Hey guys! For some reason it feel like its been a while since I've uploaded. But anyway, I've finally unboxed my holbein paint and I also made a palette out of it along with swatches n things. Overall the whole process took me around 3 hours with drying time in between. And I've tried to cut as much as possible but it still turn out to be quite a long one... I hope you guys don't mind.
I love how the paint feels, the most noticeable thing is on how it activates so easily compared to student grade paint. And it retains it's rich consistency as if it's freshly squeezed out of the tube which I find quite amazing. Can't wait to paint more with this :D
Oh and by the way, as I have mentioned, I just published a skillshare class on how to paint galaxy fox, so if you're interested here's a link my latest class:

To me personally, I fell in love with Sakura Koi's Prussian Blue. It's a bit granulating but that's why I love the texture and color. I will ran out of my Koi really soon and I've been looking for a replacement of that particular color, so I watched this video to see Holbein's Prussian Blue. But I guess I haven't find that replacement yet
@Nianiani
@Nianiani 5 жыл бұрын
I love the prussian blue in holbein because it's less granulating than the koi xD because the colour is similar, but richer. I'm nt sure what would be a good brand to replace the koi's Prussian blue, if the granulation is what you're looking for... sorry :(

I got it at a local onlineshop. Halfpans differ slightly in the measurement, as different brands has different plastic thickness. So after measuring, I looked for a case (doesnt have to be a pencilcase) that has good measurement. As an example, if the length of the pan is 2cm, I want the size to be in multiples of 2cm and so on. Hope this helps :)

lovely paints. Make sure you take time to check the lightfastness if these as you would not want to sell or gift a painting that had pigments with poor lightfast ratings such as the opera which is fugitive. Opera even changes when displayed behind glass with uv protection, and this is true of all colors that use the bright florescent pigments, but many artists enjoy using them for work reproduced as prints and in graphic design work. For a bright transparent pink with excellent lightfastness you may want to try Quinacridone Rose by Daniel Smith which you can buy as a single poured half pan from some of the sellers on etsy. I love your beautiful delicate painting, thanks so much for sharing your talent with us.
@Nianiani
@Nianiani 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for the info. I don't really check the lightfast of paints because I never sell originals. But that's interesting! the quin opera looks so nice and transparent, but tht's a shame that it doesnt stand light very well :/

@farmwife7944 5 жыл бұрын
Nianiani Your work is lovely. If you don't feel comfortable selling them, consider giving some as gifts. Seriously, they are that good. To add to your palette, check out the etsy sellers because you may find that shipping to your area is quite reasonable depending on the location of the seller.

I used to have a redbubble and society6 account, but I ended up deleting them, since it caused some problems with my paypal :/ so I don't sell prints anymore. Unless I have a huge demand, thn I'll start thinking about opening the shop again... tht's also why I mostly paint on my sketchbook so I can just have a collection of them, without taking too much space xD

Would you say that for a hobbyist that has never really brought artist grade watercolor before, and wants a good investment in high quality paint to buy Holbein? I know most of your videos you use Holbein and all of you work is stunning! I don't think I have even brought student grade paints, maybe the very low end ones. One of the art stores I'll visit has the 12 tubes 5ml set for $24, and I think because it's so highly pigmented, the set will last me 2 years ish. Might be longer because I'd be too careful using it haha.
@Nianiani
@Nianiani 2 жыл бұрын
most of the student grade paints that I've been using lasted more than 2 years. It depends how much you dig into the paint and how often you paint I guess :) but if it's not within your budget, you don't have to worry about the grade of paint too much. The paint shouldn't stop you from painting, infact sometimes I still use my pentel watercolours as well, and they work just fine :) I'd say invest in the paper more than the paint, because the paper effect the painting more than the paint most of the time :))
@Nianiani
@Nianiani 2 жыл бұрын
But yes, I enjoy using holbein, but I've tried other brands as well and they're also nice to use! But it's always best to have a good base of 1 brand so you have something to compare to :)

@@Nianiani I think I’ll be getting quite nice paper, I’m debating between Strathmore 500 and Fabriano Studio fat pad. Although one is 100% cotton while the other is 25% cotton. Maybe I should start at the 25% paper first since I never tried this type before. 2 pads of Strathmore 500 is 50 sheets ($20 in total) where I can use on both sides, and is 100% cotton. However Fabriano is 60 sheets for $20, slightly bigger in size, and is only 25% cotton. So many choices and I want to get the best for my money, but am overwhelmed…

Can I ask why you do layers of the paint instead of just filling them up once and smoothing out then while wet?
@Nianiani
@Nianiani 5 жыл бұрын
Theres no right way of doing it, but to me, I find that I can get to the bottom of the pan easier without leaving air bubbles, but I think it's still possible to do it in one go,. Either way I'd have to do a second layer because the paint will shrink as it dries. This was my first time compiling the palette, so it was also a new experience for me :)

May I ask why you refer to the palettes as a warm and a cool palette? You probably know that there are warm and cold versions from all colours?
@Nianiani
@Nianiani 2 жыл бұрын
Warm colours are generally yellows oranges, pinks and reds. Cool colours are the other half of the colour wheel like blues, purples, greens and so on. I just divide them into simple warm and cool tones. But of course each hue also has a cool and a warm version of the colour. But that would be too complex to divide up I think..
