By now you must know CPM-3V is one of our most favorite steels. Few steels offer more wear resistance combined with toughness to make create a real world high edge retention as 3V does.
So of course... when it looks like there is an amazing deal to be had with a 3V knife we are here to test it! Introducing ‪@knivesandtools‬ exclusive edition of the Lionsteel M5 in 3V!! This knife was already nice but now for just a little more it has 3V!! So.... is this a good deal? Find out in our episode!

Great vid again guys. I used to want 90 degree spines for bushcraft myself but today I don't like using the spine of my knives for scraping fire steels. I now use a fire scraper ( esee fire scrapper, works with steels, flints and also has a bow drill divet as well) . To each their own though right. Anyways , much love to you both and your families 👪

I picked up a pack of strikers and added them to the paracord loop on my ferrocerium rods. This way, I always have a good spark off them, no matter which knife I pick up. I can understand people not wanting to bother with an extra thing, but it's a good solution for me.

I had to make it secondary convex with work sharp to be usable again (30 degrees). Now it is great. But Lionsteel makes thick edges on its knives. Esse also have V edge but do great feathersticking! I would chose M390 any time over 3V. Corrosion resistance is a big deal to me, and I am not fan of coated blades. M390 is a great steel too. They should do Lionsteel B41 in 3v, it was Sleipner steel, but improving from m390 is not that much improvement to me.

As a non-expert, I'm still puzzled by this whole Carbon vs Tool vs Supersteel debate? I read in many reviews that higher carbon steel (e.g. Sleiper) is easier to sharpen and tougher? Yes, it may be prone to rust and blemishes, but can't you use oil and look after your carbon steels? Ray Mears/Lars Falt and many too chefs seem to go for high carbon steels? You guys seem to be totally on board with 'super steel', but not everyone is an expert on sharpening or has access to lots of sharpening technology! Doesn't the extra time/care needed to sharpen stainless steel knives override the disadvantage with carbon steels of having to add a bit of oil or polish? Anyway, I may be talking nonsense..before researching which knives to buy I never knew steel was such a technical geek paradise :-) Now I'm really torn between whether - as someone who just enjoys bushcraft, but doesn't want to spend weeks regrinding/sharpening his knife - whether to go for the Sleiper, the Niolox or the CPM3V version of the M5? Great channel btw :-)

First option: Get some GOOD sharpening stones (Naniwa Professional, Shapton Glass HR, etc.) and a cheap V-edged knife to practice Second option: Get a Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener (Ken Onion Edition) and let the machine do the work Third option: Mousepad + sandpaper + double sided tape + very low angle and medium pressure. @@robinhardwood1593 how you get on doing it like did you manage to do the convex.
@robinhardwood1593
@robinhardwood1593 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jib230181 I watched some videos about hand sharpening, DBK did some as well, especially on the convexing. There's two things I had to learn: First, that you need good sharpening stones, not crappy 4 in 1 for 35 €. I personally like the Shapton Glass Stones in the HR variant, they sharpen great and are less expensive than the Naniwa Professional stones. It is very important that you get stones that bind the abrasives in anorganic material, like Magnesium, not organic resin! Second: If you're doing a secondary convex you're not working on the cutting edge (at least not in the beginning) but instead you want to round off the edges right and left, where the V-grind meets the primary blade grind. Your angle is therefore in between your edge angle and the primary grind angle. If you're working on a tough steel, like CPM 3V, you will get a huge improvement when doing a narrower secondary convex than on a knife with less tougher steel (like M390). CPM 3V can take thinner edges while retaining the same strength as other steels and since edge geometry is the most important factor on cutting performance, you should put this advantage to some good use :)

They have done this in the past Marten bought a brisa/enzo trapper in elmax as a kit, I bought the same kit. And loved it as a project, and the elmax steel is great.
