Recently tried cycling for the first time in years during a trip to Bristol, I'm now seriously considering buying a bike. This series, along with your Nice Driving, really helps me gain confidence and is inspiring me to start cycling again, much more than the few "I've got priority" dashcammers and Twitter users, who make events out of nothing. Thank you for featuring many of my clips in this video. As a Deliveroo cyclist I’m trying to show that we’re not all bad and that we can show good examples of how to ride on the roads and that we’re not all in a rush. I always shake my head at other cyclists that go around with no lights or going through red lights, I even on occasions tell some cyclists that they should get some lights when I see them going around on the roads at nighttime. It gives us good cyclists a bad name.

Thank you so much. We need more people like you. I spend most of my time driving (plus I'm a "white van driver") but also cycle for every day utilitarian and commuting as much as possible and there is so much bad, aggressive, entitled and just plain stupid behaviour out there from all drivers and riders. It's the attitude, not the vehicle. But lights on bikes and signalling and communicating your intentions on a bike or scooter are in short supply. I'm not perfect on the roads on two, four or more wheels but heaven help me, the numbers of near misses I've had in every context from cars and cyclists is ridiculous! 🤦‍♂️

Thanks for using my clips here. If feels very nice to be told by a professional that I can be a good example. I also like your last clip with the cyclist trying to help by adjusting speed. I kinda recognized myself in it a bit. Because I ride the same route to work every day I have a chance to slowly do small modifications to how I approach any particular section. On one busier one I have started this summer to not just go through as fast as I can. It is about 2km strech of bad surface and enough cars to more often have them from both directions than not so the ones behind me have to wait with overtaking. Normally I hate wasting energy in brakes unless I have to. But I found that the following is actually quite good: when there is car(s) behind me waiting and a break in the oncoming ones is starting I stop pedaling and even touch the brakes a tiny bit while moving more to the right and glancing over my shoulder. Most drivers interpret this as "go signal" and there is less delay in their decision to start overtaking. More cars can fit through the gap in oncoming traffic. As the gap is ending I start pedaling full power again. It turns out that while the previous approach resulted in about 32kph through the whole 2km section with this new one I have enough in me to briefly go 40kph after the break for overtaking cars which seems to help the next driver decide they don't need to squeeze past me. I never thought a cyclist could accelerate quickly and significantly enough for it to have visible influence on drivers around making safer choices but it turns out even a 70kg asthmatic cyclist on a 20kg recumbent bike can have enough fitness for that. I will see if I ever get any good video of this working. But I think until I figure out a rear view camera looking at what the cars behind me are doing this will not be very visible.

I can’t applaud these videos enough! All those crash videos on YT can get on your nerves, making you feel anxious and as if the whole world is full of enraged & entitled … These positive attitude videos calm the nerve and show that when you keep your calm it can be smooth sailing for everyone. And yes, there are still impatient and dangerous drivers out there, but as long as you keep calm and let their actions slip in the safest way, then no horrible dash cam video comes from it. Keep safe and thank you so much for these ‘nice driving’ videos, Ashley! They help a lot (and also teach ways to make things a non-event)!

The last clip is the exact situation many motorists claim they "hate cyclists" for, because it makes them get to the next red light like 10 seconds later than they would have. It's not the actual situation that causes the hatred, it's the horrible mentality some people have. We see in this clip that if you have a good mentality you know to be patient and share the road, and we can see that from cyclists and drivers alike. If everyone could be a bit more kind, patient and respectful, the roads would be a much more pleasant place to travel.

I've been a hearing aid user since childhood but lately I've been noticing that my high frequency hearing is now none existent where I did have some in the past. There's thing in those higher frequencies that I can't hear, my cooker beeping, the neighbours cat meowing and I've just tested it and I can't hear my cycling bell. I hope that the cyclists here take this part away from the video if anything because I've had some cyclists angrily barge past me before and now I'm wondering how long they were behind me ringing a bell.

I'm noticing this while my preferred bike is waiting for a new back wheel (I get through them!) - that one has a bulb horn on the handlebars. Going to the shops on my commuter bicycle which has a tiny bell, I'm having to ring it a lot and often even having to "excuse me can I get past". I live somewhere that seems to have plenty of older people out and about. I rarely had to honk twice, but overcooking the squeeze did occasionally result in people staggering about, clutching their hearts, with looks of horror on their faces. It's just a cheap ordinary bike horn. It's hard to get the balance right.

I've always thought the 10mph rule for crossing double white lines a bit arbitrary. There's a steep hill near me, that I am much slower than 10mph going up, but it's still not safe for a car to overtake on the double whites. There's a downhill section that I can do a good 25mph on, yet there is a spot where I think an overtake on double whites is safe. I don't get hung up on this 10mph threshold when driving or cycling, the key is it's done safely.

