Who plants onions in Fall and who plants onions in Spring? Well, it depends on where you live. What kind of onions do you plant? Well, it depends on where you live. Can you grow onions in containers?? YES!!
I'll break down how to grow onions to a simple formula in this video. Plus because onions take a while to produce, and in the meantime take up valuable garden real estate, you can interplant to save space in a small space garden.

We have always purchased onion transplants form out local seed store. We have also had pretty good results. This year we are going to try and start our onions from seed in the house. So wish us luck!

Last year, I grew onions for the first time, and I used sets, and they grew beautifully. A few started bolting, but most didn't. They averaged the size of a large baseball.

Lovely onions. Just an FYI, you decide to plant clover, remember, that deer love clover and will travel a long way to get clover. Hunters use clover, soy beans, and, corn fields to attract deer. So, if you have deer living close by, be aware of them coming into your garden. Also, deer can jump pretty high fences.

The problem with sets is they are 2nd year, and all they will do is go to seed. I used to buy sets and could never get bulbs; just split underground, and send up flowers. Don't waste your time or energy or money. Seeds are much cheaper anyway, but keep in mind onion, garlic, and chive seeds are only viable for one year. I'm watching this video again!!

All alliums (the onion family of 600-920 species)- onions, egyptian (walking) onions, green onions, garlic, shallots, scallions, leeks, chives ... wild ramps (onions), wild ransoms (garlic) ... flower lilies (day lilies, tiger lilies et al) ... (yawn). All have the same categorical needs for sunlight, grow zone, and growth requirements. Ever wonder why you can't grow onions and flower lilies in your zone - wrong species for your grow zone ! Something that the seed companies or retailers have in common - they don't know, or they won't tell you. Same as mis-selling yams as sweet potatoes. Main bulb onion categories : red (purple), yellow, white, and sweet. Some are mentioned as Spanish red, yellow, and whites. Smaller pearl onions, spring onions, and cocktail onions are just harvested young white onions. Short day (southern grow Zones 7 - 11, latitude 25 - 35 degrees North). Plant in Fall, grow through Winter, harvest in late Spring. Intermediate (day neutral) (grow Zones 4 - 9, latitude 32 - 42 degrees North). Grow in any moderate temperature zone, sunlight hours not a factor). Plant in early Spring in northern colder regions. Plant in Fall in southern warmer regions. Long day (northern grow Zones 3 - 5, latitude 37 - 47 degrees North). Plant in (post-frost) early Spring as soon as the ground is workable. Harvest in mid- to late- summer. Bulbing is triggered after the summer equinox (June 21) in most northern regions. Search out the many onion (et al) grower-supplier websites for all of the many different varieties that can grow in your area. 100s to know and understand.

Sets are great for feeding the neighborhood pests. Never seen one grow to harvest. Ive finally bought short season seeds and im going to get them started this week. Also i have a constant supply of green onions from the Egyptian Walking onions my sis in law shared with me 15 years ago. Love them! Thanks for the timely post!

I use seeds, I refuse to buy and onion to plant an onion. I might as well go to the store and buy onions. Sets have never worked well for me either. I'm in Southern NM on the border with Mexico. We have a pretty long growing season but with temps in the triple digits for over 45 days of that season. Our winters aren't as bad as the North of course but we do freeze regularly and get down in to the twenties and teens at times.

We are in Southern New Mexico as well. So who knows as to how far we are from each other? As mentioned the transplants have worked good for us for many years. This year we are going to start from seed in the house and to be transplanted in mid February or early March. Do you know of any semo local KZfaqrs from our area on here? We follow a few of these people. Then all of them are in a far different climate than we are, Thank You!

I found out that I could grow seeds on the plants during the second year of growing them in the garden. They flower, make seeds and are still edible. I also planted shoots from store bought onions but never got huge onions. Harvested from a different zone, right? This year my seeds did not sprout well and last long enough to plant. Maybe I didn't water them enough? I will still try again to grow them even though now due to a hospital stay last year they don't sit well with me, but I like to grow them. I guess in Northern Illinois, I need short term onions, but I have never seen that on the seed pack. Thanks, Brian. Another great informative video. May the Lord keep blessing you and yours.

This year I started onions, leeks and scallions all from seed. Short day. Germination was good but despite the special self watering seed starting trays a lot died out. I have started more seeds but also ordered a bunch of short day sets just to be safe. Also started Louisiana shallots and Egyptian walking onions. They are doing so so.

I grew onions last year, and I really didn’t get a good harvest out of them. They were small, probably about 2 inches around. I think that’s because I broadcast them and they were growing on top of each other so I tried to separate them out a little bit. This year I’m planting one or two seeds in the different areas around my garden, particularly around the brassicas.

The first time I tried growing onions, 2 years ago, I interplanted it with lettuce. Unfortunately, I densely planted the lettuce, which towered the onions and blocked the light. No success there. Last year, I did everything right, I fertilized and directly sowed neat rows. A couple of days later, my dog had jumped the fence blocking my bed and dug everything up, trying to eat the granular fertilizer I had placed in the bed. This year, I'll be adding a higher fence around my U shaped bed to keep my dog out. I want huge onions like the ones you harvested! 🤞

I have an 8x8 ft square space of garden I had sweet potatoes in and harvested. Im in SC. Plan to grow cabbage, lettuce, onions and kale in there. I usually use rain bird copper drip irrigation but looks like you can do closer plantings with the black strip irrigation tape in your video. What product is that strip of irrigation? Will it connect to my black rain bird conduit tubing?

I grow long day onions from sets as I'm in the UK. Sets work really well for me. I have tried growing from seed but the season wasn't long enough. I lost this year's crop to onion leaf miner which was very annoying. Leaf miner only arrived in the UK 15 years ago but it seems to be everywhere now. I don't know how to get rid of them.

I am kind of angry with Home Depot. I didn’t know about the long day, short day onions. Why would they sell long day onions in So Cal? I planted these last Oct. First time I have attempted onions. So…I now have giant green onions that are bigger than the largest leek you have ever seen…with no bulb. 😳😩😡 My question is… I can still eat these right? I can chop them up and freeze them, or cut them and put them on tacos and in soups? Next year…ordering slips from a reputable seed company. Suggestions appreciated.
