Ahhh, what a movie. We're both big fans of the first Evil Dead film, and it only makes sense for Chris to finally watch the second! Altaf loves this movie, and he was really excited to show it to him! Enjoy Chris' first time watching Evil Dead 2, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell!

@@NiceDudeMovieNight YES! Although maybe it's Raimi learning from his mistakes: his previous film, Crimewave, tried kind of the same tone and for the most part, failed miserably. It's a thin line between fun batshit and tedious batshit. Although I'd recommend it to any anyone who's into Raimi just to see the development of his style.

It’s not actually a soft reboot, it’s that when they made the sequel, they didn’t have the rights to the original, so they had to re-film the scenes with Ash and his girlfriend. In the scene where Ash gets grabbed by the camera evil, that’s where the real sequel starts lining up with the end of the first movie. If you ever watch Army of darkness and then the ash versus evil dead series, it references the first and the second movies.

As far as I know, the reason why the first part of Evil Dead II seems like an accelerated recap of the first movie is that they didn't have the right to use footage directly from the 1st one. I'm pretty sure they thought it was still necessary to do a recap since they didn't think most people would have seen the 1st one (because it was still considered a small indy movie at the time). They probably decided to cut some parts they didn't really need for their plans for Evil Dead II (the friends, the sister). If you want to make a seemless brige between the two movies, you could take the ending of Evil Dead where Ash gets hit by the demon and start Evil Dead II when he flies through the air at turbo jet speed until he smashes into a tree (which you seem to have noticed). The same thing will happen with Army of Darkness. There will be another weird recap using none of the footage from the previous two movies.