At around 1:00 yes totally agree that some kind of warning further back would have been in order, for the following reasons 1. Unlikely to startle the other cyclist and avoids getting them flustered 2. Earlier warning comes across as less pushy and aggressive 3. Gives the other cyclist more time to take action
@BicycleJason
@BicycleJason 9 ай бұрын
That is with hindsight. Up until the point that the cammer used their bell the rider in front had not crossed the central line. There was no oncoming traffic so a pass could easily be effected by crossing over the central line without the need for a warning. However the rider in front then moved over further than they had previously been, crossing over the central line. I believe this was therefore a good time to let them know, and also the trigger for the bell use.

With regards to the last clip, I would say that I was about to overtake the cyclist as the speed changed from 30mph to 40mph but I saw vehicles come around the corner up the road. At the time I didn't realise they had their hazards lights on and were travelling in a slow convoy together so yes, in hindsight I could've continued the overtake but as I had already aborted the risk was increasing for all of us and it reached the point where it was too high to chance it. I was prepared to stay behind the cyclist until the solid lines stopped but once I realised they were stopping, and quite correctly waited until the speed was slower than 10mph I overtook with a thank you from me and returned by the cyclist. For those wondering, there was no time lost on my overall journey time as there was traffic further up the road. No time lost keeping everyone safe

You are right, it is a bad habit I am finding difficult to shake. Working on it though. Here is a bit of context though: An actual minimum latelar distance form a cyclist has become law here less then 2 years ago. Even so a percentage of drivers still feel this does not apply and will roar rage on you when they think you should be further to the edge so they can squeeze past dangerously. So for most of my life I was used to balancing the risk of being passed while there is a car in the other direction and the risk of being intentionally run off the road by a side or a car for not letting him do that (happened to me repeatedly). I think this combined with the most potholes being where the right tires of most cars go and surface being better between there and the edge led me to develop this bad habit. And I see daily that I am far from only one in CZ who does that. It will take time to change. Also I have to say the wide lens camera seems to make it look a lot worse than it looks to me in real life. My right elbow is a meter from the parked car when it looks like 40cm on the video. I myself was surprised how bad it looks in many of my videos.

@ColinSmith2001
@ColinSmith2001 9 ай бұрын

@mda5003
@mda5003 9 ай бұрын
@@ColinSmith2001 That may be what it says in the Highway Code but that is for guidance only. Pedestrians are still road users and there are separate rules for pedestrians within the Highway Code. However, it is also a requirement to allow them 2 metres when passing where there is no pavement as opposed to 1.5 metres for cyclists. 8:04 Cycling in this situation, you should be out into primary position here as soon as the overtake is no longer safe. In this case it was a very patient driver, but I've mistaken similar hesitation from a driver for patience, when they are actually just incompetent. Quite often they'll hang back when they could have overtaken safely, then get flustered because they've been waiting a few seconds and make an irrational and dangerous pass. Using a strong road position means you take the decision out of the driver's hands (well, as much as is possible with a bike). It can take the pressure off them, especially if there are cars behind. They can blame the cyclist for 'riding in the middle of the road', instead of questioning their own ability!
@smilerbob
@smilerbob 9 ай бұрын
It is a fine balance between being seen as patient against giving either a hurry up signal to the cyclist or I'm going to do something to put us both in danger. I don't want to be too far behind that then encourages vehicles behind to overtake neither do I want to be too close to the cyclist putting them under pressure. I hope in this clip I found that balance and the reason I didn't overtake earlier (as mentioned in a separate post) is the cars coming the opposite direction. Although it is a 40mph limit, drivers very rarely stick to it but once I realised they were in a slow convoy it was too late to overtake safely. I would much rather wait than risk anything. I am wondering if there have been a few "close" passes - and I use the phrase close to mean close to an accident with oncoming vehicles as much as close to the cyclist - which is why they didn't move out into primary?
@shm5547
@shm5547 9 ай бұрын
@@smilerbob no criticism of the driving here, it's far better to err on the side of caution. I think the cyclist here is just not very assertive, that's why they didn't move into primary. They're even riding in the gutter when you first approach. If I was to generalise a bit, in my experience this is either because they're a hard-as-nails time-trialist who likes close passes because of the draft or they're quite a timid rider who doesn't want to get in anybody's way.

@@smilerbob yep, knowing that drivers often break the limits there would certainly warrant a cautious approach. The wide angles also make things look further away than they actually are. Some cyclists like riding in the gutter if it's smooth - particularly the white lines can be faster than the road surface. But for me, it's the risk of rabbits/squirrels/stoats etc... dashing out of the verge. Also, you're less visible nearer the edge and can blend in with the verge clutter, particularly where there's shadows from hedgerows and trees.

I'm a cyclist who rides 3-4000 miles a year on country lanes, so I encounter quite a few horses. I've never been really sure what to do when overtaking. I always overtake carefully, steadily and very wide - I'll only pass where there would be plenty of room to pass in a car. However - should I give a warning? Obviously I wouldn't consider using the bell, just as I wouldn't sound the horn in a car - but would riders prefer cyclists to be calling a warning (e.g. "cyclist behind") before passing, or not? Since horses' hearing is keener than humans', I've always assumed that they will have picked up on the small sounds of my approaching bike and won't be surprised by me, so I've always overtaken quietly, but I've had a couple of riders say things like "don't just sneak up on us like that!" as I've gone past. What would riders prefer?

