The problem is, it doesn't matter who pushes whom like that - that's a major safety issue in ice arenas. They nail players for pushing people like that - because of the risk. Back in the day, they'll even arrest or nail fans that put players safety at risk. A fan wouldn't be able to get away with this. How many times have we seen boarding, plexiglass, Zamboni door & turnbuckle tragedies? When you see refs breaking up fights, they're working very hard to keep everyone standing up - so no one falls down and smashes their head - look carefully. It's all about keeping everyone balanced - they allowed them to throw fists, but they will not allow them to fall down and bounce their heads off of ice, boards, turnbuckles.. their job, when it comes to physical force, is to break up fights while keeping them safe Refs are specifically trained how to balance on the ice, keep everybody up and safe. Officials across all sports will probably be replaced with technology at some point. Not sure how far away we are from that happening, but it’s coming.
