This is what happens when you pay players for what they’re projected to be, not what they’ve done. Example is the Kings. Doughty, Kopitar and Quick got paid after the cups. Some might say it cap strapped the team as their play declined, but who’s to say they would have even been motivated to win those cups if they already secured the bag for regular season success/projected post season success

I might be wrong for this, but I genuinely feel like Jon Cooper strategically tells his players to pump the breaks during the regular season once they know they are in a playoff spot. They did this EXACT same thing last season, where they looked pretty bad in the final stretch, and then once playoffs come, they just look like a completely different team. This year is no exception. These guys played one of the best games I've seen of them all season long. It's absolutely incredibly what this Tampa team is capable of. Idc yeah Boston is great, but Tampa just flips that playoff switch, and they play harder, faster, and better than everybody else.

Basically It looked like it last year, but it was more concerning this year with the losses and less depth Hopefully they will be back on top and expose everyone as frauds (Avalanche) or not ready for prime time (Drury's Rangers) Bruins are overrated and probably would fall apart in actual overtime, it's the same roster as always

Cooper beat Keefe 100-0 in the first period. I mean what a show, it was like a play where whole Toronto team was just actors. Those line changes in the opening minutes, two goals from high turnovers and Kucherov is just a special weapon.

В конце регулярки складывалось впечатление, что Тампа просто бросила играть, потому та активность, которую они показали именно в виде давления на ворота, в этом матче - была ожидаема. Эффективность их академического розыгрывания шайбы известна всем, а дополнительный эффект от прессинга - это именно про плей-офф! Главное при эмоциональных всплесках хранить порядок и дисциплину!

The Leafs were saying that they really "looked forward" to playing the Lightning in the first round. I can't understand why that would be. The Lightning has been to the Stanley Cup finals for three straight years (winning twice) so are very seasoned/experienced in how to prepare/play in playoff situations. I don't care if they aren't the same team anymore. Their coaching staff is and knows how to prepare the talent they have. This is now a completely different situation (not the regular season). The Leafs have nothing but 1st round exits as playoff experience, not anything near what the Lightning have Now the Lightning has essentially taken away home-ice advantage from the Leafs. That's all the Lightning wanted to go into Toronto--to win at least one game which they just did and quite decisively at that.

Anybody who thought they were going to go far in the playoffs is the one "wasting their time" watching this sad sack bunch of annual losers. In fact, they only beat Tampa Bay because the Lightning's two best defensemen were out with injury and even then the Leafs barely beat them LOL. The Leafs aren't a team they're a bunch of overpaid players who play for themselves and not as a team. ($40 million alone to Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and Tavares no less) Now will begin the rebuild AGAIN LOL. As for you, I'd hurry....I heard Tavares needs a caddy next week when he plays golf

It honestly baffles me how people year after year pick the leafs to win in the first round. It's the same thing year after year yet people still get fooled by their regular season success. Samsonov nor Murray will take them anywhere and goaltending is the most important factor in the playoffs.

The Lightning have an amazing ability to rapidly pass the puck back and forth, getting the other team's goalie scrambling back and forth until the net is wide open for a shot. The Leafs have an amazing ability to pass the puck directly to a Lightning player.

This game really upsets me because everyone is blowing up on Samsonov, but when you see the highlights, he was _literally_ hung out to dry. Major penalty. 5 on 3. And every time they score on him, is because the defence doesn't do _nearly_ enough to shut down shooting lanes. He really tried, unlike most of the team. This was so bad that I literally changed my bracket from Leafs to Tampa. My two concerns going into this was confidence and coaching. I was _pissed_ they didn't pick up Bruce Boudreau when he was _criminally_ let go the way he was from Vancouver. I wonder how different this would be if he was there. And now my concerns are completely validated in one single game. I don't care what their results are after this game. Unless they win the series, I have very little faith in their ability to bounce back from this, even if it ends up being a Game 7.

Agreed. Keefe is dumb though and will put Woll in next game. He will destroy Samsonovs confidence even though this loss was far from his fault, instead of saying “this isn’t on you” he will sit him, destroy his confidence, we leave Woll out to dry as well and lose in 4-5 games.

They never really addressed their goaltending needs; Samsonov is a mere gamble. You need world-class proven goaltending to win a cup. Also, they've never put a sound defensive system in place and committed to it. What they have is lip service defense; they haven't the right players to do it. Poindexter with the glasses never really abandoned his offense only theory even if he says he has. I hope Poindexter finally gets a free ticket out of town at the end of the season so I can wave bye bye. This from a fan who attended a Leafs Stanley Cup parade when they had real defense and goaltending. PS I'm still hoping for a miracle!

@@leeham6230 it’s a comeback for experienced teams like Tampa. Toronto is not that type of team. They get scared during playoffs. Their skill’s disappears for some reason.

My dad met and Married my mom, in Toronto Dad was A die hard LEAFS fan..moving to Vancouver in 1970 No one rooted for expansion teams. Me and my brother were born in Vancouver..My brother was A leafs fan my dad made sure of that..If the leafs had won a game in our house growing up as a kid, that was the perfect time to ask dad for slurpee money...if the leafs lost..stay out of the living room...Heres to you DAD Love always!

The Leafs being ... the Leafs. Its that time of the year I guess, the golf green beckons. Utterly no grit on the Leafs team. This is a team built for the season to draw the crowds and generate revenue. Come playoff time the competitiveness disappears; Marner, Tavares and Matthews become invisible.

Marner was bad, Tavares is slow anyways and Mathews did just ok. Defence was terrible! Rielly sucked and so did Holl and Giordano.

@@handzus19 Lol.. Marner played like he was afraid, once again, just like last year .. He got points because of Mathews and a touch on a PP goal. So aside from those puck touches he played terrible.

Oh, really. Invisible? Marner got points on all three goals last night, Matthews had two and Tavares had one. Defence and penalties were the real problems last night!

As a Lightning fan, I were a Leafs fan, I would go drink a glass of water and not hit the panic button yet. Knies hasn't even played, it's game 1 of at least 4, and the Lightning just had more high danger chances this game. Dig in for game 2 and prepare for a battle. Terrible discipline didn't help at all (15 PIMS compared to Tampa's 8 is not a battle you want to lose). This should be a hell of a series.

The problem with Toronto Maple Leafs is the lack of management experience. Why would a club like this get an amateur general manager like Kyle Dubas? This was their biggest mistake. The team needs a good shake up, all of them are overpaid lack of enthusiasm. Too complacent…prune the dead branches. It is unbelievable that a rich team like this can barely make playoff series for so many years.

Yes, defence (which includes goalie) was the weak point for the Leafs last night. But the Leafs blew out the Bolts in the first game last year, and that didn't decide the series.

Samsonov did a piss job in the net. Marner was passing to ghost and didn't seem to care about the game. It seems in the finals that the coach has a hard time keeping the spirits of his players. Maybe he is a season coach and not so much one for the series. Just saying.
