enormous energy & after the God leaves the body of the person gets unconscious from weakness. Normal person cannot tolerate those energy in their body.

Each year most of Tuluvas( Tulu speaking people from Udupi and south Kanara district of Karnataka) visit their ancestral homes to participate in the nemas. Its a real festive season at that time with all the families getting together. Summer holidays are always spent in our native place . Nemas are real spectacle to watch.