I learned some pretty fun behind-the-scenes facts about this movie from Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi when I attended Brucefest at the beginning of December. They did live commentary on Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness! Here are some of my favorites from the Evil Dead II watch-along: 1:43 - Sam insisted that they use coal to create the sediment for the graveyard that Ash is digging in. Bruce and Ted both agreed that it was a brilliant choice. It ended up looking pretty cool. 1:51 - In making the first Evil Dead movie, Sam Raimi came across the magnifying glass necklace at a mall in Michigan. It was cheap as hell but Sam was inspired by it and told Bruce that Ash would use the magnifying glass to focus the sunlight and burn the Necronomicon. Bruce thought it was the dumbest thing in the world and still hates that necklace to this day. 1:59 - To get this shot, they strapped Bruce's body onto a giant "X" shape. This shape was fixed to an electronic rig that could spin clockwise and counter-clockwise with a remote, which Sam had full control of. On the day that they filmed this scene, when Bruce was fixed onto the rig and waiting to film, one of the crew members asked: "What'd you have for breakfast this morning?" Bruce was confused by the question, and the crew member simply said something along the lines of: "I just wanna know, because it'll probably all be coming out of ya soon." With Sam having full control over the spinning, he could torture Bruce all he liked. And to make matters worse, there were people off-screen who were tasked with hitting Bruce with tree branches as he spun around. 2:49 - This is Sam's personal car. He's had it since he and Bruce were teenagers. Bruce thinks it's a total piece of shit, but Sam insists that the car, who he calls "The Classic," makes an appearance in every movie he does. He even stripped the car down so it could be used in a WESTERN. They used the Delta's frame as a base for a covered wagon. Bruce thinks that something •really special• must've happened in that car when Sam was younger. ;) 5:31 - The piece of direction that Bruce got from Sam for this scene was: "You're too scared to scream." Ted said Bruce took that direction beautifully. I can't disagree. It's ridiculous, but Bruce totally nailed what Sam was going for. There was also an incident where, while Bruce was doing different takes of him screaming, there was one crew member who was "mocking" his screams up in the rafters. Turns out the dude was getting electrocuted and was *actually* screaming. Oops. 5:50 - Probably one of the funniest things on this list for me. The "workshed" line. If you're from my generation, then you're probably all too familiar with the movie Sky High, in which Bruce plays a character named Coach Boomer. Kurt Russell is also in that film, and when Bruce met Kurt for the first time, the first thing Kurt said to him was "say workshed." Bruce was very confused, understandably. Then Kurt explained that his son, upon hearing that he was going to work with Bruce, asked if he could tell Bruce that he thought the "workshed" line from Evil Dead II was the funniest thing in the world. Bruce admitted that the line felt misplaced in the scene, but now I can't imagine the scene without it. It's fuckin' hilarious. 6:20 - Bruce recalls how awkward it was to fight this puppet for the movie. He said he kinda just shoved it and pushed it away. If you watch that clip at 6:24 with this knowledge, it's quite hilarious. 8:22 - Bruce had so many great stories about Dan Hicks, the actor who played Jake. The only one I can remember well is that, when he auditioned, they weren't sure he was the right choice. That is, until he said, "I can take out my teeth if you want!" 8:36 - Yes, those are real ceramic plates. Yes, Bruce was really smashing them over his head. The secret, according to Bruce, is to use plates that haven't been fired yet. Apparently, Sam was able to find a ton of plates to use at local shops, and they were pretty cheap. 9:00 - Those "chipmunk noises" coming from the hand are all courtesy of Sam Raimi. *All of them.* 10:24 - Sam wanted this fountain of blood to shoot at Ash in a very specific way. So, to get it the way he wanted, they actually had to lay Bruce down on his back and simply pour the blood onto him from above, then flip the footage in post to make it look like everything was right-side up. Bruce asked Sam, "What if I need you to stop for some reason? Like I'm choking?" Sam said, "Just flail your arms around or something," to which Bruce responded with, "That's what I'm doing in the scene anyway!" 10:44 - This scene is incredible when you learn that every single crew member was hard at work here. There wasn't one person on set without a job to do for this. For every object you see moving here, there's a human being hidden off-camera, controlling it. Crazy, right? 11:59 - Heeeeeeeere's Teddy! If you didn't already know, there's a 20-year-old Ted Raimi in that monstrous suit. The makeup, prosthetics, and suit took several hours to put on. The suit had sandbags on it to create the hefty fat effect that they needed for Henrietta, making it 15-20 pounds heavier. The suit itself would be filled with his sweat at the end of each day. Like, FILLED. He would take off his boots and literally POUR the sweat out. Apparently, some crew members would measure the sweat in little plastic cups and label them by date, so you'd be able to determine which days Ted had it the worst. (We'll come back to this whole sweat thing). BONUS: Bruce and Ted both described contact lenses as "Tupperware for your eyes." That's how uncomfortable that shit was back in the day. 12:36 - One time, during a screening of this film to an audience, two young men ran out of the theater after witnessing this scene. Bruce decided to follow them and question them about their departure. Turns out the two of them were *crying* with laughter. Just full-on losing their shit at this scene. 15:33 - There were several instances where Dan *actually* hit Bruce in these scenes. Bruce didn't hesitate to point out each and every one of them, including one where his heel hits Dan's nuts on accident afterward, and it was still kept in the movie (but not shown in this video, unfortunately). 16:36 - Sarah Uriarte Berry (playing Annie Knowby) was really dragging Dan's body down this hallway, and she had to do it several times to get the right take. That "SHUT UP!" was really just Sarah being super fed up with Dan's screaming and having to drag his sorry ass around in general. 16:51 - Sam likes to keep actors out of the loop when it comes to the quantity of blood they might be dealing with on any certain day of filming. That being said, Sarah and Dan had no idea how much blood was gonna come pouring out of the cellar when they were filming this scene. They just had to adapt at the moment and run with it. Also, when Ted was grabbing Dan's face from the cellar, he accidentally jammed his fingers into one of Dan's eyes while trying to grab him. Eventually, they had to do some takes where Ted didn't have the contact lenses in because he couldn't see what he was doing and had been grabbing Dan's face in painful ways without realizing it. 17:03 - I can assure you, out of all the Evil Dead films, this one was the *least* taxing for Bruce. Was he having a blast, though? Most certainly not. Still, it's much better than the shit he had to go through for Army of Darkness. Bruce has a real love/hate relationship with that film, and I gotta say, it's mostly the latter. 18:19 - Sam wanted the chainsaw to constantly look like it was on and ready, and to do that, he wanted the smoke to actively waft out of it during each scene. The only smoke they could get for this effect was tobacco smoke. They had tubes that ran through Bruce's clothing and into the chainsaw prop to do this, but it left Bruce with tobacco-stained lines on his skin after the shoot. 19:04 - Back to our Ted Talk! Bruce said that Ted was literally spraying sweat everywhere as he spun around for this scene. Said it was the most disgusting thing in the world. There's one part of the scene (cut out of this video) where Ash gets Henrietta's attention with a taunt, and she swings her head around to scream at him. Her head is sideways, and if you look closely near the end of the cut, you can see liquid gushing out of the ear that's facing the floor. That wasn't just some nasty practical effect. That was simply Ted Raimi's sweat. Pouring from his ear like a goddamn waterfall. Lovely. 19:56 - Shotguns are far too heavy to spin as Ash does here. It would tear up your finger if you tried to do so. But they figured out a way to make it look real while still making it comfortable and much more mobile. They balanced both ends of the "shotgun" with fishing weights. Bruce said they figured out the perfect ratio and that he could leave the thing spinning on his finger for hours without it stopping. 20:16 - I can't remember exactly what they named this prop, but it was something along the lines of "Rotten Apple Head." They had no idea what to do with it after filming had wrapped, but two guys from the town they were shooting in in Tennessee asked if they could have it for a haunted house attraction, so that's where it lived for several years after the movie had finished filming. 20:50 - They used every color of blood imaginable in this movie. Why? Because they figured that having blood that didn't look like blood would help them get a less harsh rating for their movie. It didn't help. It was still released as an unrated film. 22:23 - hey, it's Sam! Alright. That's the best of what I can remember from Bruce and Ted's commentary for this brilliant film. If you read all this, thanks! I hope you enjoyed it. Now you have more shit in your arsenal of trivia to spout while forcing all your friends and family to watch this movie. You're welcome. ;)

