I'm originally from the UK, but I've lived in Australia for over 10 years now and consider Aus my home more than the UK ever was. I immediately enjoyed AFL when I moved here. But I never really saw the comparison to rugby myself, except for maybe how rough the contact can be. Loved Joel Selwood, and was sad when he retired last year. He was always getting a bandage wrapped around his head. Geelong Cats are my favourite team, they won last year. This years GF was on saturday just gone with Collingwood winning 🙂

Hate to tell you Joel but America was also colonised by the British and sent their convicts there to work as well. Love watching your reaction to our AFL. The early games were the most harsh and those men were really hard men. They weren't paid very much to play and often worked on council jobs who would roster them to fit in with football training.

You may be under the assuption that there is no penalty for this behaviour because there is no send off rule in AFL . Instead, player who offend are reported by the Umpires to the AFL Tribunal. There are reports all the time on illegal hits and other dangerous play . Tribunals can finish a player's season in one foul sweep or could bar them from playing (stand them down for the entire season or only one, two, three etc. games ... depending on the severity of the transgression. This is taken pretty seriously. Those significant blows you were watching are the worst going back in some cases 40 years or more. The players are like athletes abd gymnasts rolled into one. Early on (40 years ago) one team had ballet teachers instructing the players on how to jump to take high marks, which is an imporyant part of training now. These men lean how to fall without injury abd have bodies so well tuned they are like machines. They are tough. The worst problem for them os tge wear abd tear on their bodies as they age... Arthritis, knee and hip replacements are common problems of the vetren players. The multi generational football families like Moore, Danihee, Richards, Sidebottom, Abblett, Bews, Rioli etc also carry a legacy they don't want to sully with a Tribunal rebuke. The Best and Fairest Award called the Charles Brownlow Medal... also affectionately called Charlie (large 18 carat gold medal worth aroun $4,000) is awarded each year and field umpires express the best each match, however players who get reported and don't prove innocent lose all chances of the Brownlow. So it is a bit of a deterrent.

To answer Arturo's question - it has become much more regulated of late. If you make contact with another player above the shoulders, it is high contact and is illegal. Least severe incidents will see free kicks awarded against them. More severe incidents, like the bumps shown in this video, will likely be reviewed by the Match Review Panel, who can hand out summary penalties or refer more serious matters to the AFL Tribunal. Players would likely be looking at suspensions for a number of weeks if they did that nowadays. The only defence, really, is to prove that the bump was incidental as part of the passage of play (in other words, you ran into each other while looking at the ball) and you had no intention to make contact with that other player.

I never really understand the rugby comparisons because if anything, NFL is actually MUCH closer to rugby than AFL is - "tries" are like touchdowns, both have rectangular fields, both are about running the ball forward past lines of defence, both have 'field goal' kicks after tries/touchdowns for extra points and kicking a field goal is worth less than a try/touchdown, etc. AFL is completely different in every regard, big oval field, you have to kick goals, tackles have a different purpose, and a lot of the rules and flow are actually closer to basketball (strangely enough) than rugby or NFL. The only thing I can see that's more similar to rugby than NFL is the uniforms (eg. Small shorts and no pads or helmets).
@paulkazzer
@paulkazzer 8 ай бұрын
The AFL has the same concerns that your NFL has for long term brain injury so many of these head high tackles ( or below the knee) are outlawed now. The players run 12-14 km per 2 hour game so their fitness is impressive.

You must look for 'fights' during matches, particularly rugby league finals in the 1960s. We play this game from an early age. I 1st started playing Footy at around 9 Yrs old and we ran and hit hard, even as little kids, but that was back in 1975 Back then it was a much tougher game, not as fast, but you could get away with harder hits and they were expected. Today's game is faster, the general size of the players is larger and I think the players are quite a bit fitter. When you consider the size of the grounds, "Footy Ovals", we play on, the ground covered and the contact being made, you would be hard pressed to find a single sport that comes close to Aussie Rules for sheer intensity, brute power on display and speed and agility.

Players aren’t removed at the time but can be suspended from 1-8 weeks depending on the severity of the illegal play. Fights on the oval will end up with every player involved being fined, around $5000. It is a rough game but there are more rules than a lot of people realise Our family are one eyed Fremantle Dockers supporters 💜⚓️💜

The player flattened at point 6.50 was flattened again in 1993 whilst playing for another team in an unfortunate head clash with a teammate. Play was stopped for at least 25 minutes. Eventually he was taken directly from the ground by ambulance to the hospital and was still unconscous. It is rare that an ambulance is actually required to enter the playing arena to collect a player. It was a very serious situation, more serious than anyone knew at the time. The player was interviewed last year and revealed that he had only recently found out from the Offical who had travelled in the ambulance with him that he had stopped breathing on the way to the hospital and two ambulance officers worked constantly to keep him alive. He was so very lucky there. There has only been 1 player who due to a clash like you have been watching where the player was left a quadraplegic and I hope it never happens again. I love the game and I know accidents happen although I do think that some players at some times just go into win at any cost mode. There is quite a lot of rivalry between clubs. Most clubs have a rivalry with Collingwood. Definitely try watching a full game for the context of how the bumps and fights come about. Australia today is made up of many nationalities as is America and like America a lot of people chose to emigrate to Australia.

