Got my first hifi setup in 1974. A Pioneer SX-434 receiver, BIC 920 turntable and KLH model 31 speakers. All for under $250. I see it's not all high end stuff in your video but I could spend hours looking through that inventory. What a treat.

Neil Spector for real. My dad had the Marantz receiver with “quadrophonic sound”. If I remember right that meant 8 channels. The “A” section with L&R and L&R, the “B” section with same. Just the touch, the feel, oozed quality. Does anyone remember touching the tuner dial? It was a horizontal dial that had a silky smooth action where if you gave it a good flick it would glide like butter across the RF spectrum. Butter. Did I say butter? Butter. Every dial felt like a Mercedes as opposed to a Chevy. Back when quality ruled over empty flash. Marantz.

This was Oshawa Stereo Sound in Oshawa Ontario Canada, the owner's name was Julius, he passed away at the age 82 about 10 years ago with all the inventory unsold. I have been there a few times, was a surreal experience, it was a joke actually. The JVC XL-Z1010 CD player (the one he holds in the video) was a Stereophile class A recommend comment and a giant killer in the day, it sold for around a grand in the late 80's, he still wanted list price for everything, and of course nobody bought very much. His family liquidated for pennies on the dollar when he died. A forum post from Canuck Audiomart talks about it BIT. ..... "Mike the fellas' name is Julius. He is in his early 80's. The store is Oshawa Stereo Sound and is on Taunton Road in Oshawa. Julius has been around since the late 70's I believe. The fella who started Whitby Audio (Dave Johann) got his start in audio working for Julius way back when. I have bought a bunch of stuff from Julius over the years. People have been trying to buy Julius' inventory for over a decade now but he's declined. A few years ago I approached Julius knowing that he was interested in selling off his inventory. His price back then was "$1Million for everything" including his parts collection, a massive amount of obsolete trade-in gear, and a warehouse full of gear in storage next to his storefront. Most of his stuff is NIB product from the 80's and 90's. He's got a ton of JVC's superdigifine series. Julius' prices are typically MSRP and he's not much into dealing."
@vintagestereos
@vintagestereos 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is true from what I know. I spent 5 days a week in there for 8 months selling stuff for him. It was a surreal experience. He not only wanted full list price, but amortized the value year by year. We sold new in the box nakamichi tape decks to a guy in texas for thousands of dollars. Then he bought more! He bought $12, 000 total worth of Nakamichi units, and the way Julius priced things that was only 3 units. I really got to know Julius over that time and miss talking with him. He had seen a LOT in his life, and had fascinating tales. He was a great man.

That was a very cool video with lots of great vintage gear and paraphernalia, but now I'm kind of interested in the story behind this? Why was all this valuable audio equipment just sitting around in a warehouse unsold for so many decades, and did the guy giving the tour ever explain the background? How do you even sell that huge mass of valuable, vintage equipment and get anywhere close to what's it's worth?

What do you want with low power, low dampening distorting 50s 60s tube amps? There are plenty reasons why the superior silicon took the lead.
@dom3827
@dom3827 5 жыл бұрын
@George Miller yea. But not because they are superior. Because some people subjectively have the taste of liking the sound of tubes. Because tubes distort, which makes this warm sound. A tube is completely unlinear and even with circuitry to prevent that it is far away from a perfectly linear silicon. With this linearity you have all capabilitys to change the sound to your likings. Also you need to stick to like 10 Watts speakers with extremely light membrane and wont ever get a too good bass response because of damping factors under 10

@@dom3827 You should listen to a good tube amp driving a Klipschorn speaker. 10 Watts will either have the neighbors calling the police, or running to your house to join the party. 10 watts will drive those puppys over 120db. And sound damn sweet at the same time. It doesnt have to always be about whats "superior" or 'Linear". And the bass from those 15" woofers will blow "her clothes off". Sometimes its just about the music. Peace out.

All I always purchased is vintage, ran into some issues and had to sell many stuff, but my sound system went into storage, went and go it out moved back to PA, and a neighbor goes like, dude can you get this radio that is on my way and I don't understand anything about it, he get fed up with it, when I went to check "the radio" It was a Onkyo TX-DS797, that's the creme of onkyo vintage, it was complete with huge speakers and all its parts, all it needed was coaxial sound wires and that's it, I had a pair inside a box of sound stuff, a bit of bad side was that I couldn't resist to put it together and didn't realize the value was in 80 and it make the walls vibrate at 3am, I'll be expecting the dirty looks 👀. LMAO, it has so many settings 😂😆😁. Excellent piece of equipment, and free 😂..

3 or 4 summers ago,a guy had an "estate" sale at a house 4 blocks from me. The whole inside of that house(every room),the party shed in back yard and even his garden shed were stacked to the ceiling with '70's audio gear.There were two vans in the driveway that were also jammed full.The two vans never moved for 20 years or more.I managed to buy a couple things but fortunately was a little short on cash.(whew).TEAC A-6300-$35.00, TANDBERG 10XD-$20.00,and tons more. I haven't seen him in a while(he finally sold house) We've dealt back and forth 4 or 5 times and I'm glad I got to know him.I'm known to have far too much crap but I've only seen any thing like that that one time...WOW!!!

there's an old audio guy that started collecting when he was a teenager living in Vancouver BC,,he has a couple of warehouses completely packed..but won't sell anything..he 's turned into a real hoarder, man, he's has so much tube equipment, vintage high-end reel to reel's, turntables.......my friend has been there a few times, only because the old guy is a friend of the family....maybe some day is all we can wish!

So 5 years on has this stock been sold, scrapped or still there? It's not worth anything if it's not being sold! For all those saying it's just low end junk I think I'd rather see the newbies who are getting into vinyl use this rather than certain suitcase style turntables!

Pretty cool, but 90 percent of this stuff is low- to mid-fi doorstop material. Whoever invested in this will be hard-pressed to make a profit unless they inherited it.

You should slow down the video and look closer. True there was plenty of mid-fi there. But I saw lots of reel to reels, and top of the line Sansui and Nakamichi. Even the top of the line Pioneer is pretty good. (which there is quit a lot there in addition to the so-so mid-fi) There are lots of gold nuggets there. You just had to dig thorough all the crap JVC stuff and dvd players. One example is the several boxes of Nakamichi Dragon cassette players. You can tell me they are crap all day long but they sell for $1500 to $3000 EACH all day long in nice used condition. And to get one NEW in the BOX? Jesus... I dont know. $5000? And he didnt have one or two.. He had stacks of them...

n0tyham What's shady about this? I'm not even selling it. Of course the DVD players weren't from the 70s, neither were a lot of the newer receivers, tapes decks and other stuff but for the love of god look at all the cool vintage stuff that IS there!

A lot of good stuffs. Almost 50 years of vintage hifi changes bring back a lot of memories. Probably those born around 60s to 70s will have a lot of fond memories. Why don't have a grand sales for some of those stuffs ? Have a museum built for these stuffs ! I am sure many people will get to enjoy to listen to these stuffs. Charge the visitors and it will be able to self sustain and maintain its operation. Meantime, enjoy!

@@odincoulombe706 True some of the equipment was just so-so. But I did see quite a bit of Nakamichi, Sansui, and top of the line Pioneer. THAT stuff is pure gold today. The dvd players are crap obviously but the rest of it isnt too shabby. Plus I saw several reel to reel boxes and some very nice turntables.. Any one who thinks this stuff sounds like crap had never really listened to it. It sounds a thousand times better than fkn Itunes on POS phone like most young people listen to today. It blows my mind how some people think good audio comes from a phone with a set of Beats headphones. Now THAT is shit audio...
