Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: How to help Africa? Do business there

www.ted.com Negative images of Africa dominate the news: famine and disease, conflict and corruption. But Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the former Finance Minister of Nigeria and now a director of the World Bank, says there's a less-told story unfolding in many African nations: one of reform, economic growth and business opportunity. Cracking down on corruption -- and the perception of corruption -- will be the key to its success. She tells how high-ranking Nigerian officials taking money illicitly have been jailed, and how citizens and prospective business partners are getting at least a partial picture now of where money flows.

I am impressed by her other TED X speech and interviews... I did not know of this great woman before now, when I learned of her new position as head of the world Trade Organization, which has long been known to disrespect Africa. I was inspired. The words and record of Dr. Ngozi are remarkable. This may just be the great change in direction Africa needs to turn the tide, and assure her proper place at the table of those bringing wealth to the world, and not the false illusion of African poverty..

Fools who don't understand anything about economics, nationality and how to sustain a nation. This woman has helped the WTO Rob Africa and she knows it. But for you clowns you don't care what she actually does all you care is that on your mind she is earning big bucks as an individual. She is a puppet used to hurt Africa.

@@rcikaal8804It's unfortunate you think of her like this. NOI is known globally. Her imprint on the global stage is bold n visible enough for all to study. No wonder her overwhelming endorsement by all the WTO member nations. Are you wiser n smarter than all the membernations. Do you have the capacity to invalidate the overwhelming support she has earned from people from everywhere around the world? There're certain positions I will never take in life. One of such is your stand n attitude of negativity in the midst of overwhelming goodwill towards her from others (millions) - and not just others, but folks who know better.

Common sense isnt a common thing and that is why ignorance still thrives especially with people that know nothing about us.Its encouraging to know even though the world is not ready to see it, that the Nigerian people have taken the destiny we share into our hands and are making a head way. Those who hear us sing and hear nusery rhymes miss our songs of survival, those that see the lines in our hands as lines drawn by our idle forefathers miss the beauty in our palmistry. We're one,and are rising

chinnyization, you have brashfully expressed your thoughts (and I dare say without proper reason). I agree with Bladen12345 that your argument is very weak. You obviously have misunderstood Ngozi; she is making a point on the power of foreign direct investment. I am sure that she pointed out that african governments have their failings, but her aim is to illustrate the wisdom of higher FDI as a better means of aiding africa as opposed to 'Charity Aid'.

I like Ngozi, but I stand with chinnyization. Talk is cheap. Before a society talks of growth or properity, certain factors have to be on ground. Security, electricity/energy, water supply, roads/transport. Etc. Nigeria has none. Who wants to invest where he'll be kidnapped? Or set up a headquaters where there's no road, or energy supply? The govt ain't serious. The people just suffer.
