The 2024 NHL Draft Lottery will be held on May 7 at NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey (TBA; ESPN, SN, TVAS).
Macklin Celebrini, the projected No. 1 pick, remained undecided on where he will play next season when his freshman season with Boston University came to an end in a 2-1 overtime loss to the eventual NCAA national champion University of Denver at the Frozen Four semifinals on April 11.
"I mean, I wasn't really planning on losing," Celebrini said at the time. "So, I mean, I’ve got to figure that out. Kind of still in shock, so I'm not too sure."
The lottery will set the order for the first 16 picks for the clubs that failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The 2024 draft will reportedly be held at Sphere in Las Vegas. The first round will be held June 28, with rounds 2-7 on June 29.
There will be two lottery drawings, one for the No. 1 pick and one for the No. 2 selection.
Teams only can move up 10 selections if it wins one of the draws. Only the top 11 teams in the lottery are eligible to receive the No. 1 pick.
Once the two top picks have been established, the remaining teams will be assigned Nos. 3-16 based on inverse order of the final regular-season standings.
The San Jose Sharks, who finished last in the NHL standings (19-54-9), will have the best odds of winning the No. 1 pick at 18.5 percent.
The Chicago Blackhawks, who were 31st in the standings (23-53-6), will have the second-best odds at 13.5 percent, followed by the Anaheim Ducks (27-50-5) at 11.5 percent.
Chicago won the draft lottery last season and selected center Connor Bedard with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old led all rookies this season with 61 points (22 goals, 39 assists) in 68 games.
Celebrini turns 18 on June 13.

What’s so unusual about that 🤷🏻‍♂️? Chicago is actually closer to the bottom this year than they were last year. It would be awesome for an Original Six team not named the Maple Laffs get Celebrini. It would be poetic justice too. 2006 & 2007, Chicago got Toews and Kane, and didn’t look back. Getting Celebrini to team up with Bedard will guarantee Chicago a Stanley Cup by 2026-27 the earliest. Even though Macklin Celebrini is from British Columbia, Canada, he was also raised in San Jose, California and was a member of the Jr. Sharks. This would not only be big for the Sharks to land a top prospect but, on a more personal level, a "come full circle" type of story (with Celebrini).

This Canuck fan has high respects for the San Jose franchise. Right from the launch of the franchise the fans showed up and filled the arena. The logo and colors were an instant smash around the league and remains one of the best. Bettman better not interfere with the Sharks drafting Macklin Celebrini, last year and those Ranger picks have red flags all over it imo! Go Sharks!

Right on comment Brodie, and though we may wish Sharks good luck in getting #1 pick, there is almost 75% chance they will not get it due to odds. They will add a really good player in any case if their scouts guide them well even if it is #3. May 7 will give us a concrete sign whether or not Sharks have turned their luck around. Fans want to be part of playoffs and see more hockey, losing for the future (better draft picks) is for the birds, not the Sharks! Any rumors about short lists for the new head coach? Sharks are bringing in more new faces which will be interesting to witness in action in October games. In the Chinese calendar, it is the Year of the Dragon which means prosperity and successful life, but could also point to Seattle Kraken winning the #1 pick as dragons from the sea. Luck is actually a very wondrous aspect of our lives, not to be ignored. I agree with Jim Morrison that you cannot petition the hockey gods with prayer and we are simply stuck with whatever happens to those random lottery balls used by NHL officials on May 7.

Although the Sharks have the best chance of any team for the #1 pick, the fact that teams can only drop two spots means our odds of picking -- per Tankathon -- are actually: #1: 25.5% #2: 18.8% #3: 55.7% With that said, the players who will be available at 2nd or 3rd overall are still very, very good: forwards Ivan Demidov (the KHL's SKA St. Petersburg) and Cayden Lindstrom (the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers) and defenseman Artyom Levshunov (Michigan State).

This draft is very defencemen-heavy and since we don’t have a real, true elite d-man prospect, losing out on Celebrini wouldn’t be the worst thing. I’d be more than happy with Levshunov or even drafting down to take Buium and getting an additional pick and/or prospect in return for the 2nd/3rd pick.

@@XaviRonaldo0 Well that’s false. He performed worse than Eichel at the same age and at the same college. He’s also 2 inches shorter and 15 pounds lighter than Eichel. He’ll be similar to Eichel, maybe a bit better if he can stay healthy, but no where close to Bedard.

I do have a couple of questions about the lottery rules because the phrasing isn't particularly clear. A team can only win the lottery twice in five years. If Team A finishes in last place and then Team B at pick 12 wins the lottery moving up to 2, does that count as one of the wins for the Team A? Second scenario, let's say next season Vegas wins the lottery. Since the Sharks own the Vegas pick does that count as a Vegas win or a Sharks win? Could the Sharks theoretically pick 1,2, and 3 next year if Pittsburgh wins the lottery this year, defers their pick to 2025, Vegas finishes 13th to the bottom next year and wins the first lottery, Pittsburgh finishes bottom 12 and wins the 2nd lottery, and Sharks finish last again next year?

Last year a dude had a big stack of cards that he revealed in order of the draft. I believe it was a countdown for those in the lottery down to number 4 and then jumped to first overall, followed by second and third. They seemingly change it every year just like the draft rules.

Calgary, the only team I really care about has never drafted higher than 4th overall when they drafted Sam Bennett (now in FLA) in 2014. They are projecting to be 9th overall in this draft ...no lottery benefit. A lot of mock drafts have them taking Carter Yakemchuk, an RD from the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. As long as it doesn't have that "rigged" feel and a certain, unnamed team gets it AGAIN. The chances Calgary gets the #1 pick sit at 5% and 64.4% that they stay at #9. That unnamed team has a 13.5% chance...and I desperately want them to fall down in the draft, even to 4th (41.7%) would make me happy enough. I would be happy if CGY takes Yakemchuk, but would be ecstatic if they took F Tij Iginla from the Kelowna Rockets...two generations of Iginla in the Flaming C.

maybe in future award #1 draft pick to 17th place team, then #2 draft pick to 18th place team, and on down the line to 32nd place team drafting 16th; teams will be rewarded for best performance outside playoffs, and for trying to make playoffs? then 17th pick goes to 16th place team, up to first place team getting 32nd pick; as is done currently for teams making playoffs?

The rebuild had to happen and clearing out bad contracts was first on the list. If he can get rid of Vlasic, he'll have a clean slate to build the team he wants. Outside of the fact the NHL veterans and stars are outstanding players that thrive in any environment and some led the Sharks to the Stanley Cup finals. The fact is that the DEI hire is a narcissist that simply wants to make the team in his own. So, he completely dismantles a good team and populates it with mediocre talent other NHL GMs were able to offload to an inexperienced and unqualified buffoon. The term 'rebuild' is simply a euphemism for a bad team. Having a guy who can pirouette does not make him the second coming of McDavid. Grier has ensured the Sharks will be a horrible team for many, many years to come. But people like you, clueless when it comes to hockey but get excited when a pundit fools you into thinking this a good development for the franchise. I can only imagine how excited you will be when in six of seven years if the Sharks make it to the playoffs (for the first time in over a decade) to exit in the first round. You will consider that a success!

If a team gets a #1 pick one year, they should be ineligible to get it the next. They can have #2 onward but not another #1 for at least 1 if not 2 drafts!
