I've not seen the series, but I know something of the history. People should realise how crucial James was for the survival of our nation. Foreign powers were trying to gobble us up, and there were so few surviving members of the Royal Family, when Elizabeth died in 1603. But there was a man, a King, who had the necessary descent. ( His great-grandmother was Henry VIII's sister.) And quite a remarkable man too. As James VI, King of Scots, he will have known that of the line of Jameses , Kings of Scots, four had died violently. He was taken away from his mother - also executed - when he was six months old. He was brought up believing his mother had been accessory to his father's murder. (I believe this was true. But Mary, Queen of Scots ( his mother) to be honest had a lot of excuse!). Not surprising he grew up very emotionally needy. He was extremely well educated. His policies were partly wise, partly not; he opposed the authority of Parliament, but kept us out of the Thirty Years' War for the most part. And of course, our present King is his descendant, through his daughter Elizabeth. Prince William is descended three other ways, through illegitimate descendants of his son Charles.
