Worked for me! Thanks! But I did not do everything in this video. I extracted the mainboard and removed all plastic parts and rubber parts. After that I protected the rest of the sensitive components with aluminium foil, such as the standby button and and the volume rocker, the sim card tray and the proximity/lux sensor. Than I used a heat gun (approx 180 °C for 90 seconds) to heat up the same chip like in this video. After cooling down I assembled everything and it started successfully for 2 minutes. After that the bootloop started again. So I repeated the process with approx 210 °C. But directly after the 90 seconds of heating up I pushed the chip gently towards the mainboard with a wooden stick. After cooling down and assembling, it works permanently for me. Never had a bootloop again. I recommend to assemble the phone completely except of the back cover with the NEXUS text on it. But I would assemble the cooling plate and the plastic backplate and also the screws, because they are pressing the heat spreader against the chips. So if it continoues to boot but because of heating issues, this wont help you. I did not use any fluid or (ESD-)toothbrush. Just heat. I had a heat gun without temperatur adjustment. I measured the temperature before with my weber grill temperatur indicator. So not that accurate, that is why I started a little bit lower. So if you tried it and you got only a temporarily fix, just try it again with pushing the chip gently downwards. Maybe this will work for you.

Worked for me. First we used a flux pen as this was the only flux we had. We applied the flux over all the "faulty" chip and all the components and chips around the "faulty" chip. We then heated the motherboard with a common household heatgun and had a thermometer (thermocouple) located just above the chip in question. Note we could not focus the heat to only the faulty chip as our heatgun had a big nossel. We approximately used the following heat profile: 100C for 1min, 150C for 1min, 210C for 50sec, 150C for 1min and finally 100C for 1min. The temperature was adjusted by simply moving the heatgun closer or further away. We did not clean the motherboard for residual flux as we forgot to do so - and btw there was also no flux residues to be seen. I will update this comment if our fix continue to work or not. ...Update: The fix worked for only one day :-(

So far, so good. Good enough to backup data. Fingers crossed it stays long enough I can get my money's worth out of this phone. I was skeptical buying the 5x because I had 2 Nexus 5s prior to this that both fell into bootloops. I suppose my skepticism was validated...again. Thanks for this post!

It Works! I didn't have a heat gun so I used a lighter

If you cannot afford a hot air station, take the cover off the phone and use a hair dryer on full heat for about 1:30 seconds around the area with the most surface area (processor area) after it's nice and hot, leave the cover off and try turning on your phone, it should boot long enough to retrieve your personal information. I was just given one of these phones and spent hours banging my head, I thought it was a software problem, here it was a hardware problem all along. (pretty common with processors that don't have adequate cooling) Anyway, if you want a decent phone, buy a Motorola, they are built like tanks.

Mine right now is out for repair and the initial reflow didn't work. :| so now it's out for a new power chip or something. Honestly I'm so mad about these dang phones but I appreciate every video out there to help folks work through the issues with them.

1:24 You also want to use plastic tools to avoid damaging the plastic pieces. The actual chance you will short or bridge something taking off the plastic piece is very small.

I replaced my failed 16gb with a used 32gb and put the non-working one in a drawer. You're welcome to use it as a test subject and see if you can replace the RAM chip and get it working, if it's not too costly.

Great video, very informative. I have a bit of a different problem... I can't get my phone to turn on or even take a charge unless one special battery back which is super old and I assume doesn't have some sort of overfeed protection... It happened after a beta update to 8.0...before that the phone was getting very hot and extremely sluggish. After watching your video I decided that it's possible that there was a defective solder joint on the main board where the USB type-c port may have been damaged... I inspected everything and didn't see any visible cues... Do you have any other recommendations?

What you should do if you have this problem is, if you want to get the data off the phone, do this and get the data off it first, but if you don't care about the data on it you can skip that and follow this guide:forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/tool-bootloop-death-blod-workaround-t3819497 If you want automatic updates, follow the directions in the second thread on that post. If you are going to do this I recommend also flashing an OmniROM-based ROM for the most seamless installation of updates. If you want increased security, you can generate your own signing keys and replace the ones in the zip with them, then transfer the updated zip to your phone.

Sadly it's just a temporary fix like this. I had to reball the chip and get all the old bad solder out to completely alleviate the issue.

Don`t you mean 380 degrees Celsius, as solder flows at 650 degrees Fahrenheit. 350 degrees fahrenheit will not flow solder...

I wonder if this is partly due to the lead free solder being more susceptible to cracking as the CPU & RAM expand and contract as the CPU heats up during use. Could reballing both the RAM and the CPU with old school leaded solder be more of a permanent fix?

I sent mine into LG for the bootloop, but they apparently found "water damage" and they did not repair it (there was no water damage, and I have since learned they commonly use this excuse). They sent it back (after getting $19.95 for a diagnostic fee), but when I opened it, I realized they left out the L-shaped EMF metal shield. I am going to call them (preparing to be frustrated), but in the meantime, is it okay to use it without that shield?

Hi! I'm having a similar boot loop problem with my Nexus 5. My first idea was that only the power button is failing (a new one is on the way), but i tried to wash it through with contact spray, even with wd-40, since i had nothing to lose. But it had no effect. Do you have any idea, how could i test if the power button is the problem, or something like the one in your video? I'm afraid i have to start looking for a new phone... :/

What happens when the SoC gets in direct contact with the heat ?? It had worked the first time then the error came again. I did it again and the device worked again. The device has no root and the bootloader is too. I installed Substratum the next morning and Andromeda from XDA ran the script on the pc. Later, the device did not start anymore and stayed in fastboot mode. Now it does not start anymore. So I ask if it can be that it does not start because the Snapdragon was too hot. because otherwise everything looks good. ??????

Watching on a Nexus 5X. Strange that on two occasions mine bootlooped and the first one stopped after Factory Reset. The second incident got fixed by uninstalling Shareit. Other vids recommended using a copper plate heatsink. Any thoughts how much longer mine will last with a heatsink mod?

I have a Nexus 6P that started boot looping. Tried reflashing all partitions (except userdata) and no luck. Cannot even get into recovery only fastboot. I tried flashing modified boot and recovery images to disable big cores also. Is there anything else like this to try?

i tried as in the video but nothing it started and after few minutes went down so i used another temperature cos 380 °F was not enough so i used for 1 minute 450 F with a peak of 500°F with a square tip for solder hot air. Now is working it s almost passed a day, it seems everything s ok. Anyway i putted a large piece of tape biadhesive in the rear of the chip, so it's more pressed.

What you're heating is the "Samsung K3QF3F30BM-QGCF 2 GB LPDDR3 RAM", not the eMMC

The only way to actually is the flash a custom rom onto the phone but it will void the warranty and you will lose all your stuff so if you still have warranty and this happens then i recommend just getting a new phone
