How much bigger do the boards have to be?
@wholesomecomment45

@@garse70 Huge, think about it. There are possibly thousands of players they scouted for each round/position. If a team wants a.. say a RB, they would have their list of options but also planning out for which rounds as well. They would maybe have a few for each round or alternate plans and etc. They legit would have walls of players' names.

If you search for, “get an inside look at the NFL draft war rooms”, there’s a dozen+ photos of various teams’ war rooms w/boards in the background, circa 2014. Covers half the wall typically. Different boards w/different info on them. Aside: I wonder how long that info is sensitive? I’d rather my competition didn’t know what we felt was critical last couple years.

My favorite thing is that “Draft Day” is all about the Browns overcoming the pressure to draft a massively hyped quarterback who has serious character concerns, and then only weeks after this movie came out the real life Browns literally drafted that player in Johnny Manziel
@AdamKlownzinger
@AdamKlownzinger 2 жыл бұрын
In the movie, they traded up for the smart but unpopular pick in Mack ahead of the popular quarterback with character red flags, and it paid off. In real life, they traded up for the popular quarterback with character red flags instead of perhaps staying at #4 and making the smart but perhaps unpopular pick…also in Mack. And then Mike Mayock said, “This is just like the movie Draft Day”. It was a perfect Browns-ing.
@AdamKlownzinger

My favorite part of that whole thing is that they had that pricey pricey study to determine who the best quarterback was in that first round range and their report came back with Teddy Bridgewater, and they just totally ignored it

@thelastmanonearth2631

@@jjmisiewicz7342 contracts weren't set by pick back then. In fact, Russell is the main reason for the rule change. He negotiated a giant contract that they couldn't just get out of, but they cut ties the moment they could afford to. As far as trading him, who on earth would have taken him? It's unlikely we'll ever see a bigger bust than Russell.
@bigbearkat2010
@bigbearkat2010 Ай бұрын
I thought they did this in his second or third year. He held out negotiating his contract for so long he missed the entire training camp and even the first couple weeks of the season so I'm pretty sure this DVD test would've broken some kind of player's union rule if he's not actually signed yet. The reason they were doing the DVD test was because he wasn't showing nearly the amount of improvement he should've been at that stage and they had a feeling based on his previous behavior that he wasn't studying game film.

Staley's outgoing personality must be rubbing off on Tom - GM's are hired because they are a "people person" - that's part of the job requirement for a coach. Nice to see him reminiscing about his first time in a draft room, moving magnets around because it illustrates a principle. If we are faithful in the small things, often times bigger opportunities come later.

It's a good movie but hard to watch as a big NFL fan. So much of it is not accurate like Tom said. I know they need to change things up for dramatic affect but it's obvious no one involved with this movie knows the least bit about how the draft works. They would never start looking into a player's background the day of the draft. Even if they had the 15th pick and the player was expected to go #1, they would still have notes on the guy going back at least a year just in case he slips past the first 14 picks and he's still available. Or they may have done the initial work just to determine if they're even willing to draft a guy.. Teams mark guys as undraftable all the time. Could be medical reason, could be attitude issue or someone who just doesn't fit the style of play for that team.

Man trust me y'all got it so good with Tom. I'd kill to have him be the one drafting for the Patriots instead of Bill and a bunch of yes men. Our last draft we finally had a legit GM for the 1st time, and we end up with Mac Jones at 15 which looks good so far, Barmore at 38 who should have went in the 1st round and is already one of the best DTs in the league. Rhamondre Stevenson who's got all the talent to be a legit star 3 down back, and a very versatile speedy LB in McGrone who we stole cuz of injury issues. Then this year it was back to business as usual after Ziegler left for the Raiders and had a very successful 1st year as a GM, and the Pats just reached on literally every single pick in the draft and took a QB in the 4th and 2 RBs when we already have a great RB room, and I won't even get started on Cole Strange lol. When this movie came out the thing that I thought made it a little unbelievable was the moves the other GM's ended up making. Like I understand it was just a drama filled story line to tell the story of a GM that negotiated so well that he won the draft undisputed but other gm's would never change their minds the amount of times they did in this movie to set up the kind of thing that ultimately ended up happening. GM's in real life almost never change their minds on draft day, it's incredibly difficult and hard to get them to change their original plan and goal. They all prepare as hard as they can and have a very solid understanding of who and what they want in the draft. To see them changing their minds about a bunch of different players on draft day is just ridiculous honestly.

That was really cool to watch and a few learned lessons along-the-way... Telesco mentioned they research the guy for a full year in advance and "sometime's two" years in advance. Because the margin is so slight between winning and losing in the league that I have to believe Telesco isn't the only team in the league researching a player 1-2 years out. That's got to be common practice and the guys who outwork the others maybe researching certain players 3-years out. Telesco said now doing the work on the player you're going to pick after making the trade is unadvisable. I think it safe to assume teams do "some" amount of work on even on players they don't expect to pick just because somewhere down-the-line they might be involved in signing that player as a free agent or trading for that player ala the Rams trading for Matt Stafford last year. Information is king and you can never have enough information. He mentions the scouts "do this 24/7 365 days-a-year"... when teams are interested in certain players, you can bet NFL scouts have watched every play that player has ever been on the field for 10-12-15x not only observing the obvious but also looking for little nuances so realistically... scouts have probably watched 500-1000 plays of a player before filing their reports/recommendations while the so-called "draft experts" have watched maybe a half hour of KZfaq video highlights yet the general public actually puts stock into what some yahoo draft expert thinks as if THAT's the guy to pay attention to. This is why players go much earlier than expected or slide, because the NFL teams are operating on much more information and at a much deeper level that a bunch of PFF guys, or ESPN guys who came out with their "Big Boards". My favorite takeaway is when Tellesco under his breath mutters, "Ahh mocks" discounting them as meaningless and he's right. Mocks are just a waste of time yet people get excited about them and actually use them as some sort of means to measure a player's value. Mocks are nothing more than fairy tales and if anyone who believes in mocks must also believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and Tooth Fairy. Adults with experience on the other hand just see them as a waste of time. Tellesco NAILED it here. I'm a life-long Rams fan, and will die a life-long Rams fan but watching Tellesco here is making me lean to becoming a Chargers fan in the AFC. I sincerely wish the Chargers have a great upcoming season and with Herbert at QB they have a very bright future for the forseeable future. Good luck and Go Chargers!

I remember seeing the trailer for this and being so excited then watching the actual movie and being so disappointed. Anyone who is even a casual football fan knows that scouts are NEVER unprepared, especially if they're gonna make a trade, even more so if the franchise is considering a trade up to #1.

@@jessedeleon4123 Haha! EVERY time I complain about something in a movie not being realistic, that is what I get. I go, "Come ON! They could/would NEVER do that!!" My wife then hits me with, "It's a movie." Or I go, "WHY did they do THAT?!" She says, "It's in the script." Agghhh!!