Then me n my bro saw this zombie or undead movie screening, army + medieval theme, horror plus actions, straight away we asked our parents to buy tickets and watched it that night 😊 After the movie, felt like we missed out a lot from the story or the beginning of all things, then we traced the origin movies, only by then we came across Evil Dead 1 & 2. This movie is a lot funnier than the first one! I highly recommend Stephen King's Creepshow from 1982. Based on King's stories and inspired by 1950's comics, Adrienne Barbeau, Hal Holbrook, Fritz Weaver, Leslie Neilsen, Carrie Nye, EG Marshall, Viveca Lindfors, Ed Harris, Ted Danson and King himself star in this comedy horror anthology film about a murdered man who wants his cake, a hillbilly encountering an alien plant, a murderous husband, a crated Creature, and a corrupt businessman with a serious roach problem. "The most fun you'll ever have being scared." Directed by George Romero.

Another gorgeous bout of insanity by Raimi is Darkman - basically, he wanted to make a The Shadow (or The Spider, he loves both characters) movie but couldn't get the rights, so he made his own pulp mystery man. Liam Neeson, Frances McDormand, Larry Drake, Colin Friels... And so, *_so_* many camera tricks and moves that he later used in Spider-Man.

Fun fact: Ash Williams is in a video game franchise of the same name, so he's in a game called Poker Night at the Inventory 2! The first game has you face off against Max (from Sam and Max), Tycho (from Penny Arcade), Strong Bad (from Homestar Runner), and Heavy (from Team Fortress 2). In the sequel, you get to meet Sam (once again, from Sam and Max), Brock Samson (from The Venture Brothers), a robot from Borderlands 2, and, of course, Ash, who has his own tournament arena in the game!

Just letting you know, the first couple scenes are actually a recap of Evil Dead 1, as this movie starts literally as the first movie ends. The reason they refilmed it is because Raimi somehow didn't have the rights to Evil Dead 1 by the time they filmed this one.

So fun fact about Evil Dead 2: it's a requel! They didn't have the rights to their own film when they made the second, and so they cover the major plot beats at the beginning of the second film; however, if you watch the first film, Ash is attacked by the Kandarian Demon at the end. About 7-10 minutes in Evil Dead 2, Ash is attacked by the Kandarian Demon in the same fashion. So if you watch the first, and start the second at that attack point, it actually shows Ash's friends all dying, and him spending two full nights in the cabin, slowly losing his mind.

Can't wait to see your reaction to Army of Darkness which really leans into the humor, and truly represents the delicious, hammy and cheesy gloriousness, that defines the legend, of not only Ash but also The Bruce! And quite honestly, as much as I love the movies, the ultimate experience, that blends the best elements of all 3 films, with a quantum leap in effects, is the hilarious, gore fest, the series Ash vs Evil Dead! It's the chef's kiss! The only negative, is that it ended and there aren't more seasons. Also, highly recommend two other great movies, by The Bruce, the indescribable, Bubba Ho-Tep, co-starring the late great Ossie Davis, it's an incredibly wonderous oddity, that's sure make you laugh out loud. The other film is the brilliantly meta, ham and cheese glory of, My Name is Bruce, which has a plethora, of Evil Dead references. He's starred or co-starred on 3 great series you may want to check out as well, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., a western, action, adventure, comedy, that loves to play with the genre, even adding some sci fi elements, has an incredible cast and some brilliant recurring guest stars, including the OG, Gomez Addams from The Addams Family series, Mr. John Astin, who always plays the most loveable, goofball, eccentrics. Jack of All Trades, a series best described as, Hogan's Heroes, meets, Zorro, which too, has a wonderful cast, and some amazing guest stars, with Mini Me, himself Verne Troyer, of Austin Powers fame, being the most notable, and who plays a historical figure, in a part, that's so wrong, it's GENUIS and hilarious. Burn Notice, is by far his most serious and dramatic role, co-starring in a spy, espionage, drama, with heart and plenty of organic humor, so not so much on the ham and cheese, but Bruce does get to stretch his acting muscles a bit, a delivers a great performance, but still allows him to have his wonderous Bruce, moments!