The hit at 5:38 was at the time up to umpires discretion. Nowadays any hit to the head is given a free kick and depending on the severity can be reported like the buddy franklin hit early on. AFL used to be much more dangerous, head contact wasn't a large concern until concussions later on in players lives were causing strokes and permanent brain damage which the governing body then brought in rules to protect players against head high contact.

Hi guys. Just so you know, some marshmallow AFL players do wear long socks for extra protection. There have been players that play out games with fractured skulls, broken ribs and punctured internals. If you think this highly sanitized vid is tough, you missed the good old days with 'Captain Blood' Jack Dyer, 'The Blonde Bombshell' Carl Ditterich, 'Lethal' Leigh Mathews (who accidentally ran into a point's post and snapped it in half), Kevin 'Cowboy' Neil and the 'Fabulous' Phil Carmen, who was given a 20-week suspension for head-butting a boundary umpire and for striking a St. Kilda player! In his comeback match, he was reported again! During the 1990 Garnd Final between the Bombers and Magpies, ten players and officials were reported. The Bomber Captain was handed a twelve-match suspension! Of course, you don't get sent off, only delt with later. Hope you all enjoy your AFL journey. Cheers from OZ. Go Bombers... BTW, the 2023 Grand Final is this weekend. You should tune in. It will be epic.

I've heard it described by an American who knows AFL as the speed & hands of a NFL WR , height & leaping of NBA players with the endurance & speed of soccer . Action is 360 degrees

AFL is most similar to Irish Football and also has a version called Marngrook invented by Indigenous Australians. Top AFL marks and some longer plays would be interesting to see your reactions to! Its a pretty stunning game to watch, incredible athleticism.

You guys have to watch some rugby league, especially Australia vs New Zealand! Whilst we consider ourselves “cousins”, there’s a huge sports rivalry between us. And my favourite part is there’s rarely a game without blood!😍

great to see you back into AFL Joel. Bit ruff video to inroduce mates to game tho. BTW Joel Brits sent their convicts to the US before Australia. I'm not up on the actual history but fighting between UK and France to get ur independence. Couple years later convicts sent to Australia

in general your only allowed to tackle between the knees and shoulders, any head contact is penalised and your def not allow to throw elbows, like sometimes accidents happen but if you go past the ball or delibratly take someone out its a free kick to the opposition and can even get suspended for x amount of matches and have to pay a massive fine to the afl association what ever thats called. Edit: i'd like to also point out they take head injuries super serious because of the whole brain scaring/ Traumatic Brain Injury thing, there was a couple of instances where players have well been totally normal people, they suffer these things then end up assulting/murdering. it happend to a couple of players and a big mention from the US side would be chris benoit if i remember correctly he ended up with surverer brain trauma and ended up murdering his family.

Head is now a protected part of the game in AFL. If you hit someone in the head nowadays you can expect to get suspended weeks but this has only come about in the last few years.

The comment about Aussies loving their gear (drugs) and partying is spot on. We are the largest users of cocaine and MDMA in the world and especially cocaine use is largely normalised in a way. Quite a large percentage of the population "get on the bags" every weekend. Then there's getting on the beers as well.. We have a good time and look after each orher though!

You guys should do a review on some of the best goals in AFL (Aussie Rules).. and by the way there are always hits like that in every game, you are also allowed to Shepard opposition players off your team mates so a lot of the hits don't get seen on TV best to go to a live game.

Early 90's and before you could get away with a lot more. Now, any head contact you are almost guaranteed to be suspended for 1-3 games. Forearms or any deliberate strike to the head will get you 3+ games

Regarding the section where you blokes asked if this stuff is regulated or not, the bump you had just seen was considered to be fine AT THAT TIME. It would mean a VERY long ban nowadays.

a lot of veteran AFL players are coming forward with early onset dementia before they're even 50. We love our game and dont want to see it get any softer but at the same time its becoming a real problem with the sheer amount of concussions happening during games.

A little over 20 years ago dudes used to throw hands lol. They'd get in trouble but not as in trouble as they would get today. I still remember the 2004 Grandfinal where two dudes were borderline helicopter punching each other in the head. AFL reactions are fun. If you wanna see what some peak skill looks like, look up Dustin Martin and watch one of the compilations that come up. The dude is fucking insane

Enjoyed watching their reactions- now I kinda wish we could have a reaction video with the friends, watching the mid air jump collision’s that we get in our footy matches too- cause damn they look way more epic and painful lol Edit- the ones where one player uses the other as a ladder to get to the ball and hits the ground hard after🤷‍♀️👍🏻
