Norm visits Old Schwamb Mill, the oldest operating custom frame factory in the country. Back at the workshop, he uses both stock molding and several original designs to demonstrate the techniques used in making picture and mirror frames. Norm is one of the original makers. I loved this show as a kid and still love it today. This and The Woodwright have inspired everything I've made my entire life. I never took wood shop in school, but I took it every Sunday on PBS in the early morning...........well, early for me.

Great stuff. This was the only time I've ever caught Norm actually using a power tool BEFORE giving his admonishment on shop safety.😄

Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule than to wear these, safety glasses.

I have never seen any safety glasses like Norms. I can only Find those horrible clunky plastic things that never sit over your glasses properly.

What a nice "trimmer" device! We now use shooting boards and bench plane for this. It is much more convenient to trim a couple of hundredth (one thou at your side of the pond) each shaving until you get to the equal sized boards.

I just don't know if I could build that sled that precisely with just a framing square. I"m sure I wouldn't hit 45 degrees, I'd probably be at 43.678 or something.

How would we do this without your specialty tools? All I have is a hand saw and miter box. Show us some alternative ways of clamping corners, or securing corners. Is it possible to achieve a bevel on the mat without buying that fancy tool? Please, please show us some simple things as well as your master craftsman projects.

If all you have is a handsaw and a mitre box you could still make one of the simpler frames demonstrated here. Painters tape stretched around the outside edges on the mitres has enough hold to keep things aligned during glue up. You don’t need much force if the pieces are accurately mated.

Could always build a jig and use wedges as a clamping force. A small palm router won't set you back much and can put any profile on the frame

A bit late but … I just realized what you can do! Don’t make miters at all. You can make very precise butt joints, or you can make two parallel sides protrude a bit on each side, making it a detail. No, you can’t use moulding, but you could decorate the wood. If you use beautiful wood, or do a good job with paint, who cares if the corners are mitered.
