Born in New York, brought up in the south west of France and now based in Los Angeles, Nick Fouquet's far-flung trips to Patagonia, Australia and across Europe inspired his eponymous hatmaking business that specialises in unconventional shapes. In an exclusive new video we spoke to Fouquet, who guides us through the sewing, steaming, fire treatment and sanding processes required to produce his vintage-inspired headwear line. "Hats should be as unique as the people who wear them," says Fouquet, who sources vintage woven fabrics and rare dyes from India and Japan during what he calls an "intuitive" creative process that differs from one hat to another.

I got my husband a nice 8x beaver felt cowboy hat. Now it's 30+yrs old, it looks great. Take it to hatman, he steams it presses it ready to go ,looks new all over. Paid $300.00 for this hat. Wore it yearly for 30+ yrs. $10.00 a year. Makes sense to me!

It's a brass page marker, like a bookmark. Could also be bronze. I've seen bronze ones.

johnnyrocks9 unfortunately no my friend, but I did tried some of the liquid they use for lighters, and it did the job! Try it out!

My dream custom 2 hats would be a 1930s or 1940s style fedoras, the first hat would be grey beaver fur felt with a high shapable crown for my head size with a dark blue ribbon and wide snap, the second hat would be a same the first one but the color beaver fur felt would be dark brown and the ribbon color Cole black.

//QUESTION FOR HAT MAKERS// Does anyone know if you can do the sanding process like Nick does with any sort of felt, or just top-notch? Thank you in advance for the answer!

Hey Emilis, It's not about the quality of the felt, it's about how it is finished. Fouquet get its hat bodies with close to no sanding from his manufacturer (you can get your hat bodies with more of less sanding). So if you get felt that are pre-sanded, I don't recommend sanding to much, maybe with some light paper by hand. But if you block your own felts, you'll definitly need to sand it after blocking to get a smooth finish anyway. But as to how much sanding you must do, it depends on the finish that you want your hat to have. I personnaly hand sand my hat, it's much work, but I like the "defaults" human touch have.

stratoliner fedora hat is a crossover of a dress hat and cowboy hat is a dress hat is a 1940s style call the whippet the ready made hats are made with thinner materials the all felts hats are the cheapest, poorly made, fit badly? they will shrink, when wet, no leather hat band with no liner? the better made hats are rabbit felts the all time best hats come from the 1940s rare all beaver felts, leather hat band, satin liner sell for a high price if you can find one? Whippet style all beaver is the best sellers of all time the mostly come in white or gray black and browns are hard to come by crossover hats are the best because you ware distressed out fits and look, ok? wheelchair larry
