Last year I took a journey by boat to the Irish island of Arranmore, to attend an unaccompanied singing festival organised by the Mac Gloinn family (Ye Vagabonds & Fam) called Féile Róise Rua. There were so many great singers, and I have lots of footage to show for most of them but the biggest surprise was a woman by the name of Niamh Bury. I'm not even sure she was there officially. It was night, and a day of events had ended. A few of us were hanging outside Neily's pub, pints in hand. Neily's is right on the pier, so it's beautiful all together. We sat on a wall, sea air, pints, friendly people everywhere, all sharing one thing in common, a love for songs and singing (and pints). Niamh here came up in my suggested youtube algorithm based suggestions. I thank my Dad who can't use the internet for that and turning me on to music like George Jones, and Luke Kelly, and Paul Simon and even a bit of Bruce Springsteen. Nevermind a bit of Suo Gan. 20 years later here I am .Beautiful song and video. Proper treat.

Very lovely singing and gently pleasing guitar : I liked the fiddle-playing too. The scene-setting and the assembled patchwork of life around during the performance - both were beautifully filmed. Thank you all.

Oh WOW! Soooo beautiful! Niamh has a captivating voice and I absolutely love the sounds of the park murmuring away so quietly in the background. Gorgeous all round!

I have been looking for that singer for yeaars !! I had heard her cover of Dirty old town in an H&M add a while ago and way absolutely obsessed, but I cannot find this song anywhere. So happy to hear her sing again !!

I remember Mary Black had a song very similar back in the day . Great to hear songs been resung and remembered by such a great Singer . Keep singing you've got it . Would have loved to be on that session 👍

Presumably he dumped the narrator, having changed his mind about the whole 'marriage' thing, I don't think there's any clearer version than raw doubt and sorrow. When you're deeply in love with someone and can't work out how to keep them, kind of thing.

We don't know that he wasn't press-ganged into the British Royal Navy for so many years that by the time he finally made it back she was wed and with children by another man. We don't know that her jealous family secretly removed her to another county of Ireland without his knowledge and lost contact forever. We don't know that he was not slain in a skirmish with a band of drunken scoundrels of the streets by night. We don't know that he was not taken by the fever a cold winters night. We don't know that he didn't lose his fortune in gambling and set off to the New World to try his fortune of making it back, so that the maidens father would agree to her marriage, yet lost his way in the hardships of life. We don't know that he wasn't a freedom fighter and was betrayed by his own neighbour to be hung on the gallows. We do not know. But it makes for a mighty fine song of the heart. Does it not?
