Next Time You Use Midi, Use Song Mode!

Every week we have people asking us how they can stop 'tap dancing' when playing guitar.
I always assume they don't literally mean tap dancing and rather mean they want to hit one button on their pedalboard and have multiple changes happen at the same time. My apologies if I've misunderstood you in the past.
This is absolutely possible and made easy with midi. Today we are specifically talking about the PBC series by RJM, but a lot of companies have some sort of take on Song Mode / recalling presets easily. I haven't found any companies implementing this as well as RJM - hence why they are the focus today.
With Song Mode (and presets in general) you can hit one button on the PBC and do any number of tasks at the same time. You might want to...
-Turn off all but one of your drive pedals while changing the tempo of your delay while also adjusting the mix level on your reverb while changing the lighting rig in the venue you're playing in (not kidding).
-Go to a favourite sound or preset you have saved for your pedalboard while also bringing up a new page on the PBC which gives deeper control over one or more of your pedals.
-Change the order of your effects (on the PBC 6X) and turn on / off multiple effects at the same time.
The options and combinations are endless. Song Mode makes this very easy to do in the context of songs or grouping of presets that you want to recall quickly from day to day.

What switcher would you recommend for a board with both midi and analog pedals, to achieve the same result? Currently I'm using a switcher from Audio Endeavors that controls my Big Sky and Timeline, and I manually setup my songs in the Strymon library tool such that song 1 is in bank 001 on both BS and TL, song 2 is in bank 002, etc., and I manually switch my drives and modulation pedals as needed. I'd like to be able to do all this with the click of one button.

Great question. It depends on a few things...How many pedals you're running, are you doing stereo or mono etc. But I'd say a great place to start would be the RJM PBC6x (if you want to grow into it and not have to change it in future). If you want more basic control you could check out the GigRig Midi/Loopers - they just released a new line. not as full featured, but still great products. Even less complex / easier to use - Disaster Area has an 8 channel looper but I don't think that would be the best fit for you from what you've described above.

@@GoodwoodAudio Thanks for the reply! Some more info: when I play live at my church, I split to stereo at my Timeline and go stereo out from my Big Sky to 2 Kempers. My board starts with a polytune 3 mini, walrus deep six, vertex boost (these 3 always on), and a volume pedal. After that are my pedals that I'd want to control with a switcher: ehx crayon, jhs double barrel, walrus julia, timeline, and big sky. I'll do some research on the RJMs and GigRigs! Thanks again!

@Goodwood Audio quick question, i have a PCB/6X pedals in the loops and an H90 aftere the unit controlled with Midi. it changes presets fine when i hit a preset the H90 is included in but when i go to the next preset that 'does not' have an H90 in it, the H90 does not bypass..do i need to have the PCB6/X tell it to bypass when its not in a preset somehow?? cheers, Andy

You could send a bypass CC# on that preset that doesn't have the H90 included. That's what I would do at least.

Does it hook up to your pedals and if so. How would you hook your pedals up to it

this is a midi setup... so you need midi connections on your pedals (they need to be compatible with midi) and then all non midi pedals could also be placed in the loops to turn them on and off per preset / per song etc.

am I doing something wrong here? when I put tempo from songs it does not change on my timeline ...

Possible... It should change on the TL. Hard to say without having the rig here. Maybe check out the RJM forum! This would be a common question I'm sure. But yes, it should change across all midi enabled pedals with tempo.
