Starlink users in South Africa are facing a major setback this month as the satellite internet service provider has warned that it will terminate services for those who are violating its terms and conditions. Thousands of users across the country have been notified that their internet services will be terminated by the end of April. My Broadband Editor Jan Vermeulen explains.

So - in this, the Information Age, we rural folk with poor or no internet service are denied access to information !! I’m talking schools, hospitals, police stations, security services, etc. Talk about Freedom ? Not so much - we need this service…

Keeping SA people in the dark is huge business… looks like people will be in prepaid phones for a very long time .. Cable tv and telephone lines are a thing of the past for almost 20yrs now

Type approval is a process where a regulatory body, such as the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), verifies that a product or device meets certain technical and safety standards before it can be sold or used in a particular market. Licensing is an international requirement, and there are other African Countries where Starlink is not licensed, but being used. Those countries are now clamping down on lack of respect for local and International Laws.

Other countries don’t have infrastructure, hence they need Starlink. But SA is mostly connected, so they can afford the stand-off for compliance.

For those judging SA go and look at how long India blocked star link, it was for 3yrs. It was only offered to be active from this month in April. They told them they need to work with local companies or they won’t exist at all. In the end you need to protect local businesses no matter what. Look at what Temu which was launched this year February in SA and now it’s April but it’s driving local businesses crazy. Regulations need to protect the public and the country overall.

Local businesses has obviously not helped so far. If they have their own rockets etc go ahead. I’d say it’s just a way to keep the traditional system going, on cost of people across SA that relies on this for stable internet access with greatly promotes education and economy

Politics aside, we need to thread carefully around starlink. It has advantages like coverage but it won't benefit a regular individual, we have been pushing for lower data/internet fees and the local carriers have been somewhat listening. Starlink will destroy our local industry to a point where it becomes a monopoly and unragulatable given Mask's arrogance. I see a lot of commentators are focusing on the BEE with so much negative emphasis that kind of makes a regular citizen a bit angry, but we need to go by the rules and regulations. We are a sovereign state.

Put the state aside for a second. Starlink won't be as inexpensive as fiber, ever, or be as fast. As long as the local companies get to the rural bits eventually, this will be used only as a stepping stone. But, the reason we don't have fiber there yet, IS the government. See the last 30 years for context. Bloemfontein, where Telkom's head exchange is, already had fiber optic telecommunications in the early 90s...
