I grew up in Winnipeg in the late 70's & early 80's The AWA was huge there, they did hours & hours of TV from The Winnipeg Arena. Heenan & Bockwinkel were my introduction to Pro-Wrestling. Bockwinkel is the greatest AWA World Champion of all time 💪 I was l lucky kid 🥰

In 1979, a new pro wrestling publication hit newsstands and magazine racks across the nation. It was Pro Wrestling Illustrated. When the first issue went to press, Nick Bockwinkel was ranked at #6 in the Most Hated Wrestlers category and was also the American Wrestling Association World's Heavyweight Champion.

Heenan's resemblance to George Steinbrenner is almost uncanny here. They became close friends in Tampa.

I almost forgot how great Nick Bockwinkel was on the microphone 🎤 The man was in a class all by himself, and to have another great promo pioneer on his side in Bobby Heenan? The babyfaces didn't have a chance in hell...

A zoo of danger! I didn't know wrestlers had to put up money to enter a battle royale. Is that why they always called it "invitational"?

How soon was it after this that Bobby left for the WWF?

Jonathan Turbide You wonder what Kind of deal Nick had with Verne that he never left the AWA for the NWA or WWF? The guy was an AWA lifer.

LT9856 - Excellent question my friend! My guess is that Nick was loyal to Verne since he felt like Verne was the man who turned him into a true main-eventer (before he worked for Verne his career was rather average) and since Nick was the ultimate professional both in and out of the ring he probably felt like it was his duty to stay loyal to the man who turned him into one of the greatest heels of all time. I've read that when Nick left for WWF in late 1987 to become a commentator/agent he felt really really bad to leave Verne, even if the promotion was basically dead at the time. I think it's part of the reason why his WWF tenure lasted barely 10 months, maybe he felt incredibly guilty of working for someone other than Verne. A true class act all the way.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I wonder if that would have held true had Nick been 10 years younger when the WWF exploded in 1984. The guy was so charismatic and amazing on the mic. I could have seen him getting a big push similar to Rude, Hennig and Dibiase.

he had worked for the NWA before he left for the AWA and by the time the "boom" happened he was nearly 50 and was making good enough money in the AWA while working for half the dates damn near the NWA/WWF guys did. there is a shoot where he mentions that he was asked by vince about coming and flat out turned it down cause he felt he was too old.