In both Canada and the USA, when on a shared pedestrian / cycling path, it's quite common for the cyclist to politely call out "Passing on your left" or similar when passing other cyclists or pedestrians. Also over there, both cyclists and pedestrians are pretty good at keeping to the right when on a path, since they drive on the right over there.

I do find a lot of delivery cyclists to be too impatient sometimes and can be a bit worrying. One Uber Eats cyclist came very close to me and my mum yesterday in a large town, Ipswich, and the cyclist just came straight for us to pass and I said, careful mum and he looked at me weirdly after passing closely. After that, he zoomed closely past a group of people with no bell or warning voice. I just think like Ashley has said in previous videos though they're just put under a lot of pressure, but should probably try and be a lot safer. It's good that some are very safe, patient and good though.

@@AshleyNeal-JustCycling They should demand proof of such training. For comparison, companies which require you to be able to drive don't have to teach you but rather demand a copy of your driving license. Actually, I'm all for requiring a license to cycle on the road for any purpose, but that's a different debate. BTW I learned some years ago that these companies carry (at least they did then) insurance for their riders; if there were some sort of certificate then their insurance costs might be lower. Personally, I hate bells, dogs get annoyed at them, folk tend to jump when they hear them, and its in the auditory pain threshold for horses, so never use them. Much preferer the old, 'Hello', and 'coming by'. Always use calling out and often the horse knows you are there before the rider does. Came across one horse once that didnt, I told the rider your horse is deaf, 2 weeks later same rider, and she stopped me and thanked me, had the horse tested and it was, she didnt even know. The recliner bike clip. It looks like the bike doesn't look like it has a front light. Whilst not always a legal requirement, they do make you more visible especially in gloomy conditions. Not that the car driver is any better illuminated for the condition. This is, of course, in addition to the car driver's poor observation skills or failure to judge the cyclist's closing speed.

There may be a good time to ding the bell. However in both instances on this video the bell has been rung and the cyclists slowed down to the pedestrians speed anyway. So why ring the bell? I hate it when I’m walking on a shared path and a cyclist dings me out of their way , I wouldn’t hoot and expect a cyclist to move over for me in my car, I close up and wait and they’ll notice. Travel at a speed you can stop at in the space you can see to be clear and assume they haven’t heard you! A cough or a voice is better than an imperious PING
@Soupdragonism
@Soupdragonism 9 ай бұрын
Most of my cycling is on shared paths and regularly use my bell when behind cyclists. I don't "ding people out of my way". Sometimes its to tell them I'm passing and other times its a request to let me pass. I'm very patient with pedestrians and the majority are happy to move regardless of whether a bell has been used. If my bell hasn't been used many apologise for not knowing I'm there. Many comment on and thank me for using a bell. My PING is friendly, not imperious. I get a better reception when using a bell than before getting it when I would cough or speak to let people know I was there and often get a tedious "where's your bell?" comment. I think your perception of it is the problem and it could be argued your expectation for cyclists to simply accomodate you is imperious. Are you judging others by your standards? You comparison to a motorist behind a cyclist is different, cyclists are often almost silent, motor vehicles aren't. When cycling I know if there's a car behind me. In many of these videos aiding traffic flow is seen as the ideal. Expecting other traffic to slow until you've notice them doesn't really work.

Ah bells, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Whilst you might be a good pedestrian who is expecting cyclists to pass on a shared path, not everybody is. I gave a dog walker (and their dog!) a fright the other day, despite slowing right down to pass them with plenty of space on a single track road, they both jumped out of their skin. The dog leapt in front of the pedestrian and nearly tripped them up! I didn't even say boo!
@highdownmartin

@@Soupdragonism no I’m not imperious, it’s just that sometimes a bell precedes a cyclist who is not slowing enough given the space, and passes at a significantly higher speed than I would in that situation. I’ll ratchet my freewheel to make bit of noise, as I haven’t got a problem slowing right up. I also regard a red traffic light as a chance for a breather! And a tdi is noisier than a cycle I’ll grant you, and again I’ve no problem slowing and passing respectfully. Usually walking our two dogs so it’s not the ping that’s the issue is sometimes the dik doing the pinging

1:00 I actually think this is poor cycling as your viewer failed to maintain a safe gap. The Highway Code says to not get closer than your overall stopping distance and to be able to pull up safely if the vehicle in front suddenly slows down or stops. Also, that cyclist in front was highly likely to swerve into your viewer's path and that's why they should've follow further back, warned earlier and left more room.
@QiuEnnan
@QiuEnnan 9 ай бұрын
2:26 that's actually illegal - you must not use hazard warning lights when driving unless you are on an unrestricted dual carriageway or motorway and need to warn traffic behind. Using them in this way desensitises people to them as they are meant to be a severe warning when seen used by someone in motion.
