The DA predicted that the document would be needed years ago and put together the terms which could cover most eventualities and outcomes. The agreement obviously provides some structure, conditions and guidelines to protect the smaller parties in the coalition and there is nothing wrong with being prudent. Rules are needed to protect those which have helped the ANC to have another shot at governing. Hopefully, the GNU will employ competent people who have the interests of South Africa at heart. This will be a bumpy ride and as Helen Zille said in her interview it took the DA 10 plus years to get the Western Cape to have some form of order. Getting South Africa will take longer and we need to be realistic with our expectations and also be patient and supportive. The PA should be thankful because they do not have the experience of the DA the it comes to coalitions and we don't need people slowing this down.

The point about voting for the many small parties being a vote for the ANC relates to the fact that all of these small parties never received sufficient support to get seats in parliament and if the voters clubbed together the opposition would have taken additional seats from the ANC. With additional seats the opposition would have had more leverage. For example Rise Mzanzi. It was a huge disappointment. The DA is being pragmatic. We need the GNU to work and if it does the masses will start believing that this is the way forward instead of the current situation where the scary ideology of the EFF creates division.

@@WilliamPulles Correct and the fact that they had the foresight to predict that this was coming and to draft the document to protect the minority parties in the coalition is to be commended. They have helped speed up the process of getting the GNU to work. Imagine if the coalition had to appoint a committee to draft an agreement. 6 months down the line the government would still not be operational. If changes are needed they can presumably still be made but it is the basis to work from. The DA are completely right in informing the ANC what is needed for a coalition to work. We have all in the past seen the ANC in parliamentary sessions ignore facts which did not suit them, protect incompetent cabinet ministers etc. This will not work in a coalition and they needed to be told this up front by someone with experience of coalitions. People just don't like the very competent messenger because she is a white jewish woman with a better understanding of South African politicians than most.

That question has already been answered by Helen Zille in a recent interview. She understands the difficulties of coalitions and perhaps one can learn from her response.

Furthermore, there are only a few senior positions (Cabinet Ministers etc) on offer and more than a few ambitious individuals. In the interview Helen Zille mentioned why coalitions expired in the past. Not saying that it is going to be easy but the ANC don't have an option. They have to go into a coalition with one party/grouping or another. If this does not work they will have to either attempt to make up with EFF and MK or run a minority government which will be shut down after a vote of no confidence. There are incentives for all in the GNU to make it work.

Why are the leaders of these parties disparaging one another publicly? Journalists are doing their jobs. Helen's comments about Mbalula were very condescending and should have been reserved for private discussions. All that is happening is showing just how dysfunctional these people are.
