I used to do pickups for the power company and go to farms and rural areas. Every farmer LOVED giving directions. We had GPS but I just gave up after awhile and let them give me directions I didn't need. Lol

When I was little my grandparents lived in “the country,” (a rural area about 15 miles or so miles from the city). Their phone was a party line, as in there was one phone number that was shared by 5 homes in the area. So say my mother calls her mother; it rings in all 5 homes and anyone can jump on to listen.

I am very old. There was also a time when you could tell what part of the city a person lived in just by their phone prefix. This was before portable phone numbers. One of the first pages in the the phone book would have the city divided by prefixes to inform you what prefix corresponded to what area. Very handy. If someone provided you with an unknown address, you would know what area of the city the address was located just by the phone number prefix.
@reev9759
@reev9759 26 күн бұрын
That's called an area code and they still exist now.
@georgejorden6269
@georgejorden6269 25 күн бұрын
Area Code does not always indicate where you live. I can live in Texas but my cell phone number can be an Arkansas cell phone number. In the olden days before cell phones and portable numbers, most phoned were static/fixed . The area code indicated what state the caller lived and the prefix would indicate what area of the city the caller lived. I once lived in a city that had a prefix for commercial / industrial business and a prefix for residential. The city has since abandoned that practice when the city started to grow.

@@georgejorden6269 you are correct in saying area codes predated call phones, so you proved my own point.

Thankfully GPS started to get popular right around when i was old enough to drive. But i remember printing off turn by turn directions from map quest to get places and being the map navigator for my dad on road trips. The first time i used GPS to go hundreds of miles and wind up right at someones house i never been to before without any hassle, I remember stopping to appreciate that for a few minutes and how much longer it would have taken the old way. Now GPS is integral in most of our lives and we don't even stop to think about it.

I was 'weened' in LA as well, and as old as these guys. I started touring as a musician at 16yrs old ( I know, it was a different time then!) and we had NO GPS. The guy in the passenger seat was the Navagator. NO sleeping in that seat! But we made it cross country many, many times using an Atlas and diddnt get lost as much as you would think. I do remember picking up the first version of what would turn into a GPS, of sorts. Gave you street by street directions in pritned form on the screen, as well as the nearest gas stations. Thats how you learned things like if there is one gas station, the price is higher than an exit with 3 stations that were competing. This still rings true. One other thing about that time, you actually had to interact with each other. To Talk. Where now on the road on busses, everyone is on their phones, ipods ( I know), iPads, etc. You can spend three weeks on the road and still not know who you were toruing with if you were a hired gun. Such a different World back then. I do miss it sometimes.

I drove a taxi in the DC area in the late '80s/early '90s, so we had to use map booklets made by the Alexandria Drafting Company. It had a grid system referred by the index of streets in the back. I remember if I ended up in a new County, I'd go to the nearest 7-11 and get a map book from there. Had quite a collection! I remember a certain dispatcher being fond of saying, "where is that address? ON YOUR MAP, SIR!!"

Another perk of being a 90s kid, I remember the holidays with my mom reading the maps, while book of the roads in Europe and when we missed an exit and my dad would about lose it 😂 driving around for hours to get to a place. It was always a task for the entire car to look at signs, which exit or street we needed. So somehow when I was 6 or 7 I learned to read the maps for my dad and always was on the lookout for signs. Then we got gps, but now I still notice Im way more used to looking at signs and often just drive on those.

Being a 90s kid, you hardly had to deal with maps before GPS came out though. I mean by the time you started driving, GPS was already a thing, no?

I leave very early for anywhere. I get a soda or coffee from somewhere, and I just take my time. It's chill. I listen to Team Coco podcasts that I have downloaded, and go. Sometimes, I have to screenshot for all the turns. I hate wasting data on looking at a live picture. It's because I'm almost a Boomer. We have principles. I hate having the noise, and it doesn't tell u until ur passing the off ramp or turn. If I could impart any wisdom, leave early. Don't be stressed. Have a full belly and empty bladder. And have a reward. It helps. I drive on the highways with the ac and music I like on. It helps me concentrate. Heat makes me sleepy.

90s when I began driving. We'd always ask what the closest landmark was that we knew, and then get written direction from there to the specific spot. Never had a road map book in my lap lol. Only time those were used were for roadtrips. Road atlas and a AAA triptik.

I grew up using the back of the phone book with the grid. I was excited when we got mapquest online and could print out the directions! I finally got a smart phone after gps was integrated into phones. Otherwise, I didn't want to spend that kind of money just for a phone. To this day though, I read the directions in the gps app and don't use the map. I want to know the names of the streets I'm looking for and have all that knowledge in front of me.

I screen shot the integrated phone map. My husband still prints of very specific directions and key streets. And he knows where all the bathrooms r ahead of time. .and now that I am of a certain age, I need to know where the bathrooms r too. I even put the bathroom code in the directions, no surprises. COVID shutdown was HORRIBLE for public bathrooms! Even doctors offices and hospitals would only have one open. I'm heartbroken for all the lives lost. But the worst part of shutdown for ME, was the lack of good food, cleaning products, TP, and public bathrooms.

Paper maps or you would get directions. CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) / AAA for the USA used to give you these things called triptik’s. That were little mini maps to guide you on long road trips! Or you got out your big Rand McNally book of maps.

When I was in high school in the mid-80's I delivered pizza -- yes, I was 16, the 'interview" went: "How old are you? Sixteen. Let me ask that again, how old are you? Eighteen. That's what I thought you said." -- in Burbank and Glendale, I lived out of that Thomas Guide in my '77 VW Bus.

I'm a good driver. I don't take my eyes off the road and I understand the rules of the road. 99% of you are dicking around on your phone, looking at the person sitting next to you, putting on makeup, don't understand how a four way stop works, don't understand right on red, can't execute a u-turn to save your life, and just in general don't take operating a 2 ton machine seriously at all.
