A radio, pfd, a safety whistle, and a wetsuit or dry suit, a seaworthy watercraft. This video is a perfect example of why you want all of those things on the ocean if possible.

The man in the porta boat caused his own problem… He was anchored, and a wave came over the bow, and he failed to cut his anchor, loose and bail his boat out… Now he’s saying Porter boats are not safe they don’t have enough flotation this is wrong Porter boat has plenty of flotation. He needs to learn how to use his ground tackle correctly.

Don't blame the portabote for this one. This is just an instance of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was too close to the breakers and got swamped. A kayak would have flipped there as well. However, not having a VHF radio and knowing how to use it is a big no no. Another is not having a whistle/air horn/flares. I would also stress to everyone that if you hear someone ask for a radio check over the VHF, please take your time to respond.

Blame it on not heeding warnings. Looks like there is a big DANGER sign at the launch ramp highlighting the hazardous area outside the harbor entrance. @@Adventurewithnhia I had to take the Boating Course online since my Kayak was modified with a Minn Kota motor. My Kayak is now considered a boat since it has a motor on it. Therefore, California requires a Boat owner to register my Motorized Kayak with DMV. A registered document of the Kayak will make it legal in California. Then, the owner is required by law to take the Boating Course online. Once the test is passed, then the owner will receive a Boating License. Studying and learning the Boating class is essential for the safety precautions when heading towards the Lake, Ocean, or River for fishing or just having fun. It's a must to learn even if it's just a non-motorized Kayak. Again, great job on the rescue and God bless.

Don’t even sweat it, it’s a great boat! I see it all the time on the water with no issues other than this one time. I even owned one and sold it to a viewer and he’s killing it on ocean fishing with the porta-Bote. Great thing is it floats and you’ll never sink or be in too crazy of a trouble if you bring the right safety gears like radio, whistle, life vest, a hand pump or bucket. It was user error and user fault for getting into that situation in that condition. Every vessel has its limits just don’t go over the limit of that vessel. Don’t worry about it and you’ll be fine, always go on good condition and check your conditions throughout the day. A aluminum boat will sink once water gets in at least these porta Bote floats you’ll just have to do what he did and ditch the engine. Be safe, have fun and enjoy the new Bote

Thank You and Thanks for watching. Fishing in a small vessel in the ocean is very fun and exciting but just make sure to have all your safety gears and even if you go with friends always bring stuff like as if your going solo. Self rescue and learn how to get back on your vessel. Help each other as we all just want to have some fun and eat some fish. The coast guard will not charge you, they are there to save lives and they are pretty awesome group of people. Stay safe and get a vhf radio, whistle, PFD, wetsuit or dry suit, a gps even on a fish finder is great to pin point your location if you don’t know where or even in the fog. I really didn’t want to do extra work going into the danger zone but had to find out why someone would yell so weirdly in a known as a no boat zone. Glad he made it home. I used to think the same before I even thought of going into the ocean. But over the years you pick and choose the better days, calmer days, and what aren’t worth your life days. California coast is sometimes unpredictable with fog with forecast always changing. But with the right safety gears and making sure you have them on the vessel makes it easier or more comfortable going out in the ocean. Every year we hear kayakers flipping and can’t get in, kayakers lost their kayak, and kayakers getting blown off but with the right gears you can call for help. @@Adventurewithnhia I'd be worried about what lurks beneath while you wait for the CG or other rescue organizations. The Port-Bote guy's situation was safer due to not being open to the deep from below. He at least could stay inside if the submerged craft. They will never sink completely.

I had a 14ft Porta Bote, clean looking boat and pretty cool, it can’t sink! Just a bit heavy on land and car top is a pain. But yeah amazing vessel especially a foldable boat, sold it to a guy in the Bay Area. I think it’s pretty rare to see sharks, I’ve been ocean kayak fishing for about 10 years and it’s been pretty safe from sharks. The sea lions are more annoying. nhiavangfoto It was very slow in HMB yesterday, I got 2 bites one was a smelt and the other probably 5-7# salmon. I was fighting him for 3-4 minutes and I kept the pressure on him by peddling fast and reeling my line, but he started to come towards my rudder line so I started to reel in my rudder line fast and that’s when he came off. It was a fun experience. No one caught a salmon yesterday in HMB, no birds dropping, no whales, no bait balls but I saw a seal follow me and black and white dolphin 🐬 jump near the entrance of the jetty. It was super warm so maybe that is why no salmon in HMB.

I have an eight footer, and it will not stick. It will fill to the rub line even with my motor on back, but has never went under. Problem with the boat when it’s filled that much. very find balancing act to bailed out. For safety, I would recommend rubber bumpers under the seats I use old ones.

I have a 14 footer Porta Bote I sold to a viewer, it’s a great boat and won’t sink as long as you have all the factory foams still attached to the walls. But this guy went into a no go zone in half moon bay and two big sets of high swell wave’s crashed over his Porta Bote thus filled up with water. Bring a pimp and someway to lift the rim of the boat above water would help, but when I got to him all his stuff was all over the water and by the jetty. I was about to recommend some sort of tubes with co2 attachment around the rim and use it to get it a little above water to start dumping water out. I heard he bought a kayak after his boat sank.

