Great tip on that old slab holders reference site.

I've been collecting this holder for few years up to a dozen. They will DEFINITELY be a collector item especially when someone starts grading holders in the future!!! OGH,rattlers, white label and the top dog NGC'S original black core! Stay safe and Peace from the Sunflower State!!!

when I got some coins in these holders I was still new to the hobby . I never gave it a second thought . That is why I only use reputable sellers and distributors .

I picked up a 1887 Morgan graded 64 that is in a 1989 or so green PCGS holder It’s faded yellow it really threw me off>

I have 2 coins in the Gen 8 holder. Both coins are sporting the STAR and the T (TONED) designations which were also introduced by NGC around the early to mid 2000s when these slabs were used. Both coins are Jefferson Nickels and one is from the Appalachian Hoard which were mostly housed in the Gen 8 holders and many were given the T designation for their toning.

Have three authentic coins that are the same grade in different NGC holders. Weighted all three and the newer holder seems to be a little heavier than the older two, anyone else notice this?

The ngc white label is the big boy for early slabs . It could have a 50$ coin in it but the slab is worth close to 800$ or more . Just depends on how many coins are in the holder that may still be out there alot have been cracked or regraded .

Dear coingeek, I have a 1911 St. Gaudens $20 coin but in a very specific angle of light it looks like it has fine hairline scratches from a cleaning. It doesnt look "whizzed" but it does look like it was wiped with cloth perhaps. What kind of value should I anticipate? Premium above market bullion value? Or can it have a chance at being graded higher?

NGC needs to fix that. With all the fakes... collectors and dealers should not have to wonder. Also, a picture of the coin in the holder should be standard on all graded/authenticated coins. With the bad guys now using real cert numbers it is a must. Without the picture you still can't be sure which is the point of certification. The idea was that we could buy, sell and trade without the coin in hand and trust that what we are getting is what we (mostly) expected to get. Maybe a topic for further discussion. I've got one of these with an MS Indian cent in it, and I didn't know what I was buying at the time. The slabs are scarce but not super rare, and I doubt if it adds value to my cent. It might help with gold coins as there are far less of those in slabs.
