In this short video Philip gives an introduction to these incredibly small pair of portrait miniatures commissioned by Nicholas Hilliard's early patron and champion, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Rumoured to have been the first true love of Queen Elizabeth I, Dudley commissioned this locket pair as a token of his favour and so would have been worn by Gloriana herself. On display until 18 April 2019 as part of Jewel in the Hand: Early Portrait Miniatures from Noble and Private Collections.