The guy from what I heard he went and bought himself a kayak after that sinking in the ocean. Kayak don’t sink if taken on water but if you take a hand pump you should be good on a kayak, I take my pump on every trip just in case myself or others might need to get water out.

A little late to the party but always interested to watch a video re safety and a rescue. Great job first of all being alert enough to hear the man's pleas for help! You did the right things by assisting and radioing for help. And I'm sure since this happened you probably now know what you could've done better: When you were paddling towards him, the moment you first realized he was in distress, you should of got on channel 16 and said "may day may day, one person in a green boat is sinking 70 feet south of the half moon bay jetty." Repeat that phrase over and over until coast guard responds. Other tips: look up calling coast guard on vhf and practice. By practicing, you will be calmer when a situation arises. Even if that guy's boat was only 1/2 filled, and he says he doesn't need coast guards help but he can't bring his boat in, I would call coast guard on channel 16 and report it. Even if it's not a distress call, coast guard is very understanding. You're just alerting them of a possible situation and where it is occurring so they already aware and on standby. Know exactly where you are and landmarks surrounding you so you can give coast guard a more precise location. Again, great job and enjoy your vids.

Thanks man! Yeah I watched many videos before buying a vhf radio and of how to use it, but when in real life situations and I’m in aawww like is this actually really happening? I switched to emergency button (red channel 16) but forget it was on lock mode on channel 69. Had to unlock the channel. I had to see if he was ok first and yeah even he was asking if I could drag him back in which I couldn’t. It’s one of those thing where you can prepared as much as you can and study but once it actually happens you forget how to do or act and try to do the best you can with the situation. I learned a lot just from this situation and I’m pretty sure he did too. Safety gears, knowledge and knowing how to get rescued or self rescue. I’m glad our fish finder these days has GPS and coordinates for a accurate location if ever out far beyond the landmarks. Hahaha I used to be like I watched enough videos and know exactly what to do if I was ever in that situation. Thanks for watching and comment. I’m just glad he’s safe and got to go home and fish another day.

Nice video. I have had a porta bote for years and i am very pleased with it! I am jyst curious, did you find out why his bote sank? They seem pretty unsinkable? I have seen videos of people dropping porta botes from 40 feet down into the ground and they did not break. Did he have a big engibe and slammed into something?
@Adventurewithnhia
@Adventurewithnhia 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah the Porta Bote is pretty much unsinkable but he went out during the thick fog with no gps and found himself in the no boat zone. Halfmoon bay has a reef or rock that pops out the water during low tide and when in high tide it’s dangerous enough to flip/sink boats. Swells were somewhat bad and for that rock area it’s really bad so he ate the waves head on and the second wave took him under. No gps to let him know he’s in the danger area. It’s not the boat but the person going beyond what the boat was capable of. He said waves was big as a house.

@@Adventurewithnhia yes i figured! I have been out in pretty rough waters in the sea. Not a pleasent experience. Water flooded in over the bow when going against the waves. @Adventurewithnhia
@Adventurewithnhia Жыл бұрын
From what he said was that the front rope was for dragging his boat at the dock and if by shore, I even asked him and it’s not a anchor rope. Ocean guys usually use drift socks. It was just a bad condition day and he went to a zone that everyone avoids and he said a set of waves sizes of a house rolled in, he made the first wave but the second landed ontop of the boat capsizing the Porta Bote. If he had gps and avoided that area he would of been fine, but fog and no gps he was pretty much lost in the conditions. Porta Bote went down due to all his gears, he had to ditch everything even his motor to stay a float. Be safe and carry self rescue gears and gps to know where your at or if call coast guards they can know your location to save you. It weird I still remember this day very clearly.

@nhiavangfoto i own a pb and it is interesting to me to figure out circumstances. I understood that he got the bote completely filled with water, but why on earth did he not cut the rope? Pb would still float while completely filled. It would also be possible to actually attempt to bail the water out. 3 hours is a long time to try something. Looks like no fault of the boat.

how did the porta boat sink ? did he smash into something ? I thought portaboats wont sink and they do very well on the waves and swells. What happened here ?
@Adventurewithnhia
@Adventurewithnhia 4 жыл бұрын
Meril Mathew from what I heard by his friend is in the fog he drifted or went over King Rock. King Rock is a reef that is about 20ft depending on the tide and the water around it is in its 60-70ft deep so with a random swells like on this day a 5ft swell in 60ft is cake but over that reef can be over 10ft crashing waves scary. He went into the crashing waves and took on water enough to sink, if it wasn’t for his fast thinking of ditching the motor I think it would of been really bad. Lucky the foam on the boat kept him up enough above water. It’s like everything it’s not the vessel but the operator/captain, know what you can handle and where you are. Simple mistake that could of turned really bad.

I try to tell people about the same safety gears like you said and I tell people get a wetsuit or dry suit in case you fall in so you don’t get hypothermia or sting be jellyfish but people don’t listen. People go out in waders and that’s so sketchy. I can’t imagine what you hear and know of the amount of people need saving or life lost. Always safety first.
