He was the player who made knuckleballs popular. The reason why Roberto Carlos didn't bounce balls as you said is because this means to put top spin on the ball what Juninho could also do perfectly. But you just do topspin balls if you want to shoot over the wall that the ball comes down behind the wall when you are very near to the goal (20-25m are ideal for topspins). Roberto Carlos just shot so powerful he didn't need to put it over the wall, he either put the ball directly to the corner where the goalkeeper stand but they couldn't react so fast or he put sidespin on the ball to shoot around the wall.

As you pointed it out so well, Juninho was so good because he mastered pretty much all of the free kicks techniques. He could do knuckle balls (was one of the first players to do them regularly before Ronaldo & cie) and also had some mean curved balls. He could go top right, top left, bottom right, bottom left depending on where he was on the pitch. Simply unpredictable and unstoppable.

Juninho was the best free kick specialist of all-time. I wasn't even a fan of Lyon but I sometimes watched Lyon's matches just to see Juninho's crazy free kicks.

Fun Fact : Juninho was the first to establish the ritual of training with the ball of the next match to practice his free kicks, at a time where balls weren't standardised in Ligue 1 he would ask for the club to buy a bunch of next ball's match and then practice all week with Lyon's second goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre, jjust to perfectly adapt his strikes to the ball.

He was the captain of our Legendary team here in LYON. he was such a nice guy too. He will be forever a legend here in Lyon. I remember watching him playing at Vasco vs Botafogo in the Brazilian Serie A (He was already is his late 30's) and there was a free kick at 90+2 and I got super scared. Any free kick was like a penalty for Juninho. He didn't score, but the ball went perfect bellow the corner of the crossbar, good thing Botafogo's goalkeeper was great and saved the goal.

I will remember that freekick against Ajaccio in 2006 all my life man. I was in my bed watching the match. Then he put the ball on the ground (it was very close to 40m out) and I could see in his eyes that he was going to shoot!!! I stood up and said "no fucken way, he's not gonna shoot!!" (the French version of it) and he scored. when they showed the replay, you could see the ball was going right then left then right again. the goal keeper did not know which way to go!!! that was just amazing...

His way of hitting the ball is called "folha seca", which stands for "dry leaf" in portuguese. It was invented by Didi, a brazilian player who played with Pele back in the 50s. Esentially, you hit the ball with the center of the instep. It does not rotate (check the close ups in the video) and the ball falls very quickly, it goes up and then down like a...dry leaf, that falls into the ground.

There is a technique with free kicks called the knuckle ball (CR 7 does this) where you hit it hard with absolutely No spin to alleviate the aerodynamics and this is what makes the ball ”wobble” in the air like some of Jouninhos free kicks in this vid and a nightmare for keepers as you said. The bounce before the keeper is helped by a ”top spin” on the ball..

Roberto Carlos didn't make the ball bounce in front of the goalkeeper because he was basically a cannon shooting the ball at a certain target. Juninho could also kick very hard but had more technic.

After Lyon fans got "used" to his free kicks, most of the time , when they would get a free kick, they would just start yelling " Penalty" ... with J. it was kinda the same thing ... when u look at the range on those kicks, anything let's say within 40m from the goal was a potential goal .... so they would just start yelling " yeah, we got a penalty "

The main caveat I would say is some of the walls and keepers really didn't do their job on a few occasions, if Juninho had of played in one of the four top leagues - he played in Brazil, France, Qatar and the US, not leagues exactly known for their defensive prowess - he would've still scored a lot of free kick goals but I doubt he would have taken near as many free kicks and wouldn't have scored quite as many as 77.

Knuckleball or i say floater, he was the master, others liked alot of curve. Its really hard for goalies when the ball bounce in the small square in the penalty area, with the speed and the floating ball it's very hard.
