For those of us who are old enough to have seen this goddess of the Broadway stage in the original production of DREAMGIRLS where she originated the role of Deena Jones loosely based on Diana Ross and the rise of the success of the Supremes in Motown. This performance today takes us back to her show stopping performance in that show. Sheryl along with Loretta Devine and Jennifer Holliday caused multiple show stopping applause moments nightly at the Minskoff Theater with their dynamic performances. I saw this Show and Miss Ralph and her show sisters 11 times and watched Chaos and explosive applause each and every time I was there. Never before or after have I seen a show cast do that. And YES! She still has it!!

The full lyrics for anyone who is curious: Lift every voice and sing, 'Til earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the list'ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on 'til victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, 'Til now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.

This is my childhood. We sang this song so many times in music class in Washington, DC. We sang the star spangled banner and this. It was the norm so I'm surprised to find that younger folks don't know about it. Not only did we sing it we had to know why and you learned the true history of America. The song just gives you hope of the possibilities. But alas people would rather sing the National anthem with it's demoralizing connotation. Imagine always having to create something separate because you are not wanted or celebrated in the mainstream. They also make sure you know it was written by a black person so that even if you like the song you may reject it just cause.

So regal, what a rendition. If you know the history of this song, the pain and hope from which it was birthed and what it has meant to Black people over time, you know why this moment is so special and her defiant march at the end so powerful. Yes, she embodies the beauty of the song and our struggle - perfectly. Well done to Mrs. Sheryl and to all the creatives responsible for delivering such a memorable performance. ❤ When I was growing up, music teachers at Black schools would teach this song from day one of the school year, so that every student understood the lyrical intent and knew the arrangement to be able to sing it proudly at every single assembly, special event, etc. Miss those days.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native land.

I'm sorry that You don't know your history and the meanings behind important assets to the American people. We are Americans whether we are black or white or any other race, the left wants you to think otherwise and as long as you believe they are for you you will always be their sheep and their votes, they don't care about You and they never did i.e HISTORY, I wish people could come together and enjoy the National Anthem (Star Spangled Banner) together as Americans like we all are and the meaning It has. The National Anthem isn't racist or dividing or for a certain people it's for Everyone no matter the race unlike what the left wants you to believe. It's for the soldiers that died for you no matter Their race. It's for the people that make this country Great.

We As Americans...wait hold on, I mean black Americans grew up on this song and sang it in schools and churches. Did u know this song was originally made for Abraham Lincoln? Also, u say that that soldiers died for this song. I hope u do know that in the very beginning, black soldiers were being treated very differently because of the bolor of their skin than white soldiers. They were given the worst jobs, although they had exceptional skills and strength in the military and treated like they were lower. Also, let's talk about the Star Spangled Banner. That song wasn't written for black people. It was written for white people cause it had a racist lyrics in it that were wiped out from it talking about slavery. Lift Every Voice is a song about Black Americans rejoicing about hope and freedom. Yall the same type of people tell blk people to go back to Africa and now wanna bring up division and segregation?

Well, the act itself is sort of divisive, considering no other culture is represented with this anthem, especially considering that this was the only other “national” anthem was sung. It didn’t seem like the same treatment was given to Hispanics, Asians, Mexicans, etc. As a black individual myself, this just comes across as pandering and racial favoritism. At least the Star Spangled Banner would feature people of more than just one racial background. (“Feature” meaning we would see more than just one race shown on camera during the performance).
