In Episode 4, Hop Culture Magazine Founder and Untappd Director of Strategic Sales and Media Kenny Gould heads to the City of Beery Love.
In Philadelphia, Gould travels down a back alley to a rolled up garage door with a little green light on to visit one of Hop Culture’s 12 Best Breweries of 2021. Challenges the head brewer of a lager loving industry hidden gem to a foam chugging race. And drinks at one of the top five places in the world to have a beer.
If you’re looking for some of the best breweries and bars in the entire country, this historic city should probably ring your bell.

So far, this is my favorite episode. Awesome to see Monk’s Cafe on here - it’s absolutely a legendary beer bar! They brought the Belgian style beer game to the East Coast alongside some crazy limited American beers that they only get. I remember having my first Pliny on tap there. Keep the episodes coming, Untappd!

There's a brewing company in Philly that also makes good beer. It's called Two Locals Brewery which is Philadelphia's first black owned brewering company.

These are awesome videos. I would love to see some Florida videos. Florida has an amazing brewing scene, especially in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, Tallahassee, and other areas.

@@untappd4695 Motorworks Brewing in Bradenton. Just down the street from Motorworks was Darwin Brewing, but they sold out to a Tampa-based brewery called Magnanimous Brewing, but we haven't been there. There are some other good ones in the Sarasota/Bradenton area (Big Top, Good Liquid, Sun King, 3 Keys), but to pick a third, I will have to go with Deep Brewing in Tallahassee. 🙂

I was devastated when St. Benjamin's closed in 2018. It is not too far from Temple University and it became a hot spot for me and my girlfriend. Good to know it is still in good hands. Next time I'm in the area, I'm stopping at Human Robot.

Stellar job on this. Fermentery and Human Robot are absolutely the two best breweries around here, as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been to them so many times, but really cool to get some behind-the-scenes insight on their processes.

Love how true to the beer nerd culture of philly this is. These arent the touristy "Victory" and "Yards"; they're best of the best in the area--especially Ethan and Co at FF. Their knowledge of beer is unmatched. Hidden River, Love City, Tired Hands (contoversy aside) and Other Half should all be checked out!

I've had great beers at Love City. Another place to check out is Evil Genius, since most of their beers sold there at "The Lab" are only available there.

Monks is absolutely a necessity for beer drinkers when in Philly. You could have a different beer a day for a year from Their beer bible, not to mention their mussels are phenomenal. If you happen to be lucky enough you’ll even snag some Pliny when it comes out.

@@amw898 Thanks so much for letting us know you miss the scallops! We do, too. The price of the U10 scallops we served has gone up so much, it's not possible to put it on the menu. If the price of scallops ever comes back down to reasonable levels, they will return.

If you feel like taking the drive outside the city…Tired Hands Cafe, 2SP, and La Cabra are awesome. And if you really want to take a ride..Hidden River is really really good.

Actually I made it to Human Robot for some milk tubes yesterday! While I was in town I tried a few local beers and TBH I was most impressed with Love City Lager - light, crisp, flavorful, and exceptionally clean. It's like $5 at most bars too!

Oddly, this was nearly my same trip to Philly just a few weeks ago. The only difference was substitute Love City Brewing for the coffee spot and add in South Philly Barbacoa.

If you ever come back to Philadelphia, you have to go to beer peddlers, a beer store in Philly but they literally have the best selection around. Hands down.

Love the episode, but I think it may be worth coming back and visiting some of what's happening in South Jersey. Places like Tonewood, Glasstown, Gusto, and The Seed are all part of this greater Delaware Valley brew scene.

I live around the corner from Monk's (and have lived in Phila my whole life). It's gotta be my favorite place here, there's just nothing really like it. I wish there were more micro-breweries here more towards that area of the city - most of them tend to be in Northern Liberties/Fishtown.

For season 2 you have to hit Asheville, NC. Great beer and food town with big (Sierra Nevada, New Belgium) to small (Bhramari, Catawba, Green Man, Hi-Wire, Wedge, Wicked Weed) breweries - enough for 2 episodes!

@@untappd4695 First stop Finns Manor to get your bearings, quick walk to Our Mutual Friend, then maybe head out to the suburbs to visit Cellar West and Westbound and Down’s new location. From there I’d either drive up to Fort Collins to see Crooked Stave or west to Frisco to see Outer Range.

@@untappd4695 There are too many to list but Peticolas, Celestial, False Idol, and Turning Point all come to mind immediately. Peticolas being my number one as they offer so many different styles of beer and are also self owned and distributed. Michael Peticolas and his family are amazing and the story is great!

Would love to see you check out Triple Bottom Brewing next time you're in Philly. They are a triple bottom line company (beer, people, and planet) and focus on hiring folks who might have a hard time finding a job in the traditional workforce (people who have experienced homelessness, been incarcerated, etc). Their beer is good and their mission even better.

@@kenhunt The owner was forced to step away about a year ago due to allegations of a hostile work-environment. True? False? I dunno, but it's caused them to take a back seat for a bit as some of the beer crowd has been hesitant to associate with them. Not here to perpetuate rumors or anything, just worth noting
