It's incredibly sad how DP was treating Simper all these years. He was one of the founding fathers. He was the one who recommended Gillan in the first place, and later when Gillan wanted Glover to tag along they just cast him out without even telling him directly. He had to phone in the record label to find out that he had been left behind. Imagine how it must've felt? Not to mention the Hall of Fame snub.

When Nick met Ritchie after being fired, Blackmore told him Roger wasn't as good as him. That's a shitty thing to do to two people. Jon put ambition before friendship and Paicey pretended not to notice that two people got stabbed in the back. The things some people will do for fame and money. Good luck Nick and Rod, you're better off without them.

Interesting to hear how the news wasn't broken. If Rod Evans ever resurfaces and speaks, I'd be curious to know if the way he and Simper were dumped were part of the thought process for the 1980 debacle, maybe a little payback. Listening to Simper talk about how he kept his cool makes me also wonder what kind of conversation he had when he was approached to be part of that "reunion," from which he wisely distanced himself.

Deep Purple III was a great album, the best of all MkI albums. Granted, Gillan and Glover took MkII to a whole new level, but Evans and Simper were sacked under false pretenses in less than classy fashion. The music was improving with each album. It was a bit 60s, but the whole band had that sound, and 3/5 adjusted with Gillan and Glover. Evans did okay fronting 70s rockers Captain Beyond, and Simper played bass for Warhorse. Each of those bands rocked right along with MkII. Ritchie never held down a regular lineup for more than a few albums with Purple or Rainbow. One has to wonder if the problem was Evans, Simper, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Hughes, Dio, Mickey Lee Soule, Dave Stone, Bob Daisely, Graham Bonnet, etc, or if Ritchie was actually the problem. Purple has had 2 lineups since 96 with Gillan in charge and no Ritchie. The only lineup change was Don Airey replacing the retired Jon Lord.

@TheAmirata10 ай бұрын
Pretty messed up the way Nick and Rod were let go without warning. Deep Purple went on to make some great albums, but the way the change was handled was deplorable. From what I understand, Ritchie has been the source of tension throughout his time in Deep Purple, especially having an age-old feud with Gillian. He was likely the culprit. What can one say? He’s a great guitarist and has been very successful, but such is the way of many sociopaths. Rod probably harbored ill feelings for what happened, and rightly so. He still ended up making two stellar albums with Captain Beyond and proved he was a great rock singer. Nick really got screwed over. Hope they are both doing well.

Nick looks like a very nice person. Im sure that he and Rod Evans felt so betraid by the rest of the group. The honest thing that they should have done was to announce to both of them face to face like TRUE MEN that they don't want them amymore in Deep Purple. This unfortunatelly speaks volumes for the character of Lord, Paice and Blackmore.

I think Ritchie was saying Nick didn't have any ideas. In some other interview Nick also stated they where struggling with song ideas at the end of mk1. Roger Glover had been writing songs for Episode Six and was the one who got Gillan writing. So though Nick Simper arguably may have been the better bassist, Glover came with other perks, as time would prove. Then again, Ritchie seem to have a problem with bassists both in dp and rainbow ;)

@@loaxelsson1394 The fact staring them in the face was: the original lineup, for all the early planning that went into putting the group together, were simply not cutting it; too many covers, burn out, only one real hit, most success was in the States and almost no recognition in the UK. They clearly had to do something. As interesting as the Orchestral sets were, going in that direction Lord wasn't really helping them get radio time either. They agreed to something pretty extreme and it worked.

I’d DP Mark 2 never became so successful no one would have been as bitter. Nicky seems like a super nice guy and his bass playin is a gas. He can come to my house for dinner anytime 😎 Blackmore was always a wanderer. He walked away from bands when they were their most successful. He didn’t believe in keeping the same members because every time he was into something new he wanted to bring in new guys who he thought could best deliver. I have no idea why he couldn’t do both Deep Purple and solo projects. Bad management.

The question is, why weren’t the rest of the band fed up of being ripped off? Did Coletta fire Nick for daring to ask for what was his, or were Blackmore and Lord behind it? I’m confused dot com.

Sounds like you have followed the band . As I recall , Ritchie had heard Jimmy Hendrix and wanted to do a much harder , rocking sound .The whole business was changing from hit singles which would have an accompaning album to a more fulfilling LP . Some tough luck for nick , but when you are no longer wanted in a band you get the boot .
