re: caseplay #2 - your answer is correct for NFHS, it is a foul ball because it didn't go to the catcher's hand or glove first... however OBR and NCAA have changed their rule so that this would now be a foul tip. do you have any idea if NFHS is going to revise their rule to match the other codes? I know the 2023 rule changes are out already and this isn't in there, but as a state association IC you might have heard rumblings about a possible change coming?

Watched a bunch of these videos. This is the first time I didn't understand the answer. Case 3 is what I'm talking about. But I guess because the foul tip didn't get caught by the catcher then it's dead. Read that in a comment and it made sense then.

Case play #2 changed for MLB (I know this is only a video about NFHS rules). That would be a foul tip in OBR currently. NFHS it's still a foul ball... And Little League. I don't know the other rule sets.

NCAA changed to match MLB the following year. I believe this was a 2020 rule change for MLB, and NCAA followed in 2021 (but I could be off by a year)

What happens on the 3rd foul tip the catcher catches it and then drops the ball? If the batter does not run is that mean the batter bats again?

I don't understand the statement that, as soon as a ball touches a player in foul territory, it's immediately foul and dead. How do we make plays in foul territory? Surely if foul ball is bobbled and then caught, it's still a fly out. Why is it different for the catcher?

The NFHS rule is not the most clearly written. However,the case book does a great job clarifying a specific ruling. FOUL BALL/FOUL TIP 2.16.2 SITUATION A: B1 swings and tips the ball and a) the ball goes directly to the catcher's glove and then rebounds to the catcher's chest protector, then the ball is caught by the catcher; or b) the ball goes directly to the catcher's chest protector and then is caught by the catcher. RULING: In a), the pitch is a strike and remains live. In b), this is a foul ball.

Fouls are not dead when they are caught. So what is the rule that makes #3 dead?

Rule 2-16-d. Patrick explains that a foul tip can only be caught by the catcher. You may be thinking of a caught foul fly ball.

@@kennyaubin Found what I didn’t know in rule 5-1-1d2. A dead ball … becomes dead immediately when … a foul ball … “2. goes directly from the bat to the catcher’s protector, mask or person without first touching the catcher’s glove or hand;” I knew a foul ball would become dead as soon as it touches something other than a fielder (which is 5-1-1d1), but didn’t know thus particular situation covered in 2. Because without 2, the foul ball off the catcher’s equipment would still be live and could be caught by any fielder for an out.

"The difference between a foul tip and a foul _ _ _ _" (BALL is not needed to be enunciated). The ball is either LIVE (made so by declaring "PLAY") or DEAD (made so by declaring "TIME"), the words Live and Dead should never be uttered during a game. Note that the word is not A-L-I-V-E.