It's not a reboot if you watch the beginning of the movie. It's the end of the last movie where they were trying to escape but they couldn't. So this movie gives you a glimpse of the last movie so it gives you a perspective of what it is heading into in the second movie

When I worked at the video store Evil Dead Series was on my staff picks shelf, in Tucson Arizona. Part of the film and Sam's family lives close to where my mom lives. I am not sure on the exact details, because its been awhile since I looked into it, but here is what I remember, without looking it up. So, if I am wrong on anything let me know. Evil Dead 1 and Evil Dead 2 was written as one movie. But when they first filmed it, it was either a student film or something similar and had a very small budget, and wasn't able to produce the full film. That is kind of why Army of Darkness is called Army of Darkness instead of Evil Dead 3. The story is Ash and his friends go to a cabin out in the woods for a weekend. They find the book and everyone begins getting possessed. After everyone dies and all that is left is Ash, he becomes possessed and he has to fight off the possession. The man that found the book of the dead originally, his daughter went looking for them, and they try to defeat the demon by reciting the passages. Which she ends up dying and Ash is sent through time to the past where he was the hero, that was mentioned in the Book of the Dead. The Necronomicon. That last paragraph is basically the 2 first movies. The first movie they go to the cabin, the friends get possessed and at the end, Ash gets possessed. The second movie the first 7 minutes, are basically a flash back to the first movie, which was changed because of rights issues. But then begins with Ash being possessed. I have heard that somewhere out there, that some actually made all 3 movies work with each other. I think that is the only the movies are actually coherent. If you end when Ash falls in the puddle of the first movie, and start the second movie as Ash gets up, and then when Ash goes into the portal, you cut from that to the beginning of Army of Darkness.

Here's a fun one, there is a tabletop roleplaying game called Deadlands, which has four settings in an alternate U.S.; Wild West, 1930s, post apocalypse sometime in the 2060s, and the colony that got left on their own due to what happens in said post apocalypse. I mention this, because there was old material that ties this series into that game. No spoilers though. Just a fun bit of trivia.

It's not a soft reboot, but the first few minutes is a re-cap of Evil Dead 1, they had to shoot new scenes because they didn't have the rights to use the footage from the first movie. The moment where Ash is sent flying through the trees is where the Evil Dead 2 officially begins, right where Evil Dead 1 left off.

The reason for the new scenes in the beginning of Evil Dead 2 and Army of darkness was due to footage rights they couldn’t get the rights for the footage due to someone else having them and they didn’t want to give it up. Same thing happened for evil dead Sam mentioned it in the evil dead 2 audio commentary. The DVD also has a making up mini documentary they made while filming it. The inside was done in a closed high school gym during the summer it was 2 story’s tall and an oven.

if you liked this one, you will love Army of Darkness. fun fact, though, when you see the deadite version of Ash (when he had white eyes), those were contacts he had to wear, and when they're all white, he was literally blind, so every time he acted with those in, he had to guess where to go. If you look closely at some of the scenes in which he has the contacts, you'll see that when he reaches out, for a split second, it looks as if he is just blindly reaching out, but when you see his hand make contact with the actor, he quickly guides his hands into the right position. in Evil Dead, they did the same thing, so those who had to have contacts were blind while they acted also, another fun fact, the reason you see all different shades of blood is because originally this movie was going to be rated NC-17 (no children under seventeen permitted), but in order to keep the R rating, they changed the color of blood in those sequences. also, if you look carefully at the Henrietta character as she's dangling and twirling from the ceiling, if you look closely at the rear while she twirls in between the legs, you can see that the body suit was not fully put together, and you can see the split part of the body suit plus, when the girl swallows the eye, that was actually a shot done in reverse... you learn so many cool things about this movie in the behind the scenes featurette. that's one of the reasons why i love 80s horror films. the practical effects give those movies a more realistic feel, and corny b rated horror films liek this, the cliches and campiness add to the nostalgia
