Here is very rare footage of Nick Barker ex.Dimmu Borgir. This vid is from 2003 show.
For all drummers we longed this close shoot, we haven't seen his drumming by real close camera.

What Nick Barker has that is impossible to teach is the *feel* for the drumkit, his own dynamic touch and still gets to be very creative at 250+ bpm. This is what 99% of other pro drummers lack. Amazing - and he's a very down to earth guy too.

That was the first thing it called my attention. Nick is a BEAST. By the way, I've seen Frost (satyricon) stroking the ride with a similar technique in the track Mother North live at the opera. Check the video out. Stunning skills these monsters!

I've actually gotten people to cross the "genre divide" by playing them Barker's ride cymbal work. Gotten them to open up to hard or "extreme" music for the first time in the process. Sounds like a joke I know, but it's true haha. Folks with a good ear for music; they just hadn't found their connection with heavy music yet. I had them listen close to Barker's absolutely mental, bespoke ride patterns, and it clicked for them. Seemed to exemplify the amt of detail, attention, and groove put into the music. Down to a single cymbal on the drums! Barker's ride work is always the highlight of a record he's played on. Such a groovy, clean signature. Barker and Hoglan, absolute fucking beasts.

This song is Guds Fortapelse, and yet I can find no other videos on youtube where Dimmu is playing this song live- does anyone have a version of this with the whole band included or something? I'd love to see this song played by them; this is just not complete with only Nick. Furthermore, the way I see it, triggers are just amplifiers- So if every other musician on the stage is using them, why can't the drummer?

drumming is not about hitting the drum as hard as you can. tension free, loose and being fluid is what makes a great drummer. nick is a great example. Triggers are not a crutch. if you notice the axis longbaords pedals, w/ sonic hammers (aka flat head beaters) these pedals have high tension springs and promote spreed, which does not harm the head as much as a heavier round mallet beater, the flat head is lighter/easier to use. Most of the best death/black/extreme metal drummers use them...

He has anxiety problem and smokes weed before the show Nick talked about it in an interview. So he was probably stoned while playing this song. xD Anyway thats probably one of the few reasons he was difficult to work with, and he gets quite nasty when he drinks alcohol. Dani Filth in one interview once told he barely managed to jump through the window and save his head cause Nick was drunk and wanted to kill him. :D

If u knew what a trigger did, it clarify's and defines the sounds and is neccesary for the incredible speed of someone like barker, when u play that fast, its very very hard to get the definition with hanging mics, theres to much echo, the mic doesnt have time to definivtily produce the sound cleary of toms and bass drums, you can hear his compostions beautifully because of them

@renshammar I've seen vids with Kollias and Roddy untrigged, and believe me, they've got powerful strokes as hell, even at higher tempos. I've also seen a clinic with Kollias where he explains that he tries to play with maksimum powah all the time because he doesn't want to "cheat" by tapping and letting the triggers do the job. So, to sum up, Kollias would sound quite good live with just miced drums. The triggers are so that the sound of the bassdrum projects better to keep everything tight.
