I think the acoustic lens is controlling the polar response which has more effect on sound staging than simple phasing does. Many speakers have a narrowing polar map as it nears the upper frequency limit of the driver. But if the lens is balancing the overall off axis response, then the reflected sounds will sound very natural and similar to the on axis frequency. This is rare in speakers.

For 22 years I have had Paradigm Reference tower speakers and Studio Reference center. They are outstanding on every genre of music I play on them, as well as tv. I have recently been going and listening to different speakers for comparison, and I think Paradigm…even with their age….are equal to, or superior to, all the speakers I have heard. One exception would be the B&W 702s…….which are more than twice the price. A totally different sound, but they really give an excellent presentation of recordings.

These speakers really surprised me. After a long break-in, they became much less bright than any previous Paradigm models I've heard. Paired with a low-power Luxman tube amp in my small listening room, the sound is beautifully clear, smooth and accurate. Superb imaging. Very efficient. They aren't as warm as Harbeth or Sonus Faber, but they def are not "bright" after they break in. Great speakers for a small tube amp.

Are you still enjoying them Rodger? Did you listen to other speakers before deciding on these Paradigms?
@rodgerk.
@rodgerk. 7 ай бұрын
@@cafiveohsrockbandremix9254I directly compared the Paradigms to Sonus Faber. I still adore these speakers. I had to pack them up a few weeks ago for a move and even though I have another system to listen to, I miss the sound of these. I’ll have a much larger listening space in the new house and plan to replace these with Spatial Audio speakers, but I’ll definitely find a place in the house for these to live so I can continue hearing them.

@@thomasward00 So you are telling us, you bought speakers that are bright cause you bought them blind??? You dont check how they gonna sound in your home with your equipment? Yes sure, Harbeth and Sonus are warmer, but with correct electronics they are not bright. In fact you have the possibility to adjust your sound from brighter to darker. And brighter sound is less borring, feels faster, more detail, makes thrumpets really shine. I had studio series and Signature series and I got one set of electronics on which the same speakers sound brighter or darker depending which signal out i choose. to connect This speakers are not for begginers, they also need the right size room with correct set enough far from the walls. And those walls nice to have some diffusors or/and absorbers. After you complete requirements you gonna be glad your sound was bright, cause now after toning it down, you might start to get loosing details and some smoothnes if tone it more. If you like darker sound choose Wharfedale Elysium.

I know it’s comparing bookshelves to floorstanders, but considering they’re very similar prices and judging by what was said in the video, the Polk Reserve R700s are probably the better all-rounder with a deeper bass extension. But I’m even more curious on your take on Paradigm’s tower offerings now to compare apples to apples.

Thanks for this interesting review- interesting in terms of your experience of the soundstage and imaging. I guess your beautifully treated room helps to bring out those strengths. I use the bigger brothers, 120H. The 2 amazing things about them, except for the out-of-the-world bass, are the voices and the music enjoyment. I have never heard individual voices in harmonies as clearly as I hear them through these paradigms, even with R&B music; and I love how I just enjoy listening to music of all genres. I look forward to listening to music everyday. I believe your review of the 120H is coming soon?

Re: "The Look" sounds like a "guiro" -- long hollow wooden percussion instrument with several notches in it and you drag a drum stick over it to make a scraping ratchet sound, coupled with a high-hat on what I'm pretty sure is Linn Drum or an Linn Drum emulator. The Linn -- one of the most classic, well known, drum machines ever made that, in spite of the fact most are turning 40, they're still coveted on recordings as a gold standard. You've heard it your entire lifetime and but probably didn't know it.

Hi Jay's, in my original post I put the incorrect model number of the PSB speaker I was comparing to the Paradigm. I was auditioning the PSB Synchrony B600 which is $1000 more expensive than the Paradigm. My conclusion was that PSB wasn't $1000 better than the Paradigm per my choice. However I do agree that the Paradigm is more in need of a sub.

I hear you on the non-fatiguing but fatigusing speakers. I had a pair of Audio Vector bookshelves that did that, I can't say that they were bright in any way, but the amount of information being thrown at me fatigued my brain. I think that's due to the information demanding so much of your attention instead of just existing in the room and you having the option of tuning in when you want to.

The sound on “The Look” by Metronomy (at least initially) sounds like a small cymbal, perhaps played with a drumstick close to the bell of the cymbal but it morphs into more of a “scratching” sound, I think the sound of a Latin Guiro, also played with a stick, which is most obvious at the end of song.

I have mine connected to a nad c700 sounds great but i think they need some more power. I wonder if upgrading the amp and keeping the nad as a preamp a good idea or another integrated amp ? I was also thinking of getting a small sub , and that would free up some power with the sub taking care of the low end .

measurements might explain what is happening. Are they flat? Does the reviewer prefer rolled off, limited frequency response on top? How about bass? They don't attempt to play too low as to distort bass and other neighbouring frequencies? Another KZfaq reviewer also mentioned that another small bookshelf he had offered up more bass, but no measurements, perhaps an artificial bass hump on the other speaker's part? Both reviewers indicated it responds well to upstream gear, including cables, as per the July 1 video.

Reviewer comparisons are usually new speakers to new speakers, but I've been cross-shopping some used speakers, too, based on price (Cdn $1,500 range). This has turned out to be a lot of fun, actually. For example, I just swapped out a pair of Elac Unfi UBR62's for a pair of B&W CM6 S2's from 2014, piano black, tweeter on top. I believe they retailed for $3k-ish, but I paid $1,350 (just as airy and less laid back than the Elacs). This opens up a whole world of interesting comparisons: If you have $X available, what can you get, new or used?

Back in the 60,s in Sydney, there were only about 6 brands of speakers you could buy. As i did not have much money back then i could only afford the drivers with no cabinets. I bought a pair of Goodmans Axiom 201 speakers which were 12 inch speakers with a smaller cone in the center. They were rated at 15 watts continuous. My dad built these huge enclosures with a port cut out in the front. I still remember how they sounded, and, to this day, have never heard any speakers to rival them.

Jay, What you are discussing at 11:25; Did the other speakers you are talking about have the diffusers in place when you tried this particular track? Sometimes it is hard to decipher the differences you are discussing about soundstage because your diffusers have not resided in your room that long. If you make any comments about soundstage comparisons with other speakers, you really should let us know if the other speakers did not have the diffusers in place. Otherwise, it is not a fair comparison. Thank in advance for taking this into consideration.

I really hate the way high-end audio stuff is sold -- the nearest dealer is about 1,000km away from me (in Europe) and they don't even list this model -- and give no prices for anything they offer. This is typical here in Europe ... hate it :-/

perhaps Jay it is the attention to phase correction that is making you " hear everything."?

Upper midrange emphasis? That's the absolute last thing I want in a speaker. Ear fatigue? Bass to only 50-60hz? Count me out.
